Yes, they should. There ARE parents out there that don't let their kids play gory and violent games. If you were one of those parents, how would you feel if you rented a game called Diddy Kong Gardening and found out you weren't planting, but tearing each other limb from limb in a backyard?
If you were, say, a responsible parent, you'd look up the videogame online before handing it to your kids.

I don't think that there should be any rating system whatsoever, and force people to read reviews, thus making people more educated buyers... but that's just me, and I'll probably never hold high government office anyway.

I thought Halo's rated T.

It has like no blood/gibs, you blow someone up and their body just flies around.

I know it's rated M but it should be rated T, seriously.

Gore should never get a game rated M unless it's something that would actually disturb people with how gory it is (prototype, RotT, etc.)

I think that it should be rated M because it really can confuse impressional people. In games, gore is usually portrayed as ok, if not good. To explain:

Real life: That guy just got his throat slit! Call an ambulance!

Games: That guy just got his throat slit! Look at the blood fountain!

Ok, maybe it's exagerated, but when was the last time you played a game where people flipped out when their buddy got shot in the head?

Depends. Movies get away with lots of the shit video games cant, and can present it even more realistically. Maybe this point about it being "morally acceptable" is moot. I think its just a matter of time until it becomes "financially acceptable" to be as lenient on games as they are on films.

The amount of disturbing imagery that is occasionally allowed to get into films given a 12a rating is insane.

Besides, I was watching Predator and Terminator (take that you twat Schwarzenegger) way before I was playing violent video games in the 90s. If the "protect our precious darlings" attitude is to be taken, its got to be done equally, otherwise its just fucking hypocrisy.

To be honest, it all really depends on how gory and violent a game is. If you shoot a guy in the head and it zooms in and shows you a video that makes you grandmother cry it deserves M. If a body bleeds after you shoot it, then it doesn't, that's just gritty realism. maybe pg13.

I think so. It should be up to the parents to decide waht games their child's gonna play.

So maybe, all games should be M rated.....

Yes, blood and gore should be treated as a mature subject. It disturbs people because of survival instinct, take away that and a person's mind can become warped.

I have no problem with rating systems but outright banning of anything is insane.

Extreme gore and violence should be given a mature rating if we are going to bother to have a rating system. I don't think violence in video games does any damage at all to children but I also have no idea how I would have reacted to blowing someone's legs off when I was 8.

Without question, violence and gore deserve the big fat "M" so kids can't get ahold of it and go kill-crazy.

NO...there is no point...definitely, making something "BAD" makes kids want to watch it to see why it's so bad...i mean i'm pretty much certain that i wanted to watch R rated movies just for that reason...

Also, no matter what idiotic adults say, video games do not warp kids to the point of running around murdering people! seriously that's so stupid....

"UH..sir why did you kill that man"

"Cause it looked cool in Grand Theft Auto..."

does that ever happen? seriously? wtf i think ratings are useless...

I think it prepares people for real life.
accidents happen. people get hit by cars. people get shot.
The government can can't censore real life, so what's to bother with games?
I mean, sure, don't go showing horror movies to little children, and teach them 68 ways to kill unarmed, but surely if they're teens they've seen something along those lines anyway.
so not little children.
which means that I agree with age ratings by warping my own arguement against me...
Also, I don't know what kind of life all of you people live but my doesn't include blowing people up, shooting limbs off, watching skulls explode, or knifing random people on the street. Extreme blood and violence just isn't a part of my daily routine.

I did, however, play Team Fortress with the gib count setting at max. Every time you killed someone 100 times as many body parts would stream out of their body so it looked like they have 20 lungs, 40 legs, and a few dozen skulls plus enough blood to fill an olympic swimming pool.

That's a terrible idea, because parents will never take enough time to look up games, so either they will allow all, or none.

i think they should. take manhunt for example. children shouldn't play it, it's far too violent for anyone younger to play.

depends. there are games that show little or no blood except for special events, see assassin's creed or COD 4. then you have God of War 3 in which you rip off a guys head, or anything in Gears of War. this could go hand in hand with the forum that is discussing whether or not there should be a rating in between T and M

Depends on the circumstances of the violence. Shooty fun, no. Goring people realistically with screw drivers as in Manhunt- yes
