Personally I would LOVE to throw back a Pepsi-meed-Cola while eating a ration-Nestle jerky, chillin at the WoW/Staple Center bar, sitting on a custom made Levits barstool, listening to Britany Spears's 'gimme gimme' song in the background while talking about the latest quest, sponsored by Hyundai!
That just sound to damn hilarious!!XD

If the developers designed the adverts or at least modified them then they wouldnt ruin the emersion would they? surely it would just increase it?
The people paying for the advertising space are going to be the ones calling the shots on what goes there. Alterations to their products are rarely accepted. It works best in a contemporary environment where no changes are necessary (ie. any sports game) but the advertising companies can be real sticklers about it. For instance, some companies don't take kindly to their vending machines being used as cover in a shooter, because you can pound their product with a hail of hot lead.

It's ridiculous, I know, but do you really expect more from them?

Well.... it depends, you have a good idea but at the same time, a lot of MMOs are about the immersion, an effect that would soon be ruined by advertisements from real life companies... A LOT OF ACTIVISION games have had this recently (Guitar Hero III with "5 Gum" adverts & Quantum of Solace with "Dorritos" advertising)... I HAVE A MASSIVE PROBLEM WITH THIS

1) Activision has so much money and make up probably more than 50% of every year's holiday sales with Call of Duty, Guitar Hero, and World of Warcraft (Activision Blizzard) alone! So why on Earth do they need to cheap out EVEN MORE with advertising

2) We let them get away with crap like this AND THEN they have the nerve to even think about adding fees to play ALL of their PC and console games online.

3)What if this affects Modern Warfare 2? How great would that be... the multi-million seller will become a giant laughing stock among the gaming community... Bungie will look at us and say: "HEY! Look at the Hubba Bubba & Corn Flakes adds!"... some experience that will be

People have already shown that they have no problem paying 15 bucks a month.

If you go with ads, the companies will expect data on how many people are playing the game at all given times and if they don't meet targets companies will pull out.
When companies start to pull out, the game will need a new source of income and look to the players either by microtransactions or subscriptions.
Players will be outraged because they bought the game on the idea that they could play for free.

It puts both the dev and the players in a rough spot.

If you rely on subscriptions, you know that money will be coming in as long as you can keep some sort of fan base going.

xD Your death penalty = 2 Coca Cola commercials and 1 Sham-Wow! commercial.
But that would totally be against its purpose =P
You'll get so pissed when you die, and then you'll have to sit through commercials ... Everytime you'll be walking in a store seeing a bottle of coke, you're going to snap =P

I can picture WoW without subscription fees......

"To complete your quest you must Go past the Mountain Dew river, over the Cheetos hill, defeat the dragon of Oxyclean, and then celebrate all night with the villagers of Pepsiville."
Your reward? A 6 pack of Coors Light, and a bag of Cape Cod potato chips.

It would certainly liven up the game, I can tell you that much :p
But couldn't you say that you get advertising like that in things like Skate and the Tony Hawk's games, with all the brand names and what not?

It would only work for big big games, but those games already make enough money not to want to try it

I don't understand at all why people are saying no

I have said it about 1000 times now, the DEVs would be making the advertising so it would be nothing that would annoy you or get in your way anyway

Maybe its just people with more money than sense

I would be much more likely to play a MMOG if I didn't have to pay a subscription. I would be sure I was playing the game out of free will, and because I found it fun, not because I feel I need to get my months worth of play time.

Nope. I would happily pay than see adverts in game.

Or maybe they just dont like adverts. It doesnt matter who does them they're still annoying as hell.

And to say that people who spend £8.99 a month to play a game have more money than sense... shut up.

Heh, someone is taking it a little too seriously :p

£8.99 a month is £107.88 anyone with good taste and some sense would spend that on different things

someone with more money than sense would spend it on an subscription that they probably wont get there moneys worth from

besides, well done adverts aren't annoying

This is a bad idea on par with being beaten to death by goats.
It'd completely kill any immersion factor, for one.
MMMORPGs have immersion? Also, it'd be worth killing the immersion in exchange for the game having a semi-reasonable price.
For two, can you imagine billboards advertising Coke in Warhammer Online?
No, no you cannot.
Well actually I could, and it's a lot easier than imagining someone paying 144$ a year at best for one fucking game.

I voted no, ingame advertising will never cover the costs that running a mmo run up

Do you honestly think blizzard would get (15x£9/$18) about £135,000,000 per month from ingame advertisements? also if all games switched it would be that things like the economy would start to affect which games we can and carn't play even moreso than it does now

Stop wanting everything for free/someone else to pick up the cost for you, bum
Just look at television, they are constanly broadcasting material to a global audience in the billions and do it 24/7. If a 20 second commercial can sustain that kind of giant then a loading screen with products on it could surly sustain an online game.
Theres ALOT more people who watch TV compared to how many play WoW, also adverts on TV are placed right in the middle of programs people want to watch, would you like your game to pause for 5 minutes every 30 just so you can play for free? even then it wouldn't make sense from a business point of view because mmo's are a cliche market as it is and advertising in one would be very tricky.

How many people played BF2142 and decided to go out and buy a intel CPU or go watch I AM LEGEND just because they might have noticed the billboard while they were sniping somebody in the face do you think?

The irony of most pc gamers makes me laugh my ass off, half of you cry up in arms when somebody wants to curb a certain type of game or remove certain bits of content, yet you demand MMO's to have obtrusive ad's just so you can play them for free?

You yourselves will be the downfall of pc gaming if ever there will be one, mmo's are the only market consoles havnt nailed yet and its all because pc gamers are used to getting 'EVERYTHING I WANT, HOW I WANT IT WAAA WAA' while console gamers just get on with it, i payed for my computer, i pay for my mmo's... they both provide me with entertainment so who cares how little it costs?

Or you could spend $9 in 20 minutes at mcdonalds or starbucks or w/e and that makes who have the least sense?

Bottom line is;
Grow up, nothing in life is free.
Ingame adverts will never catch on, don't like it DONT PLAY IT.
You will never have a say in the matter, boo hoo.
