After the Spaaaaaaaaace Ships thread and watching the pilot of Continuum I?m curious to see if there are any Science Fiction series I?ve missed (that are worth watching) and hopefully introduce some new science fiction series to you guys (I?d like to avoid superhero, fantasy and supernatural shows by the way). So, without further ado ? here?s my recommendations (in no particular order):

WORTH WATCHING:

1) Firefly; it's simply awesome. Watch it now! Go!

2) Farscape; a Sci-Fi series filmed in Australia (including my home city! Yay!). It's obviously been made on a budget and you can tell, but it's brilliantly written. It's bizarre, utterly mad and doesn't take itself too seriously. One of my favorites, I beg you to watch it. Oh! And the Jim Henson Company does awesome animatronic puppets for the aliens. Watch it!

3) Stargate SG-1; the start of a couple of other shows of note. It takes a while to really get into the swing of things, as stupid looking sets and costumes undercut it's more serious nature. It also suffers from a weak main plot arch in the final seasons. Mostly notable for its better spin-off. That said, it can be a lot of fun. There's also a shit ton of stuff to watch here as well, coming in at more than 200 episodes.

4) Stargate Atlantis; the best of the Stargate franchise in my opinion. It has the same sense of adventure SG-1 has, but with overall stronger production and writing. If you can't get into the SG-1 I'd still give it a shot.

5) Stargate Universe; the final Stargate spin-off series, and the shortest. Unfortunately, it really jumped on the dark and gritty feel of the very successful Battlestar Galactica and it couldn't pull it off. It's worth a look if you've got a lot of spare time.

6) Battlestar Galactica; a dark and gritty Sci-Fi series which, unlike most of the others here, isn't about adventure but rather survival. Its writing is almost consistently excellent and it's got some great space battles. Apart from Firefly and Farscape, it's one of the only TV series where I've bought the entire thing. Oh! And it ended, rather than being cancelled. You don't usually see that.

7) Caprica; the drama spin-off to Battlestar Galactica. I'm actually not sure why I like this one so much, but I can tell you I did. It's a rather interesting drama that is technically a prequel to Battlestar Galactica, but I'd still watch it second.

8) Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles; it's not one of my favorites, but it's still pretty good. Unfortunately it ends just as it brings in a major plot arch which is a little bit of a kick in the balls, but it's still worth watching overall.

9) Fringe; an investigation series based around all sorts of crazy science that can be a little contrived a times but can be forgiven purely because of some of the better episodes with Walter Bishop (a genuinely mad, drugged up scientist) .

10) Sanctuary; it's a supernatural series that doesn't always hit the mark, but it's usually interesting. Notable for using almost all CGI sets. It's got a steam-punk vibe and worth watching if you've got the time and like monsters and general supernatural stuff.

11) Dark Angel; It's got an intriguing premise (a post severe EMP world), but the writing fails it after its second season ? and it?s not amazing to begin with. If you do like the series, don't watch the second season for the sake of your sanity. On the plus side; the setting is great and the action is usually pretty enjoyable. A lot of stuff gets blown up, too.

12) Jericho; a post-apocalyptic TV series that, while took a little while to find its feet, it's actually really good. There?s not much to say about it, except that it focuses on what would really happen to a small town if nuclear war occurred.

13) Doctor Who; I'm always hesitant to recommend it, because I'm not sure where to tell you to start watching. The start of the reboot, or whatever they called it, is awful. Yet I'm not sure where else they set up the premise. Opinions on it are always very polarized as well - either you love it or you hate it.

14) Andromeda; while it starts as a promising-but-flawed series it drops it?s lead writer after the second season ? and you can tell. It drops its continuity, changes a lot of the characters and general tone of the series (sigh, fucking space magic). If you?re really into space opera and want to watch it past its second season, jump to near the end of season three. It gets slightly better, though it?s still pretty jarring. If you don?t, the first two seasons are worth watching just because Lexa (who plays the ships AI) is pretty awesome.

15) Falling Skies; yet another hit-and-miss post apocalyptic series. This time it's aliens, and it's not horrible. A lot of the twists are stupidly predictible and it falls into the same pit as most post apocalyptic shows where there will be whole episodes where just nothing happens. It'll probably end up on the "not worth watching" list if it's second season doesn't get any better.

