Well....

1) It's big. Don't tell me, "It's not much bigger than the DS Lite", as the DS Lite is a compact brick and the PSP suffers from being very delicate and having an exposed screen when you want to carry it around in your pocket. It's like carrying a Nutty Buddy in your pocket.

2) The PSP's support is horrendous. If you want to actually play the games on the PSP, you'll have to put up with the fact that Sony likes forcing update patches from their software to reset any and all mods on it. I'm sure there are ways around it, but I'm not savvy enough to know exactly where to find crap like that or trust myself enough to fix things.

3) The PSP bears some unnatural quality that makes me dislike holding it. I don't know if it's some kind of ergonomic issue, but the playing the PSP feels like trying to get romantic with a woman who had a baby 37 minutes ago.

I'd say that you should buy a PSP if you have the money, as there are enough enjoyable games to make it worthwhile.

1. Tekken: Dark Resurrection
2. Wipeout (Pulse or Pure)
3. Patapon
4. Syphon Filter (Dark Mirror or Logan's Shadow)
5. FF Tactics: War of the Lions
6. God of War: Chains of Olympus
7. N+
8. Crisis Core: FF7
9. Daxter
10. Midnight Club (3 or LA)
11. Burnout

There are only a handful of really worthwhile games for the PSP. Most of the titles I've played have been disappointing. Retro remakes for psp are usually pretty good, and there are a few games I would consider "must have..." but those are retro remakes.

Saying "I'm right and there's nothing you can say to prove me wrong" is not a good base for a debate. I own a PSP and a DS, and while playing the handhelds, which, mind you, is what they're made for, the DS is much larger and more uncomfortable with the whole "hanging screen" thing, while the PSP is easy to use and much more comfortable. The PSP is maybe an inch wider, but the DS is so long, since it has to handle two screens. The PSP screen is delicate? Don't know where you heard that from; unless you like sticking knives into your systems or have a fetish with giving the hammer a go on a fresh box, it shouldn't be a problem. This is just a cheap thing for "abusive" (if you want me to make it sound like I'm Dr. Phil) gamers to complain about. It's called responsibility.

As for carrying it around in your pocket, uhhh...DS folded is still taller than the PSP.

If your interested in RPGs (sorry, not sure if you stated yes or no, don't feel like reading through the entire thread) but Disgaea is a MUST HAVE for PSP.
SEriously, I have fucking 200 hours into that game, and i've barely scratched the surface!

btw, I have to wait an hour or two after work nearly everyday to get a ride home, so theres definately a reason why I got so many hours into the game.

(And if you ask, why don't I just drive home? Well, thats $400 I odn't have to spend on car payment/insurance, nor $50 every month on gas that goes to video games. Oh yeaaa.) :p

Now if only I were in new york where the public transportation systme actually rocks...

Okay so you don't want racing or turn based games. To me that leaves us with Patapon, Tekken: Dark Resurrection, Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops...

Anyways, the primary reason I own a PSP is so I can play with emulators. It's a fantastic mobile platform for emulating classic games. It can handle a lot of PS1 games. A large portion of PSPs out there have problems with the joystick.

If I was to choose between the 2000 or 3000 I'd go for the 2000. Let's compare the two.

PSP 2000 Pros/Cons

Pros:

-Can have custom firmware installed onto it provided you know how.
-3 to 4 hour battery life, this is of continuous movie playback or gaming.
-Custom firmware means you can play NES, SNES, GBA, PS1, and standard PSP games.

Cons:

-Joystick can break very easily. Many people have noticed poor responsiveness, and in more serious cases the joystick will "move on its own". The only permanent solution is to replace the joystick, which you can do by purchasing a small kit.

PSP 3000 Pros/Cons

Pros:

-The screen is capable of rendering a higher range of colors.
-The screen also has an improved response time.

