yes they are equal... the inablility to speak english does not mean thier life is not equal... 95% of animals on the planet are sopisticated to communicate with each other in one way or another and can feel pain and possess some sort of self preservation instinct.

I don't think an animal is quite worth one of our lives, but I would definitely say that animal lives are more important than people these days seem to think.

It depends on how consistent you are in your understanding of the universe.

I voted no, they are not, but I'd still probably rather save my dog from danger than a stranger on the street.

While all humans and most animals are sentient, few animals are sapient.

Unfortunately not all humans show sapience. Ah, well.

Before I can even begin to grumble on the question, what defines life and what is its purpose if you just are going to die?

Perhaps productivity and a means to survive. But, to think of how animals have evolved all the time, we could just be one huge evolution experiment and someone is observing our progress

In terms like those, I'd say a human life is worth 10 dog lives.

I think people are equal to some animals but not others people are equal to cats dogs lions bears wolfs and most things in that vein but I think people are more important then the things like snails and bees and microscopic organisms

Depends on the animal being compared. Anything smaller than a human is worth less, and anything bigger than a human is worth more. I guess it also depends on individual preference. Either way, they're both delicious.

I like this way of looking at it, really simplifies things.

No they're not equal. People think, people feel, people act on emotion rather than instinct. Animals do not. Animals may have a semblance of emotion and intelligent thought, but they don't have the same amount of intelligence that people do. The thing that shows intelligence is emotion and passion, and animals have neither to the extent that humans do.

Well it depends on the animal really. Flies and ants (which I only kill if they very, very consistently piss me off) are a quite a bit more expendable than dogs.

You can drop a fly with a well-placed backhand.
But take a baseball bat and apply it with equal force to a human and an elephant, and you'll probably end up with two dead humans.
