1) Dollhouse; the Joss Whedon show we don?t talk about. It has some of the worst acting that I?ve seen (fucking Eliza Dushku or however you spell it) from a sci-fi show with a proper budget and it has pretty poor writing overall. It?s a pretty good case for why Joss should stick to team-based character writing.
Gotta diagree with you on this one. Dollhouse got off to a bad start, no one's denying that, and Dushku's really doesn't have the range that the role demands, but about halfway through the first season it saw a massive upswing in quality, and it's second season was nothing short of awesome. Even Dushku started to improve quite a bit.
I'd both agree and disagree a bit. Girl's got range, unlike what most folk say--the episode where Echo plays a blind girl joining a cult is pretty darn endearing. Her issue is, like always, that of direction.

On to where we agree: the show went off to a bad start like you said b/c, quite simply, nobody had ever attempted a format like that on, well, possibly anything ever. It was, in many ways, a visionary work just going off on its aspirations alone which that were nothing short of shitting all over thousands of years worth of well proven formats in linear story telling. I mean, just look: they kept resetting the characters' development pretty much every episode during the first season, and when they figured out how to evolve the story telling the show was in such a way that they could not afford to explore the shiny new toy they came up with to deal with their aspirations of telling a linear story with non-linear character development, all in favor of somehow being able to wrap the story up in a coherent manner.

And, thus, the show tanked. Hard. I still found it mostly enjoyable, though.

WORTH WATCHING:

1) Firefly; it's simply awesome. Watch it now! Go!

2) Farscape; a Sci-Fi series filmed in Australia (including my home city! Yay!). It's obviously been made on a budget and you can tell, but it's brilliantly written. It's bizarre, utterly mad and doesn't take itself too seriously. One of my favorites, I beg you to watch it. Oh! And the Jim Henson Company does awesome animatronic puppets for the aliens. Watch it!

3) Stargate SG-1; the start of a couple of other shows of note. It takes a while to really get into the swing of things, as stupid looking sets and costumes undercut it's more serious nature. It also suffers from a weak main plot arch in the final seasons. Mostly notable for its better spin-off. That said, it can be a lot of fun. There's also a shit ton of stuff to watch here as well, coming in at more than 200 episodes.

4) Stargate Atlantis; the best of the Stargate franchise in my opinion. It has the same sense of adventure SG-1 has, but with overall stronger production and writing. If you can't get into the SG-1 I'd still give it a shot.

5) Stargate Universe; the final Stargate spin-off series, and the shortest. Unfortunately, it really jumped on the dark and gritty feel of the very successful Battlestar Galactica and it couldn't pull it off. It's worth a look if you've got a lot of spare time.

6) Battlestar Galactica; a dark and gritty Sci-Fi series which, unlike most of the others here, isn't about adventure but rather survival. Its writing is almost consistently excellent and it's got some great space battles. Apart from Firefly and Farscape, it's one of the only TV series where I've bought the entire thing. Oh! And it ended, rather than being cancelled. You don't usually see that.

7) Caprica; the drama spin-off to Battlestar Galactica. I'm actually not sure why I like this one so much, but I can tell you I did. It's a rather interesting drama that is technically a prequel to Battlestar Galactica, but I'd still watch it second.

8) Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles; it's not one of my favorites, but it's still pretty good. Unfortunately it ends just as it brings in a major plot arch which is a little bit of a kick in the balls, but it's still worth watching overall.

9) Fringe; an investigation series based around all sorts of crazy science that can be a little contrived a times but can be forgiven purely because of some of the better episodes with Walter Bishop (a genuinely mad, drugged up scientist) .

10) Sanctuary; it's a supernatural series that doesn't always hit the mark, but it's usually interesting. Notable for using almost all CGI sets. It's got a steam-punk vibe and worth watching if you've got the time and like monsters and general supernatural stuff.

11) Dark Angel; It's got an intriguing premise (a post severe EMP world), but the writing fails it after its second season ? and it?s not amazing to begin with. If you do like the series, don't watch the second season for the sake of your sanity. On the plus side; the setting is great and the action is usually pretty enjoyable. A lot of stuff gets blown up, too.

12) Jericho; a post-apocalyptic TV series that, while took a little while to find its feet, it's actually really good. There?s not much to say about it, except that it focuses on what would really happen to a small town if nuclear war occurred.

13) Doctor Who; I'm always hesitant to recommend it, because I'm not sure where to tell you to start watching. The start of the reboot, or whatever they called it, is awful. Yet I'm not sure where else they set up the premise. Opinions on it are always very polarized as well - either you love it or you hate it.

14) Andromeda; while it starts as a promising-but-flawed series it drops it?s lead writer after the second season ? and you can tell. It drops its continuity, changes a lot of the characters and general tone of the series (sigh, fucking space magic). If you?re really into space opera and want to watch it past its second season, jump to near the end of season three. It gets slightly better, though it?s still pretty jarring. If you don?t, the first two seasons are worth watching just because Lexa (who plays the ships AI) is pretty awesome.

15) Falling Skies; yet another hit-and-miss post apocalyptic series. This time it's aliens, and it's not horrible. A lot of the twists are stupidly predictible and it falls into the same pit as most post apocalyptic shows where there will be whole episodes where just nothing happens. It'll probably end up on the "not worth watching" list if it's second season doesn't get any better.

16) Red Dwarf; the British one. We don't talk about the American one, okay? Otherwise, this series was hilarious despite - and sometimes, because of - it's low budget. This is one of those shows that you must watch. Do it!

NOT WORTH WATCHING:

1) Dollhouse; the Joss Whedon show we don?t talk about. It has some of the worst acting that I?ve seen (fucking Eliza Dushku or however you spell it) from a sci-fi show with a proper budget and it has pretty poor writing overall. It?s a pretty good case for why Joss should stick to team-based character writing.

