Ugh, I hate Rage Against The Machine. That shitty band has spawned a generation of pseudo-political fucks who think just because they listen to RATM and hate the "system" that they're changing the world. And besides, for all the times RATM "rebels" against "faceless corporations", they themselves are signed to one. Because it makes them fucking money.

Exactly. Its must be hard being a rebelious communist from the west wing of a big fuck off mansion. If they were so dedicated to the cause they would give their albums away and be living hand to mouth.
Fucking this

I have to admit that I am tempted. However I do rather dislike Rage...hmmm. I'd rather go with something like a real christmas record, since that's what we're aiming for.

Fuck no. I'm not going to by some single from a mainstream band that is complete shit just to "stick it to" some other mainstream institution that I perceive as being complete shit. On a related note, everyone who is is a complete pillock.
i hate people that hate bands for simply being mainstream oh you have to so different dont you. there is a reason for them being mainstream
They are mainstream because they are shit. As is the mainstream.

Also, your user name is a disgrace to me. Get off my lawn.
Mainstream does not equal shit. Mainstream equals widely known and played. While Rage Against the Machine might be widely known, I rarely ever hear them on the radio or see them on TV. No, there I hear and see crappy pop music or crappy "take-me-seriously-plz" 'rock' bands.
Rage were widely known because their message got around, people liked it, people bought their records, went to their gigs so they could here their awesome music. Of course, angsty angry teenagers get wind of this, listen to them, cry them the best ever then declare them shit five years later. These people fuel other people to label them the same. While you may genuinely not like them, and I can respect that, refrain from labelling them "mainstream shit" because their message was successful in getting around, it makes you seem quite ignorant.

I am allergic to "rebels" that work for multinational corps, so no thanks. If you want to make a political band, be a man, say no, pay the fucking price like every other non-fraud artist out there and keep it underground. Also, write less horrible lyrics. ************. UNHHHHHH.
First of all RATM lyrics are not horrible at all. Have you actually listened to them. Because "************. UGHHHHHHHH!!!," is a pretty poor simplification of what they generally sing about. Listen to "Know your enemy" and it's lyrics then come back and say they're horrible.

Also, RATM would be fucking lame if they were an underground band. Mainly because they are so outspoken about the system and all of that stuff, so to just say that to like 4 fans because they are an underground band would ruin what they are trying to achieve. As to the working for a multi-national corps, how do you think they would get they're message out without the big name publishing companys and music labels? As I said before, It wouldn't work if they were singing to like the only 4 people who had heard of them; Which would be the case if they were an underground band. And don't come and try and say they've sold out, because they haven't. They never let people film their live performances. They never appear on MTV or any of that stuff. They just made music. It's people like you who ruin the idea of RATM; Just because you;re commercially successful doesn't mean you're lame and have sold out.
Paragraph 1: Yes, I have listened to them, and as a matter of a fact I listened to them at a time when I was 14 and quite rebelious, not 28 and wondering why I haven't had a boner in 3 days like now. I hated them even back then. I am not oversimplifying anything, they are already oversimplified and angsty.

Paragraph 2: If I understand correctly, you are saying that you can only change the system from the inside, otherwise you have no impact. I rage so much when I read things like that. You know what that reminds me of? Denzel Washington in the movie Training Day, telling Ethan Hawke that "A good narcotics agent must know and like narcotics. In fact, a good narcotics agent must have narcotics in his blood", then hands him a crackpipe, and BAM, he's fucked. No, you do not change the system from the inside. You change the system by setting it on fire. And no, this is not just my "Greek Anarchist" side speaking. Only partially. This is all more than just a philosophical discussion though, it is a way of life and a conscious choice. You don't get there because someone told you so, you get there because that's who you are. All opinions are respected, from me at least. I could write a 2,000 word post about the way I see things, but I don't really think anyone cares.
Man I do respect what you are saying, if you don't like them then fair enough. But I jusy get pissed off when people say oh they're shit just cause they're mainstream and then have no clue what to say next but you at least have an opinion. So I respect that. Lets agree to disagree.

I am indifferent but that idea of "fuck the system" might have some merit. Obvious refrence to my avatar.

See, I hate both of those things, and your poll doesn't really provide me with a voting option to adequately express how much I don't care about either.

Indifferent will have to do I suppose.

Don't be pedantic. Besides, slightly hypocritical as this is the uk, were we have pounds. I don't care enough to pay one or two pounds to buy something already own.
Don't be pedantic and hypocritical.... besides, you can get the single for only 0.79 pounds, which just happens to be between 1 and 2 dollars

But nice try though.

Also I tried to count the number of people in this thread who are completely missing the point, but I ran out of fingers AND toes.

Not caring =/= missing the point.

You think that I'm not going to care if it's between 1 and 2 quid, but I am if it's 79p? Seriously?

oh no! that 21p! I need that!

As much as I like them, RATM are no less mainstream than the X Factor winner, so I rather fail to see the point. It's a better song, granted, but it doesn't exactly prove anything.

Them both being mainstream isn't the point.

It's purely about the music, and breaking the monotony that is the X factor christmas number one.
