This.

I could barely answer between fights...

JRPG random battles are like the Hoard from L4D always there and always WANT SOME OF THIS!

I grew up with the SNES Final Fantasy titles and GBC Pokemon games as my links to the world of JRPGs, and as a result of that, random battles just seem like a natural part of gameplay to me. They don't particularly bother or enthrall me... They're just the way the genre is meant to be played.

It's like reloading in an FPS or moving backwards to block in a fighting game. They're just gameplay mechanics to me, you know? They come naturally, and I don't give it a second thought.

I hate them, One of the many reasons why Chrono series ROFLPWNs the faggy emo-full FF series.

It's a bit tiresome when you walk two feet (fix'd) between each random battle.
Yeah. I'm cool with it in any other way. I hate it when it does that and I forget where I'm going because of it. (Mt. Gagazet from FFX, anyone?)

Tales of Symphonia got it right then! You can see the bad guys coming for you. You want a fight Bam you're locked into close combate. Need heath and supplies, run to the hills!

I don't mind them at all, but I haven't played a game with them in years. They've been pretty much dropped in recent years, in favor of being able to see the enemies on the map before you fight them.

Does this mean you might re-evaluate your opinion after playing Eternal Sonata, Baten Kaitos, or any of the Tales series?
Didnt Tales of Legendia have random battles? It was a while ago, so I dont remember all that well.

Also, as frequent as FFX battles were, it was fun to be able to take out your frustration and attack your own teammates. AKA Tidus.

I don't mind them as long is the encounter rate is not too high or too low. Too high you have much frustration, too low and it's really annoying to gain the levels necessary to progress.

Part of me wishes more games implemented something like the Migrant system from Wild Arms 3, it let you avoid battles by draining from a gauge. Battles with the weak monsters cost nothing to avoid while regular battles cost about 2-3 point out of a possible 30 or 40 points. Not saying it's a perfect system but it was interesting.

Backpedal right now Drow, the old Tales series is filled with random battles.
Do any of the ones pre-Symphonia matter?
Yes, very much so.
...oh, very well.

this sums up what I think about random battles.

this is why you don't let people watch you play JRPGs

And this is why you go through random battles.

Implying I didn't play Abyss.
You've used that green once before. I'm assuming it means something I don't know.

And no, Tales of the Abyss was just closest at hand, and seemed to make a fairly solid projectile. It was a subtle hint of "my original point still stands."

Dragon Age did it perfect JRPGS should copy it.
DA:O was close. However, much of the game I found myself wishing for random battles to improve my toons, especially when I ran into monsters that decimated me. Lack of them really bothered me in Mass Effect, where I found myself driving the stupid car across barren landscapes hoping to find something to shoot. However - I LOVED both games.

I don't mind random battles as long as the load times aren't too bad. I'm trying to play Lost Odyssey and the random battles are killing me. The game loads for 20-30 seconds before each battle and at least as much afterwards - completely pulls me out of the story.

Random battles give me so much nostalgia--they remind me of a simpler time. Like the many other posters here who can appreciate (or simply tolerate!) random battles, this is what I was raised on :)

Obviously, battling and rpgs have always gone hand-in-hand. Whether the battles are random, frequent, or inconvenient shouldn't really matter. Being entirely 100% prepared for every battle makes an rpg not only unrealistic but also extremely dull.

@soundoflights I'm really enjoying Dragon Age's battle system, too. It's not entirely random, but sometimes you get ambushed which is always fun!

Thanks to Final Fantasy 10, I dread them. I became so insane with it, I cheated and got all my characters their celestial weps so I could just 1 or 2 shot evrything.

i don't mind them, but they can get annoying when you have to equiped a certain item for a battle you don't know about, so you're killed instantly.

eh i dont mind it at all, i realize its a part of alot of battling and stuff, i kinda like the random battles, especially if you need some grinding to be done, yeah chrono had the other battles done way early in time, but holy shit you could NOT do some of that storyline without a guide, trying to find shit or the next story plots (such as a small detail, that was required) was like finding a non-annoying fagg, insanely hard and confusing, in which i would much rather have the random battles please and my ff games where finding shit wasn't as confusing at all.

the only game that really bugged me with that was pokemon..that AI could tell when you were trying to rush through the story or were about to die, it would send every single freaking thing it had at you, zubat galore i swear
