I was raised by my parents to be a gentleman(Opening doors, Helping whenever possible, etc.), a rare thing nowadays. I have been told that I was being sexist because I refuse to hit a girl. It's not like i don't view them as equals or anything, I very much respect them. What do you think?

No, being a gentleman is not sexist, it is polite. The difference between politeness and sexism is the difference between being gracious and being a jerkwad.

The origins of gentleness could have arisen from sexism (for example, a woman can't defend herself against a man: don't hit women) but they're practiced out of kindness.

Shivelry isn't dead, it's just resting. Be nice to ladies and they will be nice to you. It's all about the mutual respect

I find it hard to even pretend hit girls. Now I have a friend who is very tomboyish who I hit but it took me a while for me to be comfortable. I just dont feel its right to honestly hit a girl.

I find that whole girls want to be treated equal, yet better thing. If I'm treating a girl equally I'm not going to be chivalrous because I wouldn't do that to a guy. But then that's probably what those womens lib activists mean by equal, better.

People actually give you trouble for being a gentleman now? That's ridiculous. And what kind of animal does one have to be to hit a woman?

I've also found myself asking this question, it's second nature for me to take a girl's coat etc. But isn't that sort of sexist? It's not like they're incapable of hanging up their own coats.

If you hold a door for a woman the you are only going to be told off by someone who is a complete b****.

If you let the door swing and hit her in the face then you get told off for being an ass.

It doesn't really matter what you do; for being a man, someone will say you're wrong.

Feminism is a terrible thing.

I was surprised at first, I am just so used to it. I play tennis, obviously, and the unwritten rule is to never hit a girl with the ball.

Its just being polite, but if you are doingit because you don't think women can, thats being sexist.

But again if your just doing it to be polite, then it is not sextist.

Agreed, being a gentlemen means being a good person in general, not just to women.

Sort of, it depends. For instance, do you hold the door for everyone? Or just girls? I wouldn't say the latter is sexist, but I could see it being seen that way.

Would you hold the door open for a man? pull his seat out and then push it in for him? open a car door for him? it is sexist

I tend to go the gentlemanly route. and to be honest, it is a tad sexist. but it can from man being strong and protective, not women are inferior and need everything done for them. But if a girl starts swinging at me, i will either let her hit me and get it over with, dodge it, or if she persists, grab her arm and put her in an armbar or wristlock. nothing to bad just something enough to say stop. if she is threatening my life, i will not only hit her, i will do it until she stops threatening my life.

I hold doors for people all the time regardless of age or gender.

Even if it was sexist, who cares? It's not like the men do it because they think women are incapable of doing it themselves. They do it because it's polite.
