My favourite would be any of the DoW games...
I think Halo... (I can't actually remember :D ) kinda ruined it... but that's my opinion.

I'm not really into RTSs, but that's purely because of my own personal preference to bash things in the face...personally. I'd rather do that than order 50 dudes to do it. If I game blended that somehow with RTSs, I would play that.

I want a new one that actually involves tactics, not "make powerful unit and lots of and kill" forumla that most rts have

It is just a shame that not other RTS will ever live up to the glory that the Warcraft series has established. You remember those games don't you? It was that during that time before Blizzard started putting out the mindless dribble that is WOW.

We need more combinations of TBS and RTS like the Total Wars. I've also always been a fan of Age of Empires.

RTS is definitely my favourite genre, and I think its having a great time! With solid titles like Dawn of War II, Empire: Total War and many others already released, and Starcraft II and Napoleon: Total War still to come, I think RTS is certainly on the rise. Heck, their even getting decent console RTS's like End War, which I rather like. Still, a lot of work to get a good RTS on consoles yet... if its even possible.

Unfortunately I have a Macbook so my experience with RTS's are limited... still, my favourite will have to be End War, for its rather sweet voice control, even if it doesn't always work.

As a huge fan of the old Total Annihilation, my personal modern favourite is spiritual successor Supreme Commander.

As for the future, game makers must understand that strategy games are MEANT to be hard. Stop trying to dumb down future games (I'm looking at you, CnC4) and everything will be fine.

Between the legacy Warcraft III and Starcraft established, the Total War series, the upcoming Supreme Commander sequal (which I heard has some awesome new pathfinding tech) and the new non-linear direction most RTS games like Dawn of War II are heading in, how can there be any doubt that the genre is going strong?

Edit: Oh, and Sins of a Solar Empire definitely doesn't hurt, either.

Stormrise was a bust though, which is a shame since I wanted the whole vertical map thing to work so badly.

I like both Rise of Nations and Rise of Legends. They're kinda obscure, but have a lot of strategy involved, don't just mass produce troops and send them to kill...

But the worst one I've played is hands down Empire at War. Sorry, but Star Wars let me down BIG TIME

Battlezone, Battlezone II, Savage, Savage 2, etc...
While there aren't that many good iterations of what you describe, there are a few.

Anyway, RTS is a very interesting and diverse genre.

Currently I'm quite into Supreme Commander. :)

Everyone will start playing Starcraft 2 and Blizzard will buy the world.
...and then will battle Microsoft for the chair of Emperor of the Universe in an RTS developed by 3D Realms.
