Well on the moral aspect of things, I don't like the fact that we kill people simply for the self gratification of it all, even if they are the utter scum of the earth. But looking at it from a practical point of view; There isn't much use for a person who spent 20 years in prison for murder and has no hope of rehabilitation and might still pose as a threat to society. It's just a waste of tax payers money. Since they no longer contribute anything to society, you'll probably just be doing them a favor with the death penalty...

If we could just "shoot them in the head" maybe we'd be better off. However, while I wouldn't mind that solution myself as soon as we see society take that idea on we're looking at a quick and downward spiral real fast.
I say we bring back the colliseum and public hangings(5$ per person to attend either).
The executions would pay for themselves.

No. It is never justifiable. I consider Revenge one of the 10 deadliest sins on the earth (Yep, 10 for me: 5 of the original ones: Pride, Greed, Envy, Lust, and Wrath, and 5 New Ones: Abuse (Substances), Revenge, Suicide, Deceit, and (Constant) Fear).

This debate could be going on until the cows come home.

But my opinion, yes... I think it is justified. If you willingly take the life of another person purely for pleasure and without reason, then I think you have lost the right to life yourself.

And as human beings we are ruled by emotions, completely.... and until we attain a certain attonement we always will be. Seeking revenge as a form of retribution is ruled by emotion, not intillect. If the day comes where we let common sense and logic take place of emotion, then you will probably see the death penalty go, as well as the crimes that make it necessary.

The question is a little shaky for me. Revenge is such a broad term. If you kill someone to get revenge on them for stealing your favorite toy. HELL NO! it is not justified. But killing someone who killed one of your loved ones is completely justified in my opinion.

the difference is that, while we are taking pleasure in it, these people are actually out there doing things that they deserve to be punished for. by allowing the death sentence, we know we are doing the same as them, but allowing them to go on is unacceptable. the real difference is that the ones instigating death penalty instead of being subject to it, they are at least sound-of-mind to the extent required to function is society and not kill others for glee whenever the hell they want.
