some dlc is greatly worth it, and some dlc is bullshit and not worth it at all, massive money cow

anytime more levels/new quests are added that actually build on the story or add new features not there before, its worth it imo

however, you add one new item/rehashing or are just unlocking stuff that was already on the disc...shame on youuu

but hey, its a CHOICE, if they force it on you or inhibit gameplay....rest that companie soul for they will be nerd raged to death

DLC is fine when done right, like with Fallout 3: That was a full game with 40+ hours of gameplay, and even the worst of its DLC still added a good few hours of new stuff. What I absolutely hate is when they take stuff out just to have it as DLC, like any and all day 1 DLC (I'm looking at you, Dragon Age).
just to let you in on it, bioware(i guess its EA technically?) does the Day 1 dlc to try and get gamers to have some incentive on buying games new rather than used, (they did this with mass effect 2 also) you get it for free with the game instead of buying the game used and possibly having to pay for it if you really wanted it.

Obsidian is doing it on this upcoming fallout new vegas with the pre order, its just the way the world is starting to go to try and get you to get the game new and as early as possible.

Expansion packs, in the past, have had more value than current DLC.

Adding one character and one mission is absolutely laughable.

You want a real expansion pack? Check out the Total War series.

Entirely new friggin games. From Rome there was Barbarian Invasions (new time period, new factions, new units, new strategies, all new) and Alexander, which felt so different it felt like you just bought a new game.

I want that. Not bullshit.
True enough, but you're comparing a 30$+ expansion pack with a 7$ DLC...

It assumes that there's some inherent amount of game which should be in a standard release, and that if such content exists, it should have been on the disc in the first place.

First, there's no minimum amount of "value" you deserve from a game. If you think that the cost of the "full" game of Dragon Age Origins (the main game plus DLC) is too high, don't buy it.

But, you're also assuming that this is a matter of "we have a bunch more content, but let's keep the content off so we can sell it as DLC" rather than the more likely "we're shipping on this date, which means production on the stuff that goes on the disc itself stops three or four weeks prior to that, but the DLC crews can keep working". Day-one DLC is a matter of the extra production time they had, not a matter of cutting things out to resell them as DLC.

Most of the DLC examples I've bought were map packs for games like Halo 3 and Gears of war and even then, I only buy them if I'm really interested. DLC isn't needed to play a game. It is your choice to buy, if you choose not to buy it, then it doesn't detract from the game you've already bought.

Even then, you're making your remark based on the content the DLC offers. A $8 map pack is worth less and carries less content then a the $25 Lost and the Damned DLC which comes with a good 3-4 hours of game-play. If you played any DLC from games like GTA IV, Fallout 3 or Oblivion, then you wouldn't call DLC a "Nickle and Dime" thing.

Besides, we've had Boycotts of everything from Left 4 Dead 2 to Modern Warfare 2. Despite these, these games became big hits. Protests don't work on an entire market when the majority are for it.

SOME DLC is bad. SOME DLC is good. You can't just lump it all into either good or bad, black or white, red or blue, Energizer or Duracell - things are a LOT MORE COMPLICATED than that.

What is it with people and the thirst for simplistic world views, in which something is ethier TOTALLY bad or TOTALLY good? You see this in politics all the time, with Democrats calling Bush Hitler and Republicans calling Obama Stalin. Neither Bush or Obama are Hitler or Stalin, not by a looooong shot. But that's what people like to do - simplify, demonize, glorify - people don't want to think about complex matters with multiple angles - they just want GOOD or BAD labels affixed to everything in life.

Some DLC is truly awful - like the Mass Effect DLC. Don't get me wrong, I really, really liked Mass Effect 1 and 2. But the paid DLC (stolen memory) was rubbish. So was Bringing down the Sky and Pinnacle Station. The Map packs for MW2 are over-priced, horrendously so. The extra maps for Killzone 2 also weren't worth the price.

BUT:

The DLC for Wipeout HD (Fury pack), doubled the amount of courses and more than doubled the amount of ships, and contained 3 new entire game modes, and was released a year after the original game came out. That was absolutely worth it. The Fallout 3 DLC was hit and miss - Broken Steel and Point Lookout were worth it, but Mothership Zeta and the Pitt weren't. The Uncharted 2 DLC was decent.

So some DLC can be good. It's rare, but at the end of the day, they aren't forcing you to buy it! If you think a particular DLC is a rip-off (Stimulus Package comes to mind), then DON'T BUY IT. Really quite simple, innit?

I compared the value, actually. Content vs price.

DLC is shit compared to what expansion packs used to be.
Okay, in some ways that's a fair call. But a lot of PC games still get expansions, consoles these days finally get more for the same game if you're willing to pay a few bucks. It may not be full on expansions, but they cost less and it's a start. Because it looks to me like you're looking at it with just a PC point of view.

I will go no further than either purchasing content or not. That is the extent of my (or anyone else's) power. A protest accompanied by massive sales (I'm looking at YOU MW2 boycotters and dlc complainers!) sends only one message: people will buy this product.

So Napoleon Total war is just an full-priced expansion pack to Empire? Sorry to say, but the total war guys are becoming increasingly DLC minded. Also see steam: http://store.steampowered.com/app/34030/ 1.99 for a pack of units? That's DLC!

The recent controversy with the much maligned MW2 map pack(s) show that it's all about perceived value. What versoth describes reeks of good value, in Australia the two MW2 map packs together cost 2400 ms points, we pay $30 for 1500 ms points. This after paying $120 for a standard game disc (not special edition). That is in no way good value and while I love MW2 I refuse to purchase these map packs and as such find myself being booted from lobbies when these new maps come into rotation. That sucks balls.

It feels like most DLC is just a way to nickel and diming by take stuff off the game and selling it later just to make more money.
Yep, that's pretty much what it is. Surprised anyone is surprised by cheap ways to make money anymore. Ever heard of expansions? Yep.

I get what everyone is saying that he doesn't have to get them, but you're also ignoring his point.

His point being it's wrong and they're pretty much just getting more money off of people with a cheap scheme and that this is WRONG. Just an example, Nazism. Following his point it's like you're saying just because Nazism exists doesn't mean he has to be a Nazi.

here is a thought.

Downloadable Content is completly optional, you do not have to buy it in order to play games.

so, the thought and question is:

If you dont like it, dont buy it?

-just a thought.
Here is a thought to counter your thought; It is just added content to a game we have already bought and paid money for which would have no doubt been in the game if they had more time.

Looking back at that, that doesnt really counter your question, but I already typed it out

Edit: Right, thats what I mean. What if I want the DLC, but am really peeved that I have to pay an overpriced amount for something that I pretty much already paid for?

DLC like the MW2 map packs is pointless (2 maps from COD4? I ain't paying for that!) and over-priced (£11 for 5 maps?)

I mostly hate it when DLC doesn't come out for all platforms (i.e. Saints Row 2 for PC, I want to use the modded version in the DLC really, as that's my best save)

Stuff like the Fallout 3 DLC is good, because they add a good portion of playtime to an already more-than-adequate lasting game. I just wish I didn't have to get it through Steam pre-GOTY, as I have to now buy the DLC on disc online since I'm not 18. I can get most of them, but not Mothership Zeta, which looks like the most interesting one aswell.

Urgh...

Think. Why do companies make DLC? Why do companies make anything? For money. Well spotted.

DLC, I find, tends to be good. I usually welcome an extension to a game. If you don't like it, you don't have to buy it.