16) Red Dwarf; the British one. We don't talk about the American one, okay? Otherwise, this series was hilarious despite - and sometimes, because of - it's low budget. This is one of those shows that you must watch. Do it!

NOT WORTH WATCHING:

1) Dollhouse; the Joss Whedon show we don?t talk about. It has some of the worst acting that I?ve seen (fucking Eliza Dushku or however you spell it) from a sci-fi show with a proper budget and it has pretty poor writing overall. It?s a pretty good case for why Joss should stick to team-based character writing.

2) Star Trek: The Original Series; the captain is a sexist **** (who can?t act) and the writing is as poor as its production values. I?m not sure why anyone raves about it.

3) Star Trek: The Next Generation; I tried really hard to like it as I like Picard, but it?s writing is horrible. Its production values are horrible. The acting is horrible apart from Picard. After this and the Original Series I refuse to watch anymore Star Trek.

3) Babylon Five; another show I really wanted to like ? this time because of its impressive CGI (for the time, that is) and pretty decent sets and costumes. However, the acting is really bad (the commander of the base is easily as bad as Eliza Dushku) and the writing is pretty poor. I can?t stand ?galaxy police? philosophy the commander wants to force on everyone else.

4) Warehouse 13; this show gives me a head-ache. That?s an impressive feat for a sci-fi show (as the mere fact of being a sci-fi show is usually enough for me to watch it). Its poor writing and mediocre acting could probably be forgiven if its female lead wasn?t so fucking annoying. At one point it even looks like they?re about to kill her off between seasons ? and she fucking come back.

5) Eureka; it suffers from a lot of the same problems as its sister show, Warehouse 13. While occasionally it was enjoyable it is not worth wasting your time on.

6) Outcasts; a slow sci-fi series about a colony on another planet. It?s pretty boring if you?re not really into science fiction as it got cancelled just as it brings in all the mystery and intrigue. I actually enjoyed it, but it?s not worth watching.

7) Defying Gravity; I almost like this show. It takes a realistic approach to near future space travel ? but ruins it with irritating characters, even more annoying flash backs and a god-like space magic alien as the real reason behind the mission. If it was even just exploring the solar system I would have liked it.

SHOWS I COULDN?T GET INTO (OR I DIDN?T WATCH ENOUGH TO MAKE RECOMMENDATIONS):

1) Torchwood; it actually looks like an alright show. I even enjoyed the few episodes I?ve seen. I just can?t get into it, and I don?t know why.

2) Space Above and Beyond; I?ve never been able to sit through more than a couple of minutes of this for some reason.

3) V (2009); I?ve been trying to watch it ? and probably will eventually ? but the first couple of episodes didn?t impress me.

NEW AND UPCOMING SHOWS THAT LOOK COOL:

1) Continuum; I?m not usually a fan of time-travel as a premise, but the pilot was actually pretty enjoyable. So far it?s only airing in Canada, so you may have to use *ahem* other means to watch it if you ? like me ? don?t live there.

2) Revolution; this feels like an action-packed Jericho to me, so color me cautiously optimistic. J.J Abrams always worries me, though. I?m not a fan of lost ? despite liking a lot of his other work.

EDIT: Poll fail. Again.

EDIT 2: Failed youtube embedding for Continuum.

EDIT 3: Link to Space Ships thread doesn't worked, so removed.

EDIT 4: Forgot Falling Skies.

EDIT 5: How the fuck could I forget Red Dwarf!?

Two to recommend.

Star Trek: Deep Space Nine: Take the elements of Star Trek and stress them to their limits, and begin taking a hammer to Gene's vision to see just how well it would stand up under wartime pressure.

Star Wars: The Clone Wars: Probably one of the better shows on Cartoon Network, it has a top rate effects budget for an animated series, and while the writing is extremely inconsistent, it provides enough visual pizazz to hold your attention. It also gets props for already doing better than all three Prequel films in portraying the friendship of Anakin and Obi Wan.

Did I mention that it is gorgeous?

I like Warehouse 13(first season) the jokes are funny the story lines are interesting, MacPherson is a dastardly bastard and Claudia is awesome. I'm countering your non-recommendation of Warehouse 13. I recommend Warehouse 13.

EDIT: I also recommend the show Misfits.

