It is my 21st today (don't worry, I had the part yesterday and the day before, the only reason I'm here is because I'm hungover.) and I have a bit of cash to spend. I've been looking into it and it seems like my kind of thing. Now, I have a PSP and that suffers from not really having enough GOOD games, and I'm worried the PS Vita will go the same way. I'm just wanting some opinions from people who have actually played on them before I make my decision.

What do you like?
What don't you like?
What games are worth getting?
What games are worth avoiding?
Will it stick around?

I picked up a Vita recently and, while I can't say that it's a must buy console, it's pretty good. I think you should leave it for now and see if it picks up however.

It looks interesting to me but not interesting enough the only game I really want on it is Gravity Rush and its a lot of money to shell out for one game. If I was going to be moving around a lot like last year I would probably get one but for now I can just play on my consoles quite happily so have no need for mobile gaming.

I got mine on release. A bit of a mistake, not because it's a bad console but because nothing is out for it at the moment. If you like a lot of fighting games I guess it's ok because there's LOADS of them. The only games I've really played on it are Rayman Origins (fantastic handheld port) and BlazBlue Continuum Shift.

I'd say wait for a few more titles, and until they get the PS1/2 classics working on it so you can pick up games like FF7/10. Although if you want a lot of handheld fighting games, get one now and maybe pick stuff up like Gravity rush and Rayman Origins.

Like all consoles, wait a bit until the games pick up and there are a few more software updates, and a drop in price. I got my 3DS a few months ago after it got massively reduced here in the UK, and this year there are plenty of games for it. I do intend to get a Vita, just not when its so damn expensive.

I just got it a few weeks ago because (1) Gravity Rush and (2) it was my birthday, so I didn't have to pay for it. I can't decide whether or not to recommend it to other people, though: on the one hand, GR is pretty much the only Vita game worth having at this point, but on the other hand, I want more people to buy it and improve the odds that I'll get a sequel. Hmm.

I can help you, Mr. Chairman!

What do you like? -Both touch screens work like a dream. As do the joysticks. Graphics are beautiful. And Gravity Rush. Gravity Rush takes the cake for best game currently on the system. Soon to be replaced by P4:G, I'm sure.

What don't you like? -No flash support. Sony said something about a youtube app in the future, but I've yet to see that happen. The 3-G service is pretty useless. The system is also a bit expensive.

What games are worth getting? -Rayman: Origins, Disgaea 3: Absence of Detention, Uncharted: Golden Abyss, Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3, Gravity Rush, Persona 4: Golden, Wipeout 2048, and Escape Plan.

What games are worth avoiding? -Probably the casual games that introduce the system to you, like Little Deviants. I hear Dungeon Hunter Alliance is currently the worst game for the system, and it's just an overpriced port of a PS3/360 downloadable game.

Will it stick around? -Most certainly. Many major companies have some big games in the roster coming out in the next year or so. I think sony said something about a new Monster Hunter, GTA, and Bioshock?

When I saw that it has Marvel vs Capcom 3, I almost bought it on the spot, but then realized I better do some research on the system. Thought I probably should wait a year or so.

I've been thinking about it myself recently and the only game I'd consider getting for the vita is Persona 4: Golden. But hey...I'd probably spend a lot of time on that; so it may be worthwhile.

I have one and I wouldn't advise you to get one. The games are pretty expensive for handhelds and they're just not that good anyway. Gravity Rush seems interesting but I'm not confident enough to spend £30 on it.

I'd wait until Christmas time when Assassin's Creed Liberations comes out, because that seems pretty good. There's also a COD game coming out if you like those kind of things.

Thanks everyone for your help, opinions seem pretty mixed, although slightly against getting one overall. I think I'm leaning slightly towards getting one though, as I do a lot of travelling, and they seem my kind of deal.

This is the perfect answer

I've been really wanting to play Disgaea 3 actually.
Is the right joystick ever a pain to use? It seems like it might be a bit awkward. Is it backwards compatible? what's the graphics quality like? Some games on the PSP looked beautiful, Peace Walker for example, while others looked like something off the N64 without the good art direction. Are the touchscreens really gimmicky, or actually useful? Sorry about all the questions.

Agreed. Persona 4 is about the only reason to get a VITA.
i know that many people and stores have been holding back on the VITA because of the lack of titles, but P4 may change the situation :)

Right now it seems to be suffering from exactly the same pitfall that made me never want a PSP - It's a handheld, dumbed down version of what the home PlayStation can do... And with less games to boot. Anything done on a Vita could probably be done better on the PS3.

It looks great, but there aren't currently enough games out to justify the expense. I want Persona 4 The Golden, but I wouldn't buy the PS Vita just for that.

I would highly recommend a Vita.
Unlike most of the people on this thread however, I'm not a big fan of JRPGs. My favorite Vita games are Uncharted: Golden Abyss, Gravity Rush & Unit 13.
It all depends on what you're into, but there are demos available for every game I've listed & many more.

If you're going to get a Vita however, i think it's a good idea to get the biggest memory card you can for it & download everything off of the PSN; that way you'll have all of your games conveniently on hand at all times.

It has?! Hah, shows how much I know.

Not at all. I play Monster Hunter Freedom Unite all the time with it. Same with Uncharted. While Uncharted can use the gyroscope to aim, I usually keep using the right joystick. Other PSP games that use the control pad can easily be switched to the right stick and they work even better.

Is it backwards compatible? what's the graphics quality like? Some games on the PSP looked beautiful, Peace Walker for example, while others looked like something off the N64 without the good art direction.
It is backwards compatible, but you can only buy digital versions of PSP games currently in the store. The PSP graphics on the Vita look amazing. While play Monster Hunter with my friend, I decided to compare screens while he was playing on PSP and I was on my Vita. The Vita version has a much wider color capacity, less choppy pixels, and has an overall better picture. It makes a great improvement. Disgaea 1 and P3P also look very impressive on the wide screen.

Are the touchscreens really gimmicky, or actually useful? Sorry about all the questions.
No problem, dude. I'm happy to help.

It really depends on the game you play.

Uncharted, for example, uses the front and back touchscreens to solve some puzzles and allow you to navigate the environment with a single swipe of the finger.

Disgaea has no use for the touchscreens other than making the gameplay more convenient, like navigating menus quicker by flicking through the selected items, changing the camera, and just having fun.(In the Hub world, I got bored and decided what would happen if I touched one of the npcs. Turns out, you can use the touch screen to fling them. *Cue evil smile*) You can play the game without using the touchscreen options at all.

Gravity Rush is pretty dependent on the touch screen and gyroscope but it doesn't feel gimmicky at all (to me, atleast). You swipe the screen in the direction you want the protagonist to dodge while in combat, and you can put both thumbs on the corners of the screen and allow the protag. to do a gravity slide through the environment. You tilt the console while she's sliding left or right to make sharp turns and what not.

I don't own one but a part of me wants one because it's supposedly region free. If I want to play any Hatsune games I can either get a PSV and import the games or I can import a 3DS and whatever games she puts out on that. That's really the only reason I would want a PSV honestly...I've played with the demo one we have at work but the dual touch-screens really put me off...especially since the main screen is a touch screen. I was raised being told to never touch the screen after all and to be given one without a stylus just feels weird to me, almost taboo.