2) Star Trek: The Original Series; the captain is a sexist **** (who can?t act) and the writing is as poor as its production values. I?m not sure why anyone raves about it.

3) Star Trek: The Next Generation; I tried really hard to like it as I like Picard, but it?s writing is horrible. Its production values are horrible. The acting is horrible apart from Picard. After this and the Original Series I refuse to watch anymore Star Trek.

3) Babylon Five; another show I really wanted to like ? this time because of its impressive CGI (for the time, that is) and pretty decent sets and costumes. However, the acting is really bad (the commander of the base is easily as bad as Eliza Dushku) and the writing is pretty poor. I can?t stand ?galaxy police? philosophy the commander wants to force on everyone else.

4) Warehouse 13; this show gives me a head-ache. That?s an impressive feat for a sci-fi show (as the mere fact of being a sci-fi show is usually enough for me to watch it). Its poor writing and mediocre acting could probably be forgiven if its female lead wasn?t so fucking annoying. At one point it even looks like they?re about to kill her off between seasons ? and she fucking come back.

5) Eureka; it suffers from a lot of the same problems as its sister show, Warehouse 13. While occasionally it was enjoyable it is not worth wasting your time on.

6) Outcasts; a slow sci-fi series about a colony on another planet. It?s pretty boring if you?re not really into science fiction as it got cancelled just as it brings in all the mystery and intrigue. I actually enjoyed it, but it?s not worth watching.

7) Defying Gravity; I almost like this show. It takes a realistic approach to near future space travel ? but ruins it with irritating characters, even more annoying flash backs and a god-like space magic alien as the real reason behind the mission. If it was even just exploring the solar system I would have liked it.
Here's how I'd have sorted it (the ones I removed completely, I haven't watched)

WORTH WATCHING:

Stargate SG-1

Stargate Atlantis

Doctor Who

Red Dwarf

Star Trek: The Next Generation

NOT WORTH WATCHING:

Stargate Universe

Battlestar Galactica

Caprica

Sanctuary

Dollhouse

Warehouse 13

Eureka

...Yeah, I don't like a lot of TV shows. Or even give most a chance, really.

Has anyone mentioned Quantum Leap? It's campy and fun and full of bleep-bloopy technology. The latter seasons aren't really worth watching, though, except as examples of what /not/ to do with a story that has no clear ending.

ETA: the Dune miniseries. Didn't really care for the Lynch movie.

You... dislike Babylon Five? *eye twitch*

Sorry, but I just can't take your opinion seriously on this matter.

And "The John Chriton Show" started with promise, but quickly devolved into Ben Browder babbling pop-culture references that quickly became tiresome.

The Lexx movies, (not the series). Yea, it can be a little corny, but it's good hard science fiction with some interesting characters. Also, give Deep Space 9 a chance. It succeeds where every other star trek fails.

Not really a fan of sci-fi. There's just a couple of series I enjoy, and they're doing the sci-fi, just like I like it.

Futurama, and especially Cowboy Bebop.

There's some not-quite-worth-watching episodes on Futurama. Fry is boring and kind of annoying with the stupidity, in contrast to the hilarity of the general stupidness of Homer Simpson. Still an enjoyable show.

Cowboy Bebop has great characters, story, pace, style. Can't think of any faults worth a mention.

well, isn't it obvious? I hate myself, liberty and choice. And i best hope to serve my dark masters by denying myself of choice pieces of culture and joy.

Or my inherent leasning towards animoo and gaming get's the upper hand.

I see Sliders hasn't been mentioned yet, which is fucking shameful! Sliders was ace, or at least the first 2 seasons were. It started going downhill in season 3 and I never really saw much after that.

It's also quite dated now though, and the fx weren't that great at times anyway.

...Well, the OP mentioned a lot of my favorites/ones I'd like to watch.

(Honestly, I never liked Battlestar Galactica, I always found it too depressing, and the "everyone is a Cylon" thing got real old real fast.)

Anyway, If I had to recommend a sci-fi series that has't been mentioned yet... um... would Heroes count? But stick to the first season, it gets kinda lame afterwards. Goddamned Writer's Strike... EDIT: Ooh! Howabout Mystery Science Theater 3000? Anyone mention that yet?

A-hem. The problem is, I WANT to watch some of these shows, but the so-called "Sy-fy" channel only shows either crappy made-for-tv-movies, wrestling (which I wouldn't mind so much if it wasn't on the GODDAMNED SCIENCE FICTION CHANNEL!), or Battlestar Galactica, which again, I don't care for.

Can someone please explain to me what, exactly, is so amazing about Firefly? I love Sci-fi, I've seen a few episodes of the show and found it to be quite dull. Is it because it's a western in space? Because that *would* explain it's appeal for Americans.

I just can't stand John Crichton.

Different styles of show. While Babylon Five tries to be intelligent, Stargate is a really silly adventure for the most part.

No, it's not just becaue it's a western in space (though I like the idea). A lot of the attention is because of it's witty writing, humor, excellent attention to detail (seriously, the world building is staggering) and brilliant group character dynamic. Try watching it from the begining or, if that's too slow for your taste (which addmitedly the pilot is), try watching it's movie "Serenity".

So we did talk you into B5 hehe. try givin it more time, its a slow show to get into, and it gets much better after the commander change in season 2, and once you know the characters and thier backgrounds the relationships between them become very intresting. it is inteligently written, but its not jumping into your eyes waving how smart it is.

There are some people not liking firefly because of the show order. Fox shown the episodes in pretty much random order which put a lot of people off.
i mean this character alone is worth watching the series http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DKY68ZS7z0o
