Random battles that happen all the fucking time is what contributes to the loss of fun in the game.

I've enjoyed games that threw random battles at me far too often (I'M LOOKING AT YOU, SKIES OF ARCADIA), but sometimes I get irritated if there are random battles and I wind up underleveled. I thought the point of these things was to allow for a gradual increase in power!

I hate them. I absolutely hate them. When I want to get where I'm going, I want to actually GET there without being stopped every 10 feet by a random encounter! I wouldn't mind if there was any skill in AVOIDING them, but NO, that would take away the "random" aspect of them. Instead I have to walk forward dreading every step because I KNOW that I'm going to hit another one soon, and at this point I just shut off the game.

If a game has random battles, I can't play it. That's why I liked Mario RPG so much. No random battles and blocking was entirely controlled by the player.

I presume you mean the one on the SNES? If so, I heartily approve.

Nowadays I only play oldie games with random-encounters on my emulator, I mean I would if i were to have. . .one. Anyways the ability to speed it up 600% or so really takes away alot of the frustration. It doesn't even have to be just random encounter, in chrono trigger to just sped up the battles, but usually if the monsters wouldn't have a chance regardless, if i were fighting a boss or something to the effect I played normal speed so as not press something wrong.

I in the preceding paragraph of course means some random gamer I don't know

I don't mind them just as long as they don't happen every 10 bloody seconds!

I don't mind 'em, really. Not unless the encounter rate is REALLY out of control (Black Sigil, Glory of Heracles, lookin' in your direction. FF games are generally okay.). I prefer the Chrono Trigger/Grandia/Lufia model, where you can see the enmies and choose to fight or not fight them.
