Hi, fellow Escapists. My friends and I were in the middle of a heated and rather spiritedly debated conversation when I decided to let you guys in on it to determine the winner. Which current gen game would make the best movie?

My vote: Fallout. I think if done properly, this could be THE new post-apocalyptic movie. A modern The Road Warrior, if you will, of course, citing it's influence.

My friend Scott: Gears of War. He believes that is the games were done as a complete narrative on film, it would be sci-fi of epic proportions.

My friend Sean: Portal. He sees it as more a psycological thriller, with only two real characters, one torturing the other througout the maze, etc. This would be my second choice.

But anyway, a steak dinner and a case of beer rest on this result. You have 24 hours. Get's to voting!

For bonus funsies, pick the actors who would star in your choice. For Fallout, for me, I'd like to see Mel give a cameo as the original Fallout protagonist, with Russel Crowe as the Vault Dweller and maybe Scarlett Johansson as Miora, ^_^

A funny thing. Gears of War is all the more likely one, but I think Fallout would be better. That is, after Interplay and Bethesda have another fight over who owns it.

Gears of War. Because it looks like a movie, and it would be a pretty good movie. Lots of action at the very least.

Fallout would make a good psychological thriller or a horror movie. Action, not so much.

Portal wouldn't really work as a movie. Simply put, there's not enough characterization or overall plot to make a satisfying movie, even if it's one of the best games ever made. I just can't see the transition going well.

Gears of War would make a decent action flick, but that's about it. No matter the quality of the final product (and it probably would be fairly good), I would hesitate to call it a "good movie", if only because it's completely brainless. The plot is fairly standard Hollywood fare, so it would transition fairly well to a movie, but it would lack the heart and soul that makes truly good movies as excellent as they are.

Of the three, Fallout would almost certainly make the best movie. It depends on the director/writer though. The problem with making a Fallout movie is that the plot of the game is so openended that there's really very little that can be transcribed. The creative forces behind the movie would have to be fairly skilled at creating a cohesive narrative, but if they manage it it would easily be the best movie of the lot.

My vote goes to Fallout, so long as Obsidian has something to say about it. Besides, I'm looking forward to some of that old fashioned morbid humor.

Besides, in the movie Fallout you follow around in first person and you've found yourself having your tongue cut off. You can't speak and you're running around to survive. That'd definitely be an awesome thing to see. Might get boring, but come on... you're getting dragged along as you witness everything around you with no say whatsoever.

...you get stabbed through the chest by a radscorpion. Right after everything goes to hell, of course.

The book of Eli was very similar to fallout especially in terms of environment, however it was pretty crap from what I've heard.

A Gears film would be pretty cool, would probably be rubbish though

Now a Portal film, that would be awesome if done well but again I don't trust Hollywood

All of these choices are horrible, but Portal would be the worse. Imagine what they'd do to the likable and anonymous Chell. They'd give her a massive pair of tits, make her seductive and ruin her as a relatable protagonist.
My exact thoughts *shudder*

None of them. Games shouldn't be turned into movies, movies shouldn't be turned into games. It's a huge problem of media; one doesn't accomplish things in the same way as the other, and you won't get the same satisfaction watching the Gears of War movie as you will playing the game. Simply put: game mechanics translate really poorly to something that's not interactive and make for awful plot devices.

If you want a movie along the lines of portal, Pull up Netflix and watch Cube 2: Hypercube. It's nothing like Portal, but that's as close as you're going to get. Or... hey, I have an idea. Just play Portal. Nothing provides the Portal experience like actually playing Portal.

If you want a movie along the lines of Fallout, damned if I know what you oughta' watch, but I cringe to think of the ridiculous amount of CGI they'd use to make it. It'd look like a giant FMV game.

If you want a movie along the lines of Gears of War, watch some actual war flicks, like Kelly's Heroes, The Dirty Dozen, or Where Eagles Dare. They aren't getting swarmed by bug-dudes, but they're a lot more interesting, and if you're really that hung up on what they're shooting at just pick up Aliens or Terminator: Salvation or something.

Gears of War could be a good summer blockbuster - as long as Uwe Boll is nowhere in sight - and I can see the potential for Fallout 3 but I don't know what I'd do with it.

Portal needs to remain a game, and only a game.

Yeah, yeah, video game movies suck, we know. I'm just looking for which would be the best out of these to settle a bet.

If Portal could be done right, I think it wouldn't be too bad. the only problem is it being done well, which is very unlikely. Fallout would be easier to translate to the silver screen I think.

Gears of War definitely. It's a linear game with a clear story narrative and a lot of action. Portal could be interesting but it would have to deviate massively from the game to keep it from getting stale. Fallout 3 would never work as a movie. There's so much in that game that to make it into a movie would require so many things cut that it wouldn't have nearly the same vast open feel as the game. Plus there are a lot of points in the plot that depend on choice, so linearizing the story as a movie would be a task in itself that might not yield good results.

That depends on what you mean by the word "Best". If you're talking actual quality, then Fallout would win hands-down. However, if you mean sales, then Gears of War would win because the plot is already for stupid people. It's basically "Super soldiers go here and shoot aliens." As for Portal, there's just not a real story there for it to hold up a movie. Ya, it'd be an interesting movie if it were made, but it wouldn't have any sort of overarching story.

P.S. I understand that there's more to the story of GOW, but that's the shorthand version that most people will understand and remember five years from when they say the movie.

Fallout 3 or Gears of War. Fallout would be a greatly deep and well done world whereas Gears could just be one hell of a summer blockbuster, either way there's enough going on in both to make them ideal choices for movies and since Fallout was more about the world than the story itself I'd probably say Gears.

I love Portal but if you actually made a movie of it, it would consist of a woman in a labratory running around shooting at the walls and would get boring to watch very quick.

Everyone seems to think Portal wouldn't be a great movie, but I actually see some potential for it. It would be artsy, and about isolation, with lots of great camera work and angles and effects to carry the experience, all with a devious A.I. playing on the psyche.

As long as Chell is mute. It'd keep them from effing her up, and it'd give the viewer a simalcrum from which to view the events transpiring.

No, it wouldn't be commercially successful, but I think it'd be a more involved and thought-provoking movie than GoW.

Fallout still has #1 in my heart though. Just needed to show Portal some love. ^_^

Fallout 3 would be best and could make a lot of opportunities for different storylines and varied characters,
portal would be good as a thriller but could get repetitive, i mean theres a reason the game is only 3 hours long
Gears of war is a pretty generic dry piece of boring toast of a game and wouldnt present anything new in filmaking that everyone hasnt already seen
