What if they just had commercials? Maybe while you're loading a new map, or realm, or before boss fights. That would be okay with me.
That's what we where talking about to begin with
That's a great idea

But some people seam to be blowing it out of proportion talking about stupid adverts popping up in the middle of a game

In principle, yes.

My only reservation is that free games attract asshats like moths to a flame. But I guess if all games were free, then that would probably negate the problem somewhat. Maybe if there were paid servers with bonus content and things for the dedicated players, then that would make things a little better.

Meh. Still, free gaming is free gaming.

No. I play games to escape real life, not have it shoved in my face with advertisements. We have enough advertisements in real life as it is.

Theres ALOT more people who watch TV compared to how many play WoW, also adverts on TV are placed right in the middle of programs people want to watch, would you like your game to pause for 5 minutes every 30 just so you can play for free? even then it wouldn't make sense from a business point of view because mmo's are a cliche market as it is and advertising in one would be very tricky.

How many people played BF2142 and decided to go out and buy a intel CPU or go watch I AM LEGEND just because they might have noticed the billboard while they were sniping somebody in the face do you think?

The irony of most pc gamers makes me laugh my ass off, half of you cry up in arms when somebody wants to curb a certain type of game or remove certain bits of content, yet you demand MMO's to have obtrusive ad's just so you can play them for free?

You yourselves will be the downfall of pc gaming if ever there will be one, mmo's are the only market consoles havnt nailed yet and its all because pc gamers are used to getting 'EVERYTHING I WANT, HOW I WANT IT WAAA WAA' while console gamers just get on with it, i payed for my computer, i pay for my mmo's... they both provide me with entertainment so who cares how little it costs?

Or you could spend $9 in 20 minutes at mcdonalds or starbucks or w/e and that makes who have the least sense?

Bottom line is;
Grow up, nothing in life is free.
Ingame adverts will never catch on, don't like it DONT PLAY IT.
You will never have a say in the matter, boo hoo.

Fin.
Wow has 13 million people, you don't think advertisers would pay for that? Also, why not put ads in the loading screens, pause screens, and maybe in those menu thingies?

How many people buy cheetos or w/e because they endorse a nascar racer? EIther my dad is right and the advertisers want to maximize your exposure so the product looks more common place or advertisers are imbeciles.

Who said it'd be Obtrusive? ALso, I"m pretty sure this is a different category than "they removed my favorite race from starcraft", this is more outside the game than the problems pc gamers normally bag on and on about.

What the fuck does that last paragraph mean? All I could respond to is MMOs being the only market consoles haven't nailed down. RTSes.

Compare games to other games please, not mc donalds. I don't care what 9$ a month gets you at mcdonalds I care what is gets me at ebay for games.

I don't care if the game is free I just want it to be comparable to other games and I don't want subscriptions. If I had to pay 60$ to get the game and have ads I'd be fine.

I never expected them to catch on doesn't mean they shouldn't, which is what this thread is about if I"m not mistaken.

So because I don't have a say in the matter I don't have the right to complain? Screw off.

Actually thats been done. Anarchy Online did that, and they have an option to play for free, which is where "fr00bs" came from. Theres also the option to pay, and you get perks and some other stuff for subscribing, but it is not required, and they have ads around the cities, not really a big deal it fits right in. Its actually a pretty good idea! I think there may have been another game that had ads in it but I cant remember.... was it 2 moons?

This is a bad idea on par with being beaten to death by goats.
It'd completely kill any immersion factor, for one.
MMMORPGs have immersion? Also, it'd be worth killing the immersion in exchange for the game having a semi-reasonable price.
For two, can you imagine billboards advertising Coke in Warhammer Online?
No, no you cannot.
Well actually I could, and it's a lot easier than imagining someone paying 144$ a year at best for one fucking game.
gibboss28 said:
Nope. I would happily pay than see adverts in game.

Maybe its just people with more money than sense
Or maybe they just dont like adverts. It doesnt matter who does them they're still annoying as hell.

And to say that people who spend £8.99 a month to play a game have more money than sense... shut up.
You do know how much 9$ a month is at the end of the year right?? A lot.
Yes, yes they can have.
And if you don't want to pay a monthly fee, don't play them? I'd rather be stuck with a stupid fee than see advertising in-game.[/quote]I don't play them. I don't got the cash to spend 144$ a year on one game. If I did I'd be too busy swimming in my pool made of money to care. regardless of how much I wanna be part of those raids.

Name me one ingame ad that would fit in a setting like WoW's?

I double fucking dare you, you can't thats why...

I pay for mmo's to stop myself from seeing shit like this, i purposely don't play crappy F2P games because i don't want too see this shit ruining the game atmosphere.

"THRALL, THE UNDEAD SCOURGE HAS BROKEN IN OGRIMMAR, QUICK.. DRINK REDBULL... ITS GIVES YOU WIIINNNGGGSSSSS"

It won't ever happen, also im sorry mike.. what game could you buy for $9 that would be garuanteed to give you fun for a whole month? one of those whitelabel games from the bargin bin? (Even those are like $15, lol)

I used the old fast food argument because eating fast food is much like playing an mmo, you could just play F2P/stay at home and have some lettuce which is okay for a while, but sometimes its nice to pay and outsource for a different experience, you're a real person sat behind that computer (i hope) and you need real things to live and then extra things are just luxurys, gaming is the same so take your shit and shut it please

In a modern/near future setting like bf2/cs/bf2142 fine some ads fit the setting of the game, but the day i load up a fantasy mmo and its litered with adverts for moutain dew or the latest 50-pence game/film is the day i stop playing mmo's, i play for the immersion/atmosphere and setting, ingame ad's ruin all those.

Again, keep up the QQ that you'r stuck in school and mummy won't let you use her credit card :)

And here i was thinking the escapist had a more mature audience compared to other forums i've seen, lol.

Good idea but you'd have to have an advert saying "Phew, that was hard work wasn't it? How about a Pepsi?" everytime you killed something for it to work.

Considering WoW has (I think correct me if I'm wrong) 11 million players paying £8.99 each per month - that's alot of advertising.

Also scary fact I worked out from that - Blizzard earns around £38.19 a second from subscriptions alone. KACHING £.£

Wows! that's... a lot... is that why there in no rush to bring out another game? :p

I guess for it to work the developer would need to care about its fans A LOT more than making a profit

There should be *one* game, made in this style. Made nauseatingly thick with it.

'Cos product placement has been super self-aware for a while now. A comedy show has to stick in some product placement, so they write it into the episodes: "Wow, we sure are using a lot of product placement! We're whores! But we're so 4th-wall-breaking and meta!" This technique totally works. So yeah, make one free MMO where everything is branded so thoroughly that it's the main theme of the game. All the big companies can get in on it and make a zillion bucks. Win-win.
