From what I've seen it's people "Don't want a gaming machine" in any way, shape or form. It sounds stupid but this is the response I get often.

It's nice that you can buy a remote control for your PS3 when you're using the Blu-Ray function. Using the controllers all the time would be a bit unwieldy.

It is going to be a long time before DVD's become obsolete. I can tell you I don't want to have to pay 300$ for a Blu-ray player, and either way Blu-ray players can play DVD's can't they?
I should hope so. Pretty bloody stupid, otherwise.

just wait, third party players will become cheaper and cheaper
My thoughts exactly. Maybe some holiday discounts around the bend...?

To be honest mate (the topic writer), BR is a real luxury. Sure, I love having the option, but the only thing I really NEED BR for is region-free stuff (anime, for example) from abroad. But if I'd the option of getting my money back for my PS3 and going without, I would.

If you're not interested in the games but you really want BR then go for the cheapest option.

A PS3 is far superior. Blu-ray doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me. There isn't enough difference in picture quality for me to justify buying Blu-ray discs over DVDs. The PS3 is awesome though, and it is, in my humble opinion, better than the Xbox 360.

I would wait.

DVD's aren't going to go away for a long while, and upscaled DVDs are more than servicable for most people.

I would just get this http://www.ebuyer.com/product/139985
But I don't want to mess up this discussion.

It sounds like you'd only play it a small part of the year, being at school. Even though you guys only actually have to attend maybe 6 months of the year :p

I'd say just get a player if you're satisfied with your xbox. that, and the fact that no one, where the PS3 will be stored, will be using it for that. Also, you don't have an HDTV with you. you can get a blu-ray for about $140 US now, so that's a huge savings over the PS3.

Also, PS3 will price drop eventually, and you can take advantage of that.

A few things.

There are stand-a-lone Blu-Ray disk players out there, that are cheaper then a ps3, But heres the ultimate question,
Are they Blu-Ray Profile 2.0 or above?
Can they be upgraded with firmware upgrades?
How many layers can they read up to? (Aka, The PS3 can for fact, read 2 25GB blu-ray Layers, possibly more, Some of the earlier stand-a-lone blu-ray players, can only read 1.)
Does the cheaper standalone blu-ray players, Upscale old dvds? Are you able to change the resolution on your BD player from 480,720, or 1080p? Or even disable upscaling on older DVDs that don't upscale very well?

If yours is able to be upgraded, read more than 2 layers of a BD disk, enable/disable upscaling, and can work on SD or HDTVs, then I'd have to say, Sure go get a Stand-a-lone player.

I'm guessing you use your 360 at college on your non-hdtv, correct?
So, why not just get the ps3, spend about the same (maybe $100 more), bring it home with you to watch BD movies, and bring it with you to college, so your able to Play PS3, and 360 exclusives when they come out.
And hey, At least you'll be able to play MGS4/FFXIII earlier then the 360 guys, or play some other games that might interest ya, or if your 360 ever gets some 'downtime' you won't be 'completely' out of the game.

HOWEVER, if you have a PC (A desktop, not a notebook) why not just get this? [http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=4102818&CatId=3634]
I know I'd be tempted to if I don't have one, and its already a fact that PCs resolutions suprass that of HD-TVs. ;)

Oh, and if you shell out a little bit more money, you can get one that Writes on BD disks, Do you know how easy it would be to completely 'image' your PC's hard-drive and the next time you 'format' you could be done with out any downloading/installing of windows, or even half of your programs? :p
