It doesn't work on me. Because homosexuality isn't prevalent in main stream media. Except in shows such as Will and Grace... and that's really the only example I know of. D< Do you know how annoying it is having some woman with massive tits pop up on screen every time I try to watch TV? DX I usually flip channels because it's horrendously obnoxious.
If Ian McKellen was naked and eating cheeseburger on TV, would you buy it?
I don't know who that is. Is he attractive? But... it might get my attention and get me to watch the commercial... But it wouldn't make me hungry for a cheeseburger. <_< I'm just a pervy bastard. XD
Ian is Gandalf from the LOTRO films!

What about Lance Bass?
Oh... He's a little TOO old for my tastes. XD And Lance Bass? Hell no. Do I have to find where you live and give you a smack upside the head? DX Blech... I said I'm pervy, not that I don't have taste. XD

I won't buy a Shakira album just because she is a goddess. If that's what you mean. At the same time if she was to be in Playboy, a magazine I've literally never bought, I would pick up a copy.

So I guess it's a yes and a no for me? Depends on the product really.

Where's the "It's never did and I find it offensive that they think I'm that stupid" option?
It has nothing to do with stupidity. If you're past puberty (I suppose you are) I extremely doubt that sex never did sell to you.
Does it take logic of anything higher than a 6 year old to realize "hey if I buy that, this person in this commercial who looks sort of pretty will still never care about me?"
Of course not. As it has been stated before, this is not what sex in commercials is about. It is a whole lot more subtle. Unfortunately, I'm no expert and cannot provide you with facts but I know so much as studying marketing in college also involves some psychology. It's about the subconcious, and, I love to repeat myself on that, has nothing to do with intelligence.

Not to try and derail the thread, but what is tasteful for homosexual men these days?

Hard to answer really. My tastes likely differ greatly from most other gay men's. Though anyone scrawny enough to be snapped in two by a firm hug is definitely not my taste. I'm draggin' this thread off topic so I'll try to go back. xD

OT: If the product that is being sold is porny (those silly girls gone wild vids they advertise on Spike) then obviously a bit of T&A would likely have an influence. Also... shampoo commercials are soft core porn.

Well if I'm gonna stare at the ass end of a character for 10-30 hours of gameplay, it may as well be a hawt chick.

It doesn't sell to me at all, but I like looking at beuatiful women, so I'll appreciate the add while it is there, and move along to what I actually want to see or do, so it is hardly a problem for me. They won't see any business from be because of it, but they are welcome to advertise to my more primal side.

What does work is products that are marketed in awesome ways, like Brawndo, if you haven't seen their commercials, you should. I'm not trying to get you to buy Brawndo though, it is definitely an acquired taste, and expensive as hell, but they commercials are entertaining. They are on http://brawndo.com/.
I am still entertained by them even after seeing them now and again for years.

I don't really care to be honest. If there's a show advertised by 'ooooh, boobies' and another that isn't, then I'll still watch whichever has better characters, better story and generally is more interesting to me. I'd probably choose to watch Top Gear or How It's Made on the Discovery Channel rather than Britain's Next Top Model even if the BNTM adverts were full of girls in skimpy clothes. Which they usually are. On Living TV, at least.

By the way, have any other UK Escapists noticed the irony of that channel being called 'Living' TV when half it's shows are about ghosts and the paranormal?

When you can get free porn at the click of a button, sex in advertisement loses its impact.
So, no, sex no longer sells. Unless you live in a small village without internet, I guess.

Exactly.
It'll always be here, because there will always be people who can't think of anything else, but I'm done with it.
Beautiful women don't make me do things.

Completely dependant on the product or thing in question. If it's like an OK TV show that's presented by a hot, barely clothed women, of course I'm going to at least check it out, but selling things like vegetables or wallpaper is just a total waste of time. If I've gotta pay for something it'll be for the product not the juggs in the add I guess.

Sex only sells because people buy. Not all people, thankfully. But lots of people, form all walks of life and varying degrees of intelligence and power.

To be honest, if I see something (like a game; take, say, X-Blades) that feels the need to advertise itself with inordinate amounts of T&A, I'm going to assume it sucks. The game might well be alright, but if the developers think they need to sell it using the hotness of the main character, this doesn't really give an impression of confidence in the game's quality. Also, I'd feel bloody awkward if I actually went and bought X-Blades in a store.

I still buy Lynx, but I hate the adverts. Then again, I hate 98% of adverts. Bleh.

So... I guess not. Oh well.

I do enjoy seeing a spot with a nice looking girl. I will NOT however, buy the product because of it, so no. Sex doesn't sell for me. It's more like, "Thanks for the boobies Pepsi, but now I'm going to go buy some Coca Cola."

It's attention grabbing, mainly. I live in Brisbane and every time I walk past a Guess-brand shop now, I can't help but notice the enormous posters they've put up, featuring some sweaty, semi-naked model and her boobs (parading various handbags for some reason). It's not a particularly effective sales tactic; mainly because it makes you feel like a pervert every time you walk by, but it sure as hell draws the eye.

It must be more effective than I assume, though, because these days it seems every second shop in Queen Street Mall is wallpapered with photoshopped women. It's the same basic principle for movie posters, game boxes, novel covers, shop catalogues... pretty much everything, really. It makes you look, and sticks in your memory.

sex is used by crappy commercials/games/movies/tv shows to get ratings/buyers.

that is all
