Little Big Planet. Ends all arguments.
An unproven game that very likely does not have universal appeal? I'm looking forward to it myself, but I don't think it ends anything.

I'm a gamer and a videophile. PS3 was a no-brainer for me.

And (as it was said) Blu-ray is only worth it if you have an HD set. If not, no point.

However, PS3 ALSO has VERY slick design, both GUI, aesthetically, AND under the hood. If you're a tech junkie you could do a lot worse than a PS3.

time to to counter your counter-points! wheeeee

1)*sigh* I hate the constant fanboy argument that "your console is just pressing dumb buttons" Every video game involves some mundane finger motion, IT'S NOT A VALID POINT!If Pc gaming is just sitting at a desk typing then console gaming is just sitting on a couch swiveling analog sticks.

2) If your a smart shopper and aren't looking to buy an alienware, you can get a nice gaming PC for the same, or less then a console.(I did)

3) this point is sleightly valid, yes most current gen PC games will not work on your average PC, but as I said above it's not that hard or expensive to get a nice gaming rig
if you look around a little.( and while an average PC will look crappier then a ps3, a nice gaming rig can look loads better)

4) Another childish argument,"your console is so nerdy", save it for recess buddy.
OK I'll counter your counters to my counter-points... (this could go on for a long time and become confusing)

1- ''If Pc gaming is just sitting at a desk typing then console gaming is just sitting on a couch swiveling analog sticks.'' Very true but everyone knows couch beats desk.

2- My 360 cost me £150, can you get a good gaming PC for less than that?

3- Again, £150 or less? I don't think so.

4- Childish? yes, but it's true.

Yes I have a 360 but I'm not a MS fanboy, I will be getting a PS3 when I can afford it, my original choice of console was only because the 360 came out first.

well the PS3 does look temping to get but it would be like 'eaten alive by wolves than to buy a PS3' dont get me wrong it is a waste of time, the 360 is my fav when it came out and it is still now people who have PS3 are wasting their lives i think, but then again the PC is good you can upgrade parts well which is a PAIN but it is worth it.

...No universal appeal? Dang, I guess Mario caters to a niche market aswell. I also haven't seen a single negative preview for it, with sites such as IGN declaring it a shoo in as an AAA title, so it's 'unproven' in the same way as Gears 2: very very likely to be amazing, but - as with everything - there's a chance it could suck, but it's a small one.

This is really ultimately your decision - only you know what you want from a console. While LBP certainly looks good, is it worth buying an expensive console for?
Except for Warhawk and MGS 4 the PS3 offers very little in terms of top quality games. The lack of backwards compatibility is also a kick in the teeth. I don't own one myself however I do get to play them quite regularly at friends', and out of the 2 people I know two people who own a PS3, one loves it totally while the other hates it and sees it as a waste of money.
So, in terms of an actual games console, the PS3 has yet to justify its' hefty price tag, however as a blu-ray player its' very good value and possibly worth getting for that. However, since Blu-rays are quickly dropping in price soon this factor of the PS3 will be rendered obsolete, and since the games aren't up to scratch i'll say no.

...and Uncharted, Ratchet and Clank, Resistance: Fall of Man, Motorstorm... I could go on. The idea of the PS3 having no games is a myth.

It all depends on what you're looking for in a console. If it's going to be in the main lounge room where everyone is going to play it, I'd consider it. But only if you're willing to fork out the money for all the HD cables and the money for Blu-Ray movies, otherwise just stick to your xbox and be happy with what you've got.

I think its a matter of opinion and taste. PS3 games are more Mind games, while most 360 games are "shoot everything and then check if everything is dead. if anything survived, shoot it again". theyre both great consoles. the PSN is free, but Live is much better. Yet, live as ALLOT of douchebags, while PSN as nice and collaborating people (not that it doesnt have assholes in its mist, and not that Live asnt got friendly people). I have a PS3 and it runs games and works fine. So yeah, you can buy it, if my words convinced you.
Hope it helped.

I'll weigh in on this one, as I just picked up a PS3 to complement the 360 and the Wii, which is covered in dust. I'll be honest here: if you own one of the two real consoles, I cannot understand why you would splash out on the other just for the games. There's a few exclusives on each one that are truly great, but the majority of games are multi platform, making the line ups nearly identical. One might run a little better on the other or vice versa, but in terms of the games, they're nearly the same.
So you have to look at the other features of the console, see if they add value for you. For me the great strength of the 360 is live, which is huge if you play a lot of online multiplayer but I've found isn't hugely superior to PSN, but then I don't play a lot of online multiplayer. Plus, of course, it costs money. The video rentals, I don't use as they're quite costly and my hard disk, due to microsofts intrasigence with their data cable, remains a tiny 20GB.
The PS3's big draw, and the reason I bought it, is that it's a blu-ray player, and a damn good one, especially as it regularly updates itself as new BD profiles come out. But blu rays are of course expensive, and you won't see the difference without an HDMI cable and a good HDTV if you already have an upscaling DVD player. Oh, and the XMB is superior to the blades in every way, I've found. I hope that Microsoft copies that entirely for the fall update, rather than just Miis.
So, to summarise this rambling little post, don't bother for the games. Do it for the blu ray, and if that doesn't appeal to you, don't bother.

If the PsN has better people on average (I've finally met the douchebags - they were on COD4 and they sounded just horrible. I couldn't run forever I guess) why do you say Live is better?

Truth is, I have also only found douche-bags in CoD4. No one bothers to talk in Halo 3, only mature people play Vegas and everyone is afraid of the Banhammer in Gears of War so they shut up.

It's the games that bring out the idiots, not the service.

Anyway, the way I decide if I want a console is if the price of all the games I want is equal to the price of the console. For example, if the PS3 costs $600 then you want ten games at $60 dollars each. If you only want 5 games then you have to ask yourself if you are willing to pay $120 dollars* for those five games.

*God I hate Australian Prices.
