Save points can be incredibly irritating, especially when annoyingly spaced out (looking at you, Killer7) so yes, quick saving should always be an option, even if you decide not to use it.
Damn Phazon Mines in Metroid Prime too....

I myself don't use quicksave too often, so I really don't have an opinion.

Yeah, that game could be pretty sadistic with the save points. It was amazing when you managaed to limp into one with a quarter of an energy tank left, though, although the countless other times when you died just outside the door hardly made up for it...

IM playing through SO 4 atm and although its an amazing game i dont really feel im playing it, merely hoping between save points, which really detracts from the gameplay

Let's say you're doing least portals in chamber 13 on Portal. And you want to go for gold which is 4 portals. You and the cube from the first room are on the top button of the second room after you've used 3 portals. Now to get the cube to the other button you have to throw it. Throwing is pretty difficulty to do on tiny platforms. Now if you were to not quick save and fail, you would have to get that set up all over again until you get it right. This could take forever.

It's pretty much a matter of taste. Would you like to keep doing 5+ minutes to get to where you were, or load right in the middle of the action?

In fallout 3 I never failed a speech check because of quick save, it kind of broke the game.

Yes, yes, oh God yes.

Sure, all the self-labelled "hardcore" gamers can boast about how they beat a game without using it, but me? I like it to at least be there so if I'm really stuck I can take a battle in stages instead of either trying to do it in a oner or risking perma-saving in the house of inevitable death.

huh..... THAT IS TOO BIG OF A QUESTION!!!!

I mean, it depends on the game. A game like pokemon needs quick save, but beat 'em ups would be WAY less challenging with quick save, as you could quick save before you get killed/into a fight.

How does having a quicksave option ruin a game for you? I dislike the autosave feature because it just saves whenever the game feels like and can ruin some experience by walking over some invisible line that triggers a cutscene and then warps you to an area you didn't want ot be in since you weren't done exploring. And you can't reload because the game saved Hating on an optional saving thing that is as I stated optional (meaning you don't have to use it if you don't want to) deserves more of an explanation.

Frankly I love a quick save option. Nothing worse than losing an hour of progress in a game because your real life requires your attention and you don't want to risk your console going up in flames while being paused for hours. Although I don't think every game needs one and it should put you in the exact position you were before you saved (so none of this quicksave to refill your health shenanigans).

Quicksaves are just logical.
Though they can be exploited sometimes, I feel that the pros outweigh the cons - tenfold.

Yep this is why.

Nothing worse than having your mates rock up and ready to leave while you're mid-level in a game and have to reach the next checkpoint to save your progress.
Frustrating and illogical in my opinion.

ALL HAIL THE QUICKSAVE!

Ultimatly depends on the game. Being able to abuse a "quicksave/save anywhere" style saving system in Neverwinter Nights takes away any of the thought in your decisions in the game, if you annoyed the hell out of an NPC, you just reload and try again.

I think if there was a difficulty slider that was points based for such a system it could work well. Saving could maybe lower your current score by a set amount or percentage, encouraging you to not use it unless you really need to. Or by cranking the difficulty up further and having just a few set autosaves in a level. Or having a guy with only autosaves, and each tougher difficulty removes more and more autosave points in each level.

There's many solutions and possibilities but it probably depends on the specific game.

I've been playing Farcry 2 and the lack of quick save is annoying, as I drive for 20 minutes and scout a few guard outposts and then some random guy kills me, and I have to do it all again.

Does anyone else think games should have quick save, or be like Mass Effect where you can quick save only out of combat?
Farcry 2 does have quicksave. Wait, what are you playing it on? If it's on PC just press F5.

It's really easy to enable quicksaving in Farcry, just do a google search on it.

Yes yes yes yes yes. In Call of Duty, just hit F5 every couple of minutes and you wouldn't have to worry about a thing. One saving system that shouldn't exist is the one where you have to find a save spot like the typewriter from RE4 to save. If I want to stop playing, I should be able to. I do not want to walk around for another 15 minutes trying to find a box with a camera drawn on it. If you do this, at least make them extremely frequent.

Quicksave has saved many a rage fit for me.

Its a nice feature to have in any game you play.

Correction you abusing the system kinda broke the game. If the game autosaved before every speech challenge then you could blame the game.

Whoa. This topic contrasts so nicely with the permanent character death thread just next door. But I have to say, I hate quicksave and am suprised to be so overwhelmingly outnumered.

So what if it's optional? I don't want to have to inflict a self imposed challenge to be challenged by the game. Immersion is at its stongest when making a mistake has a penalty. In Halo 2 You will find yourself cautiously rounding a corner searching for sniper jackels, In Meagaman when you reach the boss you will be sweating and praying to not make a mistake.

Probably my best moments in gaming were tackling the Dante Must Die! SS challenges. You can't be slow, you have to earn a ton of points and you can never ever allow yourself the tiniest injury. The slightest failure causing a restart is what made the game frustrating and extremely gratifying.

A lack of quick save only gives you a chance to know the game better. In Super C I know every enemy position, the location of every power up and the layout of every level. How many games with infinite save slots can you say the same for?

I was being sarcastic. But on the internet you have to say you're being sarcastic, otherwise people won't understand it.

Since, you know, this question is pointless. If you don't want to use quick save (whatever reason there could be), you just dont use it. It doesn't mean a game should not have it. This entire thred is pointless.
