Well I would prefer a combo of both but if I had to pick one Railgun. Explosives would always be used and Railgun is really better for big ship to big ship combat. Laser provides a more or less infinite ammo supply for defensive purposes eg missile take down and smaller ship take down.

Captcha: deeply safers kinda coincidental with the less explosives thing.

Hahaha, I'm a spehs marines man myself... I'm not looking forward to playing Tau though... My Land Raider and Rhinos are not going to get far across the board with rail guns shooting at me...
To be honest: Eldar man, we've got the prism cannon, which isn't actually that good.

Though go for Blood Angels... deep-striking land raider, Machine Spirit, shoot a Hammerhead up the arse HARR HARR HARR!

*shit* yet another thread I'm close to hijacking for the purposes of WH40K nerdism!

Are people even reading? Considering how many times the opposite has been pointed out, I get grumpier every time someone says "lasers = infinite ammo."

Also: Tyranids gonna snatch all yo' people up, because our guns shoot MOAR TYRANIDS.

Also also: inb4 lasers = infinite ammo

This, recruits, is a 20-kilo ferris slug, feel the weight. Every five seconds, the main gun of an Everest class dreadnought accelerates one to 1.3% of light-speed. It impacts with the force of a 38-kiloton bomb. That is three times the yield of the city-buster dropped on Hiroshima back on Earth. That means- Sir Issac Newton is the deadliest son-of-a-***** in space. Now! Serviceman Burnside! What is Newton's first law?

I dare to assume you ignorant jackasses know that space is empty. Once you fire this hunk of metal, it keeps going til it hits something. That can be a ship. Or the planet behind that ship. It might go off into deep space and hit somebody else in ten thousand years. If you pull the trigger on this, you are ruining someone?s day, somewhere and sometime!

Do any of you inbred dipshits know what does not act in such a manner? Lasers! Now I know you want to act like some kind of bad ass fagot power ranger in space, but we here in reality know that lasers are not offensive weapons. Are we clear, maggots!?

Neither! Gauss cannons for the win!

Effin' magnets bro, how do they work?!?
See, that's part of the problem... gauss guns (or rather, coilguns) are (per unit of energy input) far less efficient than railguns. Being based on a stack of electromagnets, it requires a longer 'barrel' for projectile acceleration and its terminal velocity is limited severely by how much heat the system can take. Railguns are designed specifically to deal with that problem. That and energy loss from transfer from system to system (i.e. electrical to magnetic to kinetic) makes it even worse.

Sorry to put a downer on it mate! Though if you're thinking of Necron technology in 40K fandom, then I'm all for it, even if I prefer the Particle Whip!
Lol, it's mostly Halo. I love the gauss cannon on the warthog, and the MAC cannons from the books.

And for some reason, I see them as looking very aesthetically pleasing when imagining them.

Kinetic is just better. The only limit to its power is the speed you can throw projectiles at.
I imagine one day we will be hurling projectiles the size of a Volkswagen beetle (like the old Iowa class battleships) at 3/4 the speed of light. How's that for a kinetic impact?
needs moar dakka.

Well just to let all you folks know, joke`s on you. The U.S navy already has developed missile defense laser systems and new railguns that they plan to arm their ships with in the not too distant future ^^ especially since we already have working prototypes of both and are developing a solid-state laser.

XD my first thought was Mech Warrior

but really
Rail Gun
why?
raw brute force, sure you could burn a hole in a tank and ether ignite the fuel or ammo, >.> OR, you can use a rail road tie and rip the turret off of it.

which sounds more awesome? burning a hole or ripping it apart

How is the joke on us? I, at least, already knew this. He wasn't asking about point defense systems (lasers), he was asking about main armaments (Electro-magnetic railguns), so while the people who said lasers are wrong by your standards, the majority of us would use railguns, and are vindicated. Because, as I said, most of us already new that. I am willing to bet that the existence of these things is what prompted them to become so popular in fiction, and thus, brought about this thread.

Yep, railguns. Lasers are pretty cool, but burning a hole through something is not nearly as badass as smacking it with a million tons of kinetic force.

Well judging by the name, the fun memories of playing Quake 2/4 and this song that's been stuck in my head from Team Fortress 2's "Prophunt"
I'll go with Railgun.

I am devoting a lot of time to it after work tonight, provided I can stay up, since I seem to be skipping sleep right now...
