Poll: PS3 or Blu-Ray Player?

I would buy a PS3 if I have a demand for a Blu-Ray player. Why? Because I don't have a PS3 yet, and it's a viable gaming platform, and if I'm going to throw $200 at a device that plays Blu-Ray I might as well throw another $150 in and play PS3 games as well.

Well a couple months back, the PS3 made more sense, but now you can get a blu-ray player for ALOT cheaper than a PS3, so just a blu-ray player makes sense now

It doesn't make sense to buy a standalone player that's cheaper either unless you are seriously inclinded to scrub for money 'cause of the economy and all (HIYO!).

The cheapest standalone blu-ray player I've seen was about $300, and from many reviews I've seen it wasn't a very good standalone but it did reflect its price.

If you spend an extra 100 or so bones, you get a Blu-ray player and a gaming machine and a media storage device and an upgradable/updatable blu-ray device.

Not to bad by my tastes anyway, more bang for your buck.

So, yeah, it makes more sense to buy a Ps3 even if you're not going to play many games on it. It's a pretty good Blu-ray player really, especially considering the price you pay.

*IF* I was getting a Blu-ray player, it would be the PS3 in an instant. I've heard time and time again that it is still the best Blu-ray on the market. The games would just be an added bonus.

Well Signa that really is only in this context. Technically most gamers view the PS3 being a Blu-Ray player as an added bonus to being a gaming console.

You can't play Disgaea 3 on a BR player, so if you had an actual reason to choose between them, I'd go with PS3. However; you don't care for the exclusives, you don't personally own a HDTV, and BR disks are overpriced, with little real difference from standard definition. The day you actually need to upgrade to BR is far, far off. Really, you're wasting money.

A lot of people keep telling me it's a waste of money because I don't have an HDTV.

I DO have an HDTV. Just I, personally, am not near it very often, what with the college and all. My folks would dig having a Blu-Ray player, and I'd like to have one for the times that I AM home with my big HDTV. The gaming potential is just a bonus in this case.

But what I'm sensing from the majority of people is that I may as well buy a PS3 if I'm gonna get a Blu-Ray player, because it's got more value for the dollar.

ok here's my 2 cents

get the ps3 for a few reasons

1. you can play ps3 games
2. kick ass media hub functionality
3. firmware upgradable blu-ray (this is really important as new features are added to the standard, some stand alone players can't)
4. upscaled dvds

here's the catch with blu-ray, same goes for hd-dvd, they are only good with movies that are filmed in hd, older movies are just transferred from film and then upscaled to 1080. this can be a good thing and can be a bad one. a couple movies i've seen look grainy in hd, some don't tho. i think it has something to do with what type of camera was used to film the movie.

I mean, clearly it makes the regular DVDs better in some way. But any elabourations?

Got it because it serves as a great media hub, plays ALL Playstation games, and Blue Rays (probably the last physical storage media)

It fakes it. It stretches the 720x480p image of DVD to 1920x1080p (or 720p) and then does its best to interpolate [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Interpolation] the image. (Interpolation is looking at the image that is there, and making your best guess as to what the pixels in between would be using a set of algorythms)

It looks pretty good most of the time, but there is a distinct difference between true HD and upsampled HD (Despite what may have previously been said.)

I have a media PC, paid $100 for a Blu-ray HD-DVD combo drive (I still have a bunch of HD-DVDs lying around), and that works best for me, but I'm not a console gamer, so I'd say PS3.

PS: There is no 'e' in Blu-ray.

well, if you wanted the exclusive games, PS3, but if you're not going to play the thing, get a blu - ray player. go to www.amazon.com or www.amazon.co.uk if u are from the UK, they have cheap ones

The way I see it; if you're going to buy a Blu-ray player anyway then buy the PS3. It's like getting it at a discount.

From the information your telling us it sounds like you shouldn't bother getting either and should save your money. You have a 360, and are currently at college - whilst your at college you won't have a HD-TV so theres no point in getting a blu-ray player.


Your 360 is more than sufficient for games, to me it just appears you want one for the sake of it.

As previously stated DVDS are not going obsolete.

Then why would anyone buy a Blu-Ray player that isn't a PS3? It just seems like the most logical woney-wise thing to do, not to mention all the other feature the PS3 has.
