Why is it that it's more acceptable for public displays of male semi-nudity (i.e. topless) than for females? You see it everywhere: ads for fragrances, at the beach, on a hot day, on TV, in movies, etc. Men can just walk around with their t-shirts off, bare chested, and nobody cares; if a woman did the same, parents would be averting their children's eyes, media companies would be barraged with complaints and she'd be made to put clothes on or, laws permitting, even arrested (Can the police do that? It sounds plausible.).

Obviously, there are plenty of nude woman in more adult films and on Page 3 of the Sun, but male toplessness is a lot more common and a lot less frowned upon - why is that? When it comes to below-the-belt nudity, it's a different story; fully naked males and females are both a bit "taboo", if you know what I mean. What's so different about the other half?

EDIT: Another point I'd like to make - if you see topless women in magazines (like candid celebrity photos or whatever), only the nipples will be censored, usually with little stars. Men have nipples too, right? So it's obviously not the fleshy, breast tissue that's the "problem", it's the nipples - this makes less sense because the breast tissue is the only thing different between men's and women's chests (please correct me if I'm wrong).

Second EDIT: This thread is OLD - STOP POSTING IN IT! Every point has been made already. Unless you have actually have something new to contribute that hasn't already been said, please don't.

Sorry to go a bit off topic, but I live in an area where women are legally allowed to go top-"free" should they choose to. It's actually a pretty sexist notion to allow men to go without tops but not allow women to do so, so the laws were changed. Funnily enough, when I see a women going topless, I notice it's only other women who get annoyed or angry with her. Doesn't happen too often though, other than March Break.

Completely for reasons relating to gender equality of course. ;)

Because for females, boobs are considered a part of sexuality, for guys the pecks aren't. Is it really that hard to understand? I'm not saying that it's right, if women want to run around topless, I'm all for it, but is it really that confusing?

What's so "awful and needs to be covered up" about boobs, eh?
Nothing in my opinion, but there's very little about a mans chest that has the same... I don't know, sexual imagery that breasts do. Even though I'm personally very liberal about this stuff, but I can definitely see why the rules are different for the genders.

Because men find breasts to be sexually stimulating? Although to my knowledge most heterosexual women find hot shirtless men to be sexually stimulating as well. So hooray for double standards I guess?

It's an annoyance i'd rather we do away with. Most women will still cover their breasts in public anyways, if only to keep them from getting in the way.

Look if women walked around topless then; A. I wouldn't get anything done, and B. By the time they were in their 20's their boobs would have the age of a 60 year old. I think ya know what I mean.

I agree, we should see more topless women in the media.
Of course a woman's breasts have a more sexual aspect than a man's bare chest and going topless is considered a form of nudity, which is taboo in some cultures.

Guys don't lactate and male breasts are less developed. They are a secondary sex characteristic for women which makes them off limits for more "sex is taboo" cultures.

a) It's because the male chest (and nipples) do not play a sexual role, and are thus not considered erotic. (What BabySinclair said)

b) It's a social/cultural/historical/religious thing with lots of baggage.

c) Boobs are cool. Girls have boobs. I like girls.

It's a strange double standard, but considering how uncomfortable trying to move at a respectable speed without any chestal-support can be, once the shock factor wore off I don't think a change in the rules would make a massive change in the result. It would make beach flirting a fair bit more interesting, though.

Of course, as a heterosexual female, I'm actually totally cool with the current system.

I think male nudity should be outlawed, while female nudity is keenly encouraged.
You may call that a double standard, I call it beauty.

Oh you.

OT: Honestly I take issuance with anyone not fully clothed who isn't at a beach. Men shirtless are as jarring to me as women shirtless, though as long as they are pleasant on the eyes I will forgive them. In my experience though, I've never forgiven shirtlessness...