So i was really liking your post untill i saw that you didnt like bablyon 5. That is my number 2 show after Firefly. Yes its not fast to get into, but it was awesome BECAUSE it was all about chracters. Once you get to know them the way they act to eachother takes first place and the whole "galaxy war" is just a background "plot engine". But i guess each for its own
You also mentioned Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles, which make hate, but i liked, so bonsu points for that.
Currently watching Buffy (not technically sci-fi show i know) and was thinking about warehouse 13 next, but i guess i could go with andromeda instead.
a good thread you got there, will be intresting to see what others tell.

P.S. that battlestar galacttica spinoff, chrome and blood or something along those lines, did it actually got made? there seems to be 0 news about it while i saw multiple people talking about it on forums (imdb).

You'll have to speak up...

That aside,

As far as Doctor Who is concerned, personally I would recomend the start of the revival, with the 9th Doctor, as a good starting point, since it was specifically written to introduce an entirely new generation of viewers to the show.

Other than that, the only series I can think of that hasn't been mentioned and is sort of sci-fi, is Ultraviolet - a single series (and it's British so that's 6 episodes) modern take on vampires in which the V word is never used. More scientific than supernatural.

And it's on Channel 4's Youtube channel, which is a bonus.

Battlestar Galactica has always irked me the wrong way partly due to the references to Mormonism throughout the thing. Not that it's bad to be a Mormon or that you can't put religious references in your show but I just don't care for it.

I agree, but in the end it didn't make up for all it's short commings.

As I said, I really tried to like it. I much prefer character centric fiction - including science fiction - but there was a lot lacking in terms of writing for the characters. It's a shame, really.

Blood and Chrome seems to be in a development hell like state. The last I heard it was to be a web-series, but I don't think the nwe "Sy-Fy" channel wants to take a chance on science-fiction anymore. I'll be suprised if it actually gets made.

Yeah, but have you gone back and watch those episodes? They're pretty bad. Once again, I usually try and introduce it through them anyway - it's just apart from the introduction there's not much reason to watch them.

Colour me intrigued! Mainly because it's British. =D

Babylon 5 was frigging awesome and where in the name of Bonaparte's balls is DS9!?

B5 had intruige, great characters and a massive plot. It was also carefully written to not be cancelled by taking into account plot constraints and actors whimsy, something Joss Whedon could have done with thinking about when making the amazing but ludicrously over spent Firefly.

Space Above and Beyond was... well, it was kind of flawed. I liked it though.

Alphas

very similar story/themes to X-Men so far but done in a more serious tone and realistic setting.

The 4400

a bit dated and cheesy at times but some great episodes, makes me think a bit of Fringe.

---

oh and I did like the Continuum premiere...if only for the fact that out of the half dozen shows listed in the thread so far that were filmed in Vancouver...this one actually happens: IN VANCOUVER!! =)

As I said, after the atrocities of Star Trek: TOS and Star Trek: TNG I decided it wasn't worth putting myself through another Star Trek show (I really don't like Gene Roddenberry's vision either). As for Babylon Five, eh. I've seen almost the entire first season and it really didn't impress me.

These guys? Almost enough reason not to watch Babylon alone

Yeah, I never really liked the religious references (didn't know they were references to Mormonism though) but I could usually look past them.

I also really liked Misfits - thought I haven't watched the latest season yet - but I excluded it from the list because I didn't want to bring pure Supernatural/Superhereo/Fantasy stuff into it.

OT: Still, glad to know someone else liked SGU, I freaking loved that show. Granted a few episodes from season sucked but to me, season two was freaking perfect.

Yeah. I was pretty pissed when the announced it was getting cancelled. Even more so when it ended on a cliff hanger as well. Good show over all, but it took too long to get there.

It gets much much better from season 2, but i guess to each his own.

Well judging from Firefly behind the scenes what they ahd to work with looked like way bellow average TV show budget. Joss is amazing when it comes to creating his characters and finally got the fame he deserved with Avengers.

The best series so far of Torchwood is the "Children of Earth" miniseries. That is absolute true sci-fi drama and rip-roaring stuff. The latest series (with American involvement of 800%) is awful and the pace compared to CoE is at a crawl -- CoE is over in a few hours and there is not a dull moment.

Ewwwwww...... sci-fi. I don't see why everyone likes them.

They're terribly written and cheesy and the production quality is crap so all the aliens and such look like they wear cheap masks.

Seriously, why isn't there a steampunk TV series?

actually... most of then do wear cheap masks. when you look at how its made you really feel pity for the actors.
