A few things.
There are stand-a-lone Blu-Ray disk players out there, that are cheaper then a ps3, But heres the ultimate question,
Are they Blu-Ray Profile 2.0 or above?
Can they be upgraded with firmware upgrades?
How many layers can they read up to? (Aka, The PS3 can for fact, read 2 25GB blu-ray Layers, possibly more, Some of the earlier stand-a-lone blu-ray players, can only read 1.)
Does the cheaper standalone blu-ray players, Upscale old dvds? Are you able to change the resolution on your BD player from 480,720, or 1080p? Or even disable upscaling on older DVDs that don't upscale very well?
If yours is able to be upgraded, read more than 2 layers of a BD disk, enable/disable upscaling, and can work on SD or HDTVs, then I'd have to say, Sure go get a Stand-a-lone player.
I'm guessing you use your 360 at college on your non-hdtv, correct?
So, why not just get the ps3, spend about the same (maybe $100 more), bring it home with you to watch BD movies, and bring it with you to college, so your able to Play PS3, and 360 exclusives when they come out.
And hey, At least you'll be able to play MGS4/FFXIII earlier then the 360 guys, or play some other games that might interest ya, or if your 360 ever gets some 'downtime' you won't be 'completely' out of the game.
HOWEVER, if you have a PC (A desktop, not a notebook) why not just get this? [http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=4102818&CatId=3634]
I know I'd be tempted to if I don't have one, and its already a fact that PCs resolutions suprass that of HD-TVs.
Oh, and if you shell out a little bit more money, you can get one that Writes on BD disks, Do you know how easy it would be to completely 'image' your PC's hard-drive and the next time you 'format' you could be done with out any downloading/installing of windows, or even half of your programs?
