TL;DR: Would you use a keyboard with a specialized set of control keys to the left of the letter keys if available, over standardized WASD controls?

Edit:

There are. That's what gaming keyboards are for.

Eh, it just takes time to get used to WASD, I might try out a newer keyboard to see if it's easier for me to use, but for now I'll stick to WASD. It's actually quite comfortable. Besides, in most games you shouldn't be talking while moving. Save that for when you're in cover, or just buy a mic.

Feds is far superior: left hand rests on the home row, with index finger on the nub of the "F" key, access to many more keys, the shift, caps lock, modifier keys and number keys are all in standard locations... How "Wads" ever even cought on is beyond me.

YES!

Fuck WASD. It feels so unnatural, so clunky to move with it. Gives you about 8 directions to move in. I know I can use the mouse to point, but compared to the stick combo on the Xbox controller it feels... the opposite of smooth, and primitive.

Also, "do you want a better alternative" is a bit of a poorly worded question. Even if something is brilliant, if there is an alternative to it that is better, of course people are going to want it.

Yeah, I practiced and perfected my keyboard usage over the use just to start learning all over again, that sounds like a good idea.

The suggestion of adding yet more keys reminds me of this XKCD comic.

Ever since the first day I used WASD, I thought it was so hilariously simple. I mean, I just got a new laptop after having a laptop that couldn't do shit for a couple years, and yet I can instantly pick up the control scheme again. I honestly never understood the problem with it.

I find WASD controls problematic because they are so unbelievably commonplace almost to the point of an unmodifiable standard. If it were easier to get your fingers oriented around WASD buttons from touch I wouldnt have nearly the issues.
I can't help but think the issue is with you, not with the control scheme. It's common place to the point that not getting used to it is borderline impossible.

I use a special gaming Keypad (the <url=http://www.logitech.com/keyboards/keyboard/devices/5123>Logitech G13 if you must know), and that's far more comfortable to use than my keyboard since it's designed to fit the hand perfectly, and my keyboard is ergonomic which is great for typing, but not so good for gaming.

WASD is good, and lots of people like it and use it. Those who have a problem should change key bindings (ALL PC games should let you fully customise controls), or get one of the many gaming peripheral alternatives that have been mentioned so far.

EDIT: Upon looking, it seems that Razer has picked up the Nostromo product name and is continuing production. ( http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004AM5RB6/ ) If I get pulled in to SW:TOR, I may have to look at my budget about replacing my old Belkin.
No. You will beg borrow and steal to buy one of these MoFos

http://www.everythingusb.com/images/list/razer_star_wars_old_republic_keyboard_full.jpg

No idea when they come out, or how much they'll cost (considering they are full of LEDs and Mini LCD displays I would imagine a lot), but you have to agree that thing is badass.

EDIT: That trackpad is also a display, and the buttons above it are also displays that bind to your equipped powers automatically. I got to have a go with TOR (though not using that bad boy), and I found it to be quite fun. granted it took me a while to acclimatise to the controls as I'm not an MMO player, and knew nothing about my character or the abilities going in.

If I wanted a different input device I would buy one yes, but the default typing stance and WASD fit very nicely so I got no need for it.

And no one is in any way limited by choice of controllers on PC's, so spread your wings a little and find what you like.

Nope. That would make the already oversized keyboards even wider, and to left of those keys is where my macro keys are. Learn to touch type.

Seriously, that's not a flame. Once you know how to do that, it's nothing to get your hands back where they belong with your eyes closed.

I used to find it weird and uncomfortable when I tried controlling PC games using the WASD keys. But then I realized it's not too different from a console controller do to the fact that both make it so that the movement buttons are controlled by my left hand. Once I started using that mindset, I found the WASD keys to be very comfortable to use.

So no, I personally wouldn't want to change the way I control characters in PC games. WASD is fine the way it is.

NOPE :3 I find the WASD controls to be perfectly fine and I am glad that it is standardized. To playing a number of pre-WASD games and see how much fun you have with figuring out what kind of convoluted and insane control scheme the wild savages who programmed it went for.

WASD works well,
It's common for most games,
and has QEZXCRFVG and T in good reaching distance for easy use,
south paws have the Num pad that can be customized very closely to it,
So the best way to put it is, it's not broken so don't try to fix it, so saying that you want to have something better than WASD is like saying having a fixed camera and using the right analog stick for combat is a really good thing.

That's just my 2 cents

what about how you use q, e, 1-9, z, x, c, f, r, L-shift, L-ctrl, Caps Lock, Space, ` and Tab in most games as well. wasd is centered with these keys around it, at least as much as it could be.
