it can be fun when they don't over do it I mean like you are lining up the perfect headshot your sure you hit him but no my sniper rifle skill isn't high enough, but in a game like mass effect where as long as your class could use it you could still hit something I love um.

Yes, all the FPSs with RPG elements and RPGs with Shooter combat that I've played were great. Especially Mass Effect and Fallout 3.

In general yes, but it doesn't suit all games, like some combat simulators or shooters with a serious tone.

Fallout 3 is a stern example of a hybrid of the two styles. But the one thing that will always bite me about these types of games is that if I am attacking a level "whatever" person or monster, my bullets will never do the damage they would in the real world. Its not a big issue or a game destroyer, but something to improve upon.
Bullets in games never do the damage they would in the real world. Ever.

Borderlands was amazing!
I love RPGs!
Borderlands had RPG elements?

I wouldn't call a handful of stats an RPG element.
You gain Experience from quests and killing things which you use to level up. You can get loot from dead enemies and quests. You can play as four different classes who can specialize in three different aspects each.
I'd call that RPG elements.
I'd call that a shooter with loot.
Then what would you call RPG elements
Loot doesn't have anything to do with playing a role, sweetie.
a) the game had exp leveling and unique classes.

b) I wouldn't say that loot has nothing to do with rp, what items your character is using can have a lot to do with rp, because it's a choice. It's also an almost universal feature in rpgs.

Yet it is an RPG-element.

If it's an RPG, it's an RPG; if it's a shooter, I generally want it to remain a shooter. The first FPS I recall using RPG elements was No One Lives Forever 2, where upgrading your skills basically made it so that you did things faster. By the time you had your weapons skills fully leveled up, the main difference was that reloading only took one second, effectively removing ammo management as a game mechanic. Improving my skills shouldn't mean removing elements of the game.

That said, I'm certainly not going to refuse to play a game because it has RPG elements. Maybe the great shooter that puts these elements to good use is still out there, and I'm just yet to give it a shot.

Well my favourite FPS is Dues Ex which has a fair amount of RPG elements. Also really enjoyed Borderlands as well.

Personally really liked Dues Ex's take on the RPG thing buy having the player gain points (kind of like XP) to upgrade various different attributes like gunplay, hacking, and a whole host of other bits and pieces.
Deus Ex is an RPG, just with a first-person perspective.
No it's not. Fallout 3, Oblivion? Those two are RPGs from a first-person perspective. Deus Ex just has skills and an inventory, most of its gameplay is still of the first-person shooter type.
Not really; it's quite possible to go through it without shooting anyone, let alone killing them.

Yeah, it helps alleviate the pain of just using a shotgun/ machine gun 100% of the time.

I guess this might need to cleared up a bit-

RPG elements in this case may include but are not limited to weapon upgrades, skill progression, levels, perks, loot, choices in gameplay style, etc.

I suppose a good point to make here is that does FEEL like an RPG. Also it would help to realise people play RPGs and enjoy various things about it. Me? i like the whole make my own guy or insert my unique personality into my game. Fallout 3 does this best for me as i have total control on how my character reacts and acts etc. Mass effect has a similar feel, but the persona thing is hampered as you only have that one voiceover (two if you count the female voice) and you only ever have good/neutral/evil paths for dialogue. But it does shooting better than fallout does (despite the cool guns you get), fallout relies too heavily on the VATS system to call itself a shooter proper. Mass effect one had great rpg elements but clumsy combat, Mass Effect 2 had great combat but fuck all rpg elements. yes mass effect is a TPS rather than a FPS but the principles are the same as what we want from this blending process. I havent played Deus Ex but im gonna get it to see if it gets any closer.

I ramble a bit, but its hard to put this into words really.

The E comes before the U, stranger.

But yeah, I really liked Borderlands and what it did with its RPG elements, just like I did with Deus Ex. When done gracefully, I think they're actually pretty fun.
Fixed. Damn you'd think I would know for to spell it considering I have been playing it for about 8 years...
