I'm so glad I'm not the only one that wonders about her. I thought it was just me...

ok, does she actually have a penis?
OT: i don't think its fair that she should not compete because she's actually good at her sport but its not fair on the women she's put against either...

*shrugs* No idea, celebrities don't really interest me. I just remember reading in a newspaper that there was speculation about it.

The International Association of Athletics Federations, which ordered the testing, refused to confirm or deny the reports in the Sydney Daily Telegraph and the Sydney Morning Herald that Semenya is a hermaphrodite with no ovaries and internal testes that produce large amounts of testosterone.

The IAAF said it is reviewing the test results on the 18-year-old runner and will not issue a final decision until November.
So it is not final, but damn he/she/it looks like a man.

She looks slightly less manly there, the jaw looks more manly than anything else... then again, there are plenty of women who have a manly jaw.

It was just found out that South African runner Caster Semenya is a hermaphrodite. She has both ovaries and testes. So do you think she should be allow compete and if so with whom.
Your poll doesn't have enough answers. I picked the 'whomever' option because there were none else. Honestly, it's something that they would have to assess. Depending on which her body is structured like, or what she wants to be known as, they will make their choice from thus.

i'd say go with the genetic definition of a woman, i.e. two X chroms.
If he/she has a Y chrom, he's genetically a man and not allowed to compete in an all-woman contest.
It's a lot of controversy, but he/she'll always be something between a man and a woman, this is strictly about wether or not he/she's allowed to compete.
there's a genetic disorder which completely deactivates the Y chromosome, causing the embryo to develop as a perfectly normal female. short of genetic testing, they're completely indistinguishable from XX women.

Boys before puberty are regarded as male so the runner should be as well. He even sits down like a man!
that's wonderfully irrelevant, thank you. but since people have told me i sit like a girl, i guess i'll just shave and go see if i can set some world records!

Call me old fashioned, but if you've got balls, you're not a woman. Period.

Maybe it should compete with hermaprodites.
'It'? Now your just being an dupek, Polish.
Sry, I didn't want to be mean. "That person" is the phrase I was looking for.
That's quite alright.

Look, the rest of you - please refer to her, as 'she'. She has been raised and brought to believe she is female, she has assumed a female identity, and, for all intents and purposes, she is an infertile female with abnormally high levels of testosterone. Calling her 'it' is just a peculiarly specious form of asshattery, one on the same level as the Westborough Baptist Church and the BNP.

That's right. The next person to refer to this woman as 'it' is that kind of asshole*.

*Unless the reference is accidental, like Kukul's, in which case, a simple mistake of language.

Having AIS typically means that you're a male and have (undescended) testes, but you have a vagina, because that's the default pathway of development for the tissue that in males normally becomes the penis.

So while you do have a mixture of sex organs, you don't have both testes and ovaries and you don't have both a penis and a vagina.

Of course there are plenty of intersex disorders/conditions, so maybe people exist who do have both... certainly there are people with XYY and XXY and other multiple sex chromosome combinations.
