Where's the "I'd do it for a lot less" option?

Seriously, give me a hundredth of that and I'd still do it. 1/6? Not gonna happen to me!
Don't refuse, though. If you don't need it all, how about we split it? (the money, not the risk).

Note some variations mean each person takes a turn until finally it does go off. This scenario is just one shot as I imagined the vast majority of people wouldn't participate if it was guaranteed that someone would die. Anyway, it's not supposed to be directly off the "rules" if that even applies. Just something to ponder.

Here is the theoretical scenario..

Someone offers to engage you in a game of Russian Roulette. He has a 6 shooter. He loads it with 1 round. He rotates the cylinder several times so it is unknown which chamber the round is in. He hands you the gun, and says "Pull the trigger against your head. If you live, I give you $500 million dollars." Would you do it?

Me.. tough. Only a 1 in 6 chance. But I don't think I would do it.

EDIT: For the people who want circumvent the question..

You know the money is good, it's there. You can't see the round.. But he tells you it's a low velocity round sure to turn your brain into jelly as it ricochets around inside your skull. You have to put the barrel directly to a fatal part your head. And no, you can't shoot him.
I'll do what I like, thank you very much. I'll take the gun, hit him over the head with it repeatedly, take the money and leave.

I'm not going to risk killing myself for 500 million. Not for any amount of money.

for 500 million i'd never have to work ever again
and with a 5 out of 6 chance i live i don't think i can pass up the chance to be that rich
and even if i fail, chances are that i won't even realise by the time it's too late
It's not 5-6

It's 1 in 6, then 1 in 4, then 1 in 2

I would check the sides to see if I could see the bullet. If I couldn't, I would pretend to be bad with guns and "accidentaly" miss and only slightly get injured.
This, with most revolvers, a quick examination can tell you if there is a round in the chamber. Even if I couldn't tell, I'd still do it, the interest from $500 mil is several hundred grand a year, more than enough to live off comfortably for the rest of your life.

Of course not. A one in six probability is not something to stake your life on. Your mathematical expectation would end up being 5/6 x 500 million + 1/6 x -∞. Therefore, this course of action is inadvisable.

Hmm... 500 mil for a 17 percent chance of death.... BRING IT ON BABY!

Hell, even if I die, everyone in my family could live comfortably for generations!

I would do it.

Sure, I would be nervous and probably take a few attempts to pull the trigger, but I would do it. The way I see it - If it doesn't go off then I have won a heck of a lot of money, and if it does go off I'm not really going to know about it am I?

Yes, I seem to be missing part of my survival instinct but that doesn't bother me in the slightest :p

This.

Besides, I've already played it 5 times- my odds aren't looking good if I play it again...
It's actually ~40% to life, I say go for it.

OP, you do know that with a revolver, you CAN see where the bullet is in if you closely inspect the gun. Maybe not the exact chamber, but definitely if you're in danger of turning your brain to jelly.

OT: Make it 50 billion and I'll consider it.

Wasn't the point of Russian Roulette that when it was originally played, the revolvers used would never fire the loaded bullet. I read somewhere that if only one bullet was loaded then it wouldn't be able to push it to the top and keep it there as when it reached 9 o'clock it would keep moving. Think that's probably BS tho...

I say yes, if I can look at the gun for ten seconds before hand.

Well. To quote TK. "You gotta risk it all, if you're ever really gonna win big." So sure why not.

Yeah, that could me and my family loaded for life. Besides, it's only a 1 in 6 chance to die. As long as he shows me the money first and I SEE him rotate the barrel a couple a times, I'm game.
