ATTENTION: This ONLY applies to single-player games or campaign modes, not any kind of multiplayer.

Do you like them? Or would you rather have stats and everything be constant throughout the game?

If so, what kinds do you like to have? It would help me if you were as specific as possible. There is a purpose behind this other than my curiosity.

Also, I know Mass Effect is third person, but I'm referring to its upgrade system, not core gameplay.

EDIT: WTF, poll disappeared but the question is still there...

Well my favourite FPS is Deus Ex which has a fair amount of RPG elements. Also really enjoyed Borderlands as well.

Personally really liked Deus Ex's take on the RPG thing buy having the player gain points (kind of like XP) to upgrade various different attributes like gunplay, hacking, and a whole host of other bits and pieces.

EDIT: Typo's.

Fallout 3 is a stern example of a hybrid of the two styles. But the one thing that will always bite me about these types of games is that if I am attacking a level "whatever" person or monster, my bullets will never do the damage they would in the real world. Its not a big issue or a game destroyer, but something to improve upon.

I love RPGs!
Borderlands had RPG elements?

I wouldn't call a handful of stats an RPG element.
would you call Diablo an RPG? if so then Borderlands was pretty close.

cmon it was even more RPGish than Bioshock!

The E comes before the U, stranger.

But yeah, I really liked Borderlands and what it did with its RPG elements, just like I did with Deus Ex. When done gracefully, I think they're actually pretty fun.

You gain Experience from quests and killing things which you use to level up. You can get loot from dead enemies and quests. You can play as four different classes who can specialize in three different aspects each.
I'd call that RPG elements.

Mass Effect isn't an first-person shooter, it's more like an Action RPG in third person. Where do you even get the first person part on that one? But yeah, it makes the game type more bearable. I generally hate first-person shooters (except Team Fortress 2), but Borderlands is ok. I can't play it for long amounts of time, but it's good for the genre.

I know, but it was just a good example of an upgrade system.

More RPG elements would be great. I'm starting to get very bored with FPS' single player. I would say more like Mass Effect, but that's third person. So something more like Fallout 3 would be nice, just with better shooting mechanics.

First-person? Don't think there is any.

Shooter? Mass Effect.
Mass effect was less of an RPG than Borderlands...
