As someone who own(s)/(owned) both it comes down to this. If you like to be really technically brilliant and have to know everyone move in the book to win a game go for Marvel vs Capcom 3 (MvC3 for short). But if you want a more relaxed arcade-like fighting game that's accessible to those of us who are not gifted with encyclopaedic knowledge of the moves list go for MK.

I couldn't stand MvC3, I found it was impossible to gauge what the enemy would do and this whole tag-team stuff could have you destroyed without you even knowing what happened. If it's one thing I can say about MvC3, when you eventually do get into a game (the online waiting is rivalling that of Gears 2 match-making) the online connection is a lot better than MK. MK servers are crap, I was playing against a friend of mine who lives 3 miles away and it was like at least 3/4 of a second lag; that's really bad for a fighting game.

Simply put if you want something more difficult go for MvC3 or if you want something more accessible albeit more stupid, go for MK.

P.S. Some might say I've put a bit too much detail into this, but I think it's going to serve your question a lot better.

MvC3 was seriously blamed for being too easy fyi...

People aren't gifted with that knowledge, the holy spirit of Christ doesn't bestow it upon us. We just practice a whole lot lol.

As someone who's agnostic I never would or did mention anything with Jesus Christ. I'm sure he'd be interested o_O Anyway, perhaps those that complained about it being too difficult had it on easy difficulty. I simply tried to explain I couldn't keep up with the pace of it, it's way too over the top

I'd go with Mortal Kombat 9 myself.

MvC3 is fun, but you KNOW there's gonna be a 'Super Extreme Son of Sam 31' version released at some point.

No, you don't get it, I don't mean it was to easy to beat the game, it was too easy when played on a high level, wayyy beyond the level at which even the hardest AI foe was at.

You could combo by simply going from low to mid to high to launcher, then do the same in the air and then do a super with an extremely easy input for supers compared to all other fighting games. Add to that the ridiculous amount of damage you could do with x-factor and the game becomes wayyy too easy.

Neither, go get Blazblue: Continuum shift. Super fun and its very new player friendly what with its tutorial.
OP, expect a few of these responses. As to the two you listed? MvC3 is very, very fast paced and takes some getting used to. MK is.....meh. Not outstanding in anyway.
I'm only going for MvC3 or MK. I personally think MK with it's brutal combat looks like something I'd enjoy, but my sister is a long time fan of Marvel. As I said before, I'm not a huge fan of fighters and I'll probably play it mostly when others come over. The possibility of a Super MvC3 is intriguing but I'm not sure if I'll still be interested by the time it comes out.
You care about content or just fighting? MK has MvC3 beat in the content department (McC3 is barebones), but MvC3 is the better fighting game.
Content as in moves, maps and characters? Well that didn't make the decision any easier.
No, content as in other random stupid modes with goals not what you normally consider your goals when you play a fighting game. Things like time attack mode, taken to the extreme, things just for messing around.

Oh and look at my post above, the link there has a lot of info about blazblue.
Makes sense, considering what I've seen. I watched a bit of Blazeblue related videos and it's just not my cup of tea. I figure it's either MvC3, MK or continuing the wait for Red Faction: Armageddon.
I'd go with MvC3 or wait for Red Faction.

Well I wish that were the case for me. Bearing in mind MvC3 was the first time I had bought a fighting game since...Soul Calibur 2 on the Gamecube, I wasn't expecting much of myself. But f me, I even went into the training mode and I tried with all my might to do even the most simple of moves and it wouldn't work. The buttons were there and I was pressing them, but nothing corresponded on screen. Needless to say, it was traded in quickly.

It all depends what your looking for, Ive played a fair amount of both and in my opinion MK is more of a party game, something you play whilst predrinking or after you get in so you can sober up before going to bed- its get more content but its mechanics arent as deep or well balanced. Whereas MvC3 has an enormous learning curve, Ive been playing it for a week and still suck balls at it- alot of attention was paid to making every little thing work, whilst it has its flaws its morely built around achieving a sense of mastery.

I personally adore MvC3, even if Ive already lost a controller to it.

I've made my decision. I'll go for MK for now as it looks more appealing and if a Super MvC3 ever comes out I'll ask my sister if she still wants to bother with it. Thanks for the input, and I hope the output is worth it.

I was also thinking of getting into fighting games. Before you say Blazblue CS, it's art and style is not my cup of tea. So MK or Tekken?

MvC3 is way more fun than MK.
But there is nothing wrong than MK just that at the end of the day IMO MvC3 has better characters.

Aye Blazeblue just doesn't look like something I'd play either. I'm praying that MK is the right choice.

I already had a copy of MvC3 when MK came out, so I was perfectly content with sticking to MvC3 until I played the MK demo.....Suffice to say I have MK and no longer own MvC3.

Well...Tekken 6? You should be able to find a cheap copy of it pretty easily.

It's old,but it's still a good game, you should watch vids about this game on youtube, they're better than written words.

Also,if you didn't already know, you can customize costume for the fighters, most girls like this feature in a game.

Plus,it has a robot girl with a chainsaw arms, and a PANDA in it!

MvC3 - complex system, but a very scarce game overall. The bare-bone game
MK - more simple, but a more full-fledge package.

MK is good fun, I haven't played MVC since the first one on PS1.

War Machine was my favourite, simply because he had the best name. :p

Ah, here's a couple of things you should be aware of.

Soul calibur is a 3D fighter, MvC is a 2D fighter. These vary tremendously. In 3D fighters you can do actual moves by just pressing a button back to back and maybe holding a direction. In 2D fighters you need to input specific and comparatively more precise directions for your moves. The exchange is that unlike in 3D games, the characters don't have 70+ moves so as long as you master a small number of inputs you can use pretty much every character's moves. You basically exchange memorizing 70 moves for memorizing the order of the 15 or so moves for the combos of the game.

Now, as for doing the moves right, you simply need to do it fast. If a move has the buttons "down, down-forward, forward" you shouldn't just tap one after the other, you should slide your thumb from down to forward in fractions of a second and press the punch buttons just as your thumb reaches forward. It's supposed to be a tightly timed affair and not a lax one like in the moves of the 3D fighters.

Okay, so the only fighting games I've ever bothered with were DoA 3 + 4 (which were both bloody horrible) and now I'm in search for a new fighting game to play with friends and possibly my sister. I've never been particularly good at button mashing so one that's easy to learn would be good. Also as a side note: fuck the ratings system in this country, if I have the money for a game then I have the right to buy it and I won't accept the classic 'We're protecting the children" bullshit.

*exhales*

So which should I go for; MvC3 or MK?
Poll is flawed. What about Street Fighter 4? If your looking for an experience that's "bloody horrible," then I'd definitely recommend Mortal Kombat.

I would suggest Mortal Kombat. It was more fun than MVC3 and kept me playing for a longer time.
