One day there will be Company of Heroes 2.

And every other RTS designer will weep bitter tears.

If it doesn't include Russians and/or Japanese, then I'll be weeping bitter tears.

But yeah, I think the RTS genre is doing jut fine. A lot of the old series's (Empire, Starcraft, AoE, C&C and such) are still going strong, and there are plenty of fresh new games like the DoW series, and Company of Heroes that are doing something a bit different and pushing the genre forward. And that's just the mainstream ones. Theres plenty of lesser known games - like men of war - coming out too.

How so? The series has always been about goofy, over-the-top stories (hmm... time travel, mind control, battles on the moon...) and terrible, hammy acting (I don't know who plays the president in Yuri's Revenge, but he's a great example). And it's awesome for it. In my eyes, it's gotten progressively better.

Skip the Japanese, give us North African desert campaigns!

YES! That would be fantastic. Desert Rats vs Afrika Korps, all that good shit. In fact I'd settle for anything that isn't the countryside of Europe.

Don't get me wrong, I loved the game, but I'd like to see something other than hedgerows and villages in the 2nd game :D

I've heard EA messed up the balance in CAC3, which leavs my paranoid about RA3. Since it sounds like you've played, are my worries muisguided?

It's going down the toilet, it was great. If Westwood became their own company again, then their is hope

I keep buying more and more advanced RTS games, but i still have the most fun on the sprite based ones, such as Tiberian sun.

Also, it's not REALLY an RTS, but DUNGEON KEEPER GOLD FTW!

Halo Wars was a shite game. Best RTS on the 360 that I have played was Lord Of The Rings: Battle For Middle Earth 2.
Starcraft is one of my favourite games of all time ad i still play it regularly.

the rts genre is like my drug i loves it especially the dow games, cos nothing beats jumping in on someone with assault marines and then while their all confused blast em apart with heavy bolters.

My favourite RTS games:
-------------------------------------------------
Warcraft 3 + The Frozen Throne
Starcraft
Dawn of War
Command & Conquer: Red Alert 2
-------------------------------------------------

I think RTS gaming still only works on the PC or the Mac, controls for console RTS games make them irritating to play.

Also, I really enjoyed the Dawn of War 2 demo...I still need to play more of that game.

I am really looking forward to Starcraft 2. I don't really think the genre is in any trouble.

I want a new one that actually involves tactics, not "make powerful unit and lots of and kill" forumla that most rts have
That would be Starcraft.

Go get it.

It's 10 years old and still well worth it.

I actually haven't played yet, but I love what I have seen so far and am really looking forward to playing it. I apologize for getting your hopes up.

C&C has always had unbalanced units. Just look back at how overpowered the Yuri faction was in RA 2 for a good example. But it's never been anything truly game breaking. RA 3 is good online faction wise. There is no one strat thats going to get you a win ever single game, unlike some of the strats in RA 2. It's definitely a slower paced game now though, more like the Tiberium series in that sense. The Empire of the Rising Sun is currently a bit overpowered in the hands of a good player but it's really not that bad.

The real problem with RA 3 is all the bugs it has right now. Lots of the higher level tech trees become fudged up if you don't upgrade things in the right order. Sometimes the game can bug and not let you purchase higher level tech units at all, which is basically already a game over in any multiplayer game.

That said though it's not like that happens every game, it's pretty rare but it's there.

OT: RTS's are fine. They are going strong and will continue to be a huge part of PC games.
