There are several different perspectives of RPGS lately, some people feel that they have grown out of JRPGs and find the storylines cheezy as well as the gameplay linear, others prefer JRPGs for thier lighthearted and heavily focused storyline criteria as well as character designs etc.

I personally like some JRPGs and find others a tad repetitive of popular JRPGS, one guy, lots of cute girls, evil effeminate man etc, but the same could be said for WRPGs plagued with what I am beginning to find boring, elves, dwalves etc etc. So I suppose playing the likes of Fallout 3 or Monster Hunter are differences on both sides I could definitely get used to.

Which types of RPGs do you prefer if any and why?

JRPGs. They have an infinite number of settings and I love the anime aesthetic when properly applied to games (SW: So Long, My Love, Persona 4). And I'm that sadistic bastard who enjoys grinding and dungeon crawling.

I play both.

If it has a good, rewarding combat system, I'll play it. FF13 and Dragon Age: Origins are my favorite examples of combat systems that I enjoy.

I don't play RPGs for the story, after all. Any genre can tell a story, and not take 30-60 hours to do it, either.

OMFG! JRPGs are leading in the poll for this moment. It will soon be a giant bar for WRPGs, though.

JRPGs are different from one game to another, where the usual RPG involves Knights mages and world of warcraft-y stuff. I get bored after a while with that, so thats why I like JRPGs

A good game is a good game, no matter the genre; although just to be my usual biased self, Disgaea and the vast majority of NIS games belong to JRPG, so JRPG = winner in my opinion.

Western.

Gameplay wise, I've never seen a JRPG that appeals, and I hate the aesthetics of most too.

I went with WRPG I generally prefer their setting and combat more than JRPGS, however every now and then I find a gem in the JRPG such as the Star Ocean series

I suppose it depends on what story is being told, lol, I have yet to play a gripping-storyline FPS, racer or beat-em-up for examples :D

Though the likes of Uncharted prove you point to a slight degree.

Funny, I was thinking the same thing. Except it was about WRPGs being different, and JRPGs being all alike with certain characters and setting.

I like both about equally. I count Persona 4, Chrono Trigger, Earthbound, TES III: Morrowind, KOTOR, and Dragon Age: Origins among my favorite games of all time. I am not particularly picky. Just so long as it has an interesting story, I am good.

I'm not big on "gripping". I care more about the events going on, than how "immersed" in the events I am.

Like, I'll play something like Heavy Rain just for the story. (Even if the acting was terrible, I love me some crime dramas!) But I'm not going to sit through a 30-60 hour RPG just for the story.

Hence why if Bioware doesn't make Mass Effect 3 into an actual RPG, I'm not going to bother with it.

I prefer Western RPGs, I'm just more into fantasy and sci-fi settings, which most WRPGs feature.

I like Turn based combat though, so I wouldn't completely object to a JRPG if one came around that I could get into.

WRPGs a great and fun, with classics like Planescape and Baldur's Gate. However, I have to give it to JRPGs simply due to the variety in the genre; I know that a few big series take up most of the flak of the field, but there are countless little games here and there, especially from companies such as Atlus, Mistwalker, NIS, etc... They also just give a great sense of the genre. And I, for one, love a good bad dubbing every once and a while. Thank you Chaos Wars. Lol.

Everyone to thier own :)

I'm impartial to both states of mind, I like gripping plots, but only in a good game, if the gameplay sucks, then the storyline is ruined either way as glitches and such will make the game unplayable and certain areas and such inaccessible, which just brings the plot to a cement wall stopping halt, by the time you get back into it and past the issue at hand, you'd need to replay everything to remember what was going on in the first place.

But yeah, I think a storyline gives me reason to want to continue playing a game besides sheer fun and anarchy I can cause.

I've played both, although I have played more WRPGs than JRPGs. I like aspects of both: the aesthetics in JRPGs are often amazing to just look at, yet the gameplay can often get repetitive (grinding, especially if I need to do a lot of it beat a certain section). WRPGs have a lot of great visuals too, like the cliff view overlooking the island at the end of KOTOR (go look it up, for an XBOX game, it's beautiful). The combat isn't quite as repetitive, although I find myself only being able to play Oblivion in short sessions (under 1 hour).

So if the game looks interesting, I'll give it a chance. I'm open to most any adventure and if it includes fantasy, sci-fi elements or crazy enemies, then I'll probably be interested. And a good story doesn't hurt either :)

I generally prefer WRPGs and I have played more of them, than I have JRPGs. That being said, there are some JRPGs I really like. Tales of Symphonia is probably my favorite JRPG, mostly because the gameplay is fun, there were quite a few interesting characters and all in all I found it to be a very enjoyable game.

Overall though I have enjoyed more WRPG games than JRPGs,so I chose WRPG.

I liked Final Fantasy before it turned into bubble headed technopunk bullcrap with melodramatic, emo, angsty, pre-teens whining about their mysterious past. Seriously, what sane person could possibly like Final Fantasy 7-13?

I like role-playing games like Fallout: New Vegas and Dragon Age: Origins. Whatever WTFJWDWAOIJFWDKJLSASDASDDRPG's they happen to be in abbreviation-land.

I prefer JRPG's. I like all the varying battle systems such as Star Oceans, open circular battle map. or Any of the Turn based Battles. or the Suikoden Method where it implements some TBS elements. I also like the way the characters with all the colors and what not. looking at Fallout or Oblivion all I see is brown, those are good games, and I do enjoy them every now and again, but my main love is JRPG's