Cons:

-Connot install custom firmware, therefore no emulators.
-I've recently read that the PSP 3000's joystick is exactly the same as the 2000 model.
-The screen can produce visible artifacts. In other words you'll actually notice the interlacing, and I've heard it can occasionally get pretty bad.

The PSP is known for having a very high quality screen overall. It's quite fantastic for movies and video. The ghosting even on the 2000 model isn't bad at all. Considering the fact that the PSP 2000's screen is pretty good to begin with, I don't find the 3000's screen a worthwhile tradeoff. Especially considering the interlacing issues.

Uhh you forgot the 3000 has a buit in mic. ;)
That I did. Then again you could always plug a mic in anyways :p.

You can get a modded 2000 model on ebay as well. :S I modded mine myself, it's pretty simple.

I wouldn't recommend it, as there aren't enough good games for it to be a wise investment.
I strongly disagree, though this is a matter of opinion of course. However, it has Crush, an ingenious puzzle game, Mercury, which was released for the wii but in my opinion suffers for the wii controls, Patapon, which is flat out ingenious though it can be a little grindy at times, Loco Roco, again insanely unique, a Katamari game if you really can't get enough of them, a better selection of RPG's than the DS (OK, none come to mind at the moment, but I swear there are some), God of War of course, Burnout (which to me might be my number one handheld game), Lumines, a horde of classic game remakes (including Mutant League Football! Play this game right now everyone, and it comes in a pack with a dozen other games that are almost all fun), some good scrolling shooters... uh... crap, I ran out of steam there.

OK, I am probably unique in liking almost all of these genres when they are well done, but maybe more niche gamers will be hard pressed to find a specific collection of games unless you are into action/puzzle type games. Well, that's my part spoken anyway, take it as it is.

Thats a load of bullshit if you will pardon my language. Sony's firmware updates dont fuck up your PSP unless you have custom firmware. Your saying your angry because sony is trying to prevent software that can be used for piracy from being on their system? You don't need update patches for games, if you don't have the firmware it need to run the game the game COMES WITH THE FIRMWARE. Sony has every right to oppose custom firmware because there is software that can be used to copy and pirate games, so don't ***** at sony for trying to protect their business. They should listen to the home brew community i will give you that.

3) The PSP bears some unnatural quality that makes me dislike holding it. I don't know if it's some kind of ergonomic issue, but the playing the PSP feels like trying to get romantic with a woman who had a baby 37 minutes ago.
Why do people complain about it's shape but i never hear complaints about this.....

Anyone see the similarities.

Sorry i cant sit by when bad arguments like those are being spewed left and right about a perfectly fine system. Just my counter argument I guess.

oh and here's a good article, although old, that does a good job at explaining and comparing the DS and PSP in a reasonable manner. http://www.4colorrebellion.com/archives/2005/10/10/psp-a-beautiful-stranger/

Ignoring anything else that's been said and speaking from personal experience:

I got mine the day after they were released. I got about four games for it in the two years I had it. I played it for a cumulative total of less than 12 hours in that time. I sold it for a fraction of what I paid and have never regretted doing so.

So... unless there's been a flood of decent games in the past 18 months, I wouldn't be able to recommend it in good conscience unless you can get hold of one ludicrously cheap or really like some of the other features that I didn't care about.

I'm sure this has been said by somebody by now, but I figured I'd reinforce it or add it. You're much better off with a Nintendo DS.

Um what? The lid is open on the DS. You do realize that closes, right? The DS actually fits very nicely into a pocket. Obviously one would want to close the lid to accomplish that.

But they are still roughly the same length, width, and thickness, that is what i was referring to. Sorry for that confusion but you should understand.

Though the PSP is slightly longer, but I get your point.

Basically what I hope the OP gets from this thread is this;

If the PSP has the games you want on it, go for it. If it doesn't, then don't waste your money. Don't let anyone tell you otherwise, that the DS "Has a wider variety of games" or the PSP "has no good games", they both fill a niche for different people.

The games should be your primary concern, and if it has enough to you then the PSP is worth buying.
