I think religion topics are just annoying because it gets into this whole debate about people defending their religions and obviously if you're arguing for a religion, you've made your decision and I seriously doubt that some kid on a forum is going to convert you. It's pretty pointless if you ask me and I tend to avoid them.

The problem with religious discussion is that very few people agree on one thing. There are overzealous Atheists just as there are overzealous Christians.
It's difficult to find a middle ground for the theists and the... Atheists or even the Agnostic folk.

Me, I enjoy seeing religious debates though I very rarely input my own opinion (as I'm more or less Agnostic).
More often than not though, I specified debates which usually surmounts to some douchebag Atheist coming in a saying 'lolgod [/topic]' and then the war begins.

Then it's a big 'say hello to immaturity' since god knows no one can have anyone disagree with their opinion, especially over the internet.
The Atheist was still an asshole for starting the war but religious debates always turn into trouble.
Since the internet is serious business.

I avoid religious topics like the plague and would rather they didn't happen at all. Not because religious topics are inherently bad, but because people can't control themselves on the internet.
Unfortunately you're correct... there are a select few that realize that religion is a discussion about your opinions and how religion can help one's self be a better person overall or to help guide them if such guidance is needed, things like that... But unfortunately there are always going to be people who follow a certain religion or don't and will bash people who are any different... It's all about an individual's choice... not what is and isn't correct

Clearly, "pony!!1" is the only logical stance to take on this matter.
I prefer "OMG Pony" myself, but since that's not an option, I'll have to stick with "pony!!1".

I can add friend now?? lol, I put it in there just to keep things sort of light hearted, so that the discussion won't spontaneously combust

if they can be discussions to discuss the differences, or answer questions one may have about them, or even clear up some misconceptions, but can remain civil, and have an air of education to them " not indoctrination" then They are actually a nice way to share various cultures and experience...

when they become a who's wrong, who's right, " proverbial dick waving contest" that degrades into childish fights then its time to let them die off.

I'm actually quite happy with how the religion threads are going. As far as I know, theological/philosophical debate on the internet has thusfar boiled down to "christfags/heretics suck!" "no you suck!" "nu-uh you suck" etc etc etc.

The last big theologically inclined thread actually furthered my understanding and tolerance of theistic beliefs. Moreover, the debate that I've seen FAR outdoes the standard internet banter, and instead focuses on point-by-point debate.

Sure it's tiresome, and sure it's really really verbose, but as long as no-one gets over-excited and starts trolling we actually might have something going here.

Thats what I was wondering recently also, has it always been this way or is their some sort of Atheism trend?
It's becoming a shallow subculture, don't take any of em' seriously. ;-)
... I stand corrected. Round and round we go...

You remain standing when on the internet? Or did you just stand up to be corrected? In which case that's a bit of an odd ritual. ;-)
Wow. This comment is so retarded, I'm just baffled. I don't know exactly what to say, except: go back to 4chan.

This forum moves in ebbs and flows. One week its non stop religion, next week it changes to losers asking about girl advice, then zombies, then whatever. You get the idea. Just ignore it and within a week the religion threads will stop.
This is really really...true.
Religion threads now, girl advice next (Since, you know, a bunch of gamers on an internet forum is the perfect place to get advice on women), next it'll be 'OMG U H8 SKOOL 2 RITE?' (Since education is such a terrible thing), then it'll be homosexuals/girls/homosexual girls in gaming, then back to religion again.

Ugh.

Some people like to bang on about how useless or ridiclous religion is. others take a more measured approach.

It does puzzle me though, for people who arn't religious they certainly talk about it alot. Maybe they are all closet evangelicals
Naah. They are religious themselves, but they just can't stand it. Theophobia is the same as homophobia - the reason it terrifies some people is because they can't admit to themselves they 'built a certain way'.
atheists are not religious, if some of the atheists were religious they would actually say so, no one would have a reason to hide their religion on a forum (except maybe scientologists). We talk about it because we want to talk about it, and we want to understand it.

I suppose it?s the gems in-between that keep pullin? ya? back in?
Naah, it's the community. The ones that start the 'fad of the week' threads aren't the big names. They are the new people who have something to prove, or want a badge. I've already had the 'religious talk' with all the bigger names in the forum, and we respect each other's views, even if we don't always agree.
I stay for the videos, the good threads, the good people (You know who you are!), the good MODs, and the IRC (though, admittedly, I've been ignoring it as of late).

Coming to the Escapist is like going to a resort town in the middle of the summer. Lots of people who are new and aren't going to stick around very long saying stupid things and doing stupid things that don't really help the community in any way. But they don't care, they are probably just here for a little bit.
Then there are the people who live in the town, the ones who are here for while. They are the ones who can be fun, be funny, and not be a total douche-bag. They aren't making stupid threads, they aren't posting using idiotic internet acronyms, and they do post using proper grammar, spelling, and punctuation. They contribute to the community.
Them I like.
