How about optional gender choice? I mean, Link is a silent protagonist, so it shouldn't make a difference in the narrative.
Actually, yeah, that's a pretty good idea too.
I thought so, I mean that father was able to do it for his girl for Wind Waker, so it shouldn't be too hard really.

This is a good idea, but then they are flirting with having romance in the Zelda series, and that might make things complicated. If they were going to do that they would probably remove all hints of romance to avoid controversy. Also there are a lot more models to make.

Still, I think it's the most interesting way to do it.

That's a good point, didn't think of that, but I'm sure they would find a way about it.

Ummm, but isn't Link supposed to be the same character all the time? Unless you include some gender bender magic, there's no way to make Link female while maintaining him still being the same character.

I mean, they didn't go and make Carth a woman between KOTOR1 and KOTOR2? In KOTOR2 they even let you decide what gender Revan was according to what you played in 1, which was neat and I'd be quite cross if I finished 1 with a female Revan and then in 2, all the talk would be about "him". Even if Revan was canonically male.

That said, I am not opposed to a female Link. As long as it's justified and explained how come he's suddenly a "she".

I could go with a female Link, or simply putting Zelda in the main protagonist role for a while.

I've been advocating a "Zelda Mode" (similar to Castlevania's "Belmont Mode") as a first step towards that for ages. More of a focus on magic, what with her connection to the Triforce of Wisdom.

While I'm opposed to Link being exclusively a female, I wouldn't mind seeing the option for Link to be either male or female.

that just seems lazy really, we should work on adding new interesting female characters to the world, instead of just going "HEY LUK GUYZ! WE MADE THIS CHARACT3R HAVE A VAG! SEE HOW INCLUSIVE AND OPEN MINDED WE ARE!!!"

No, I think this idea is retarded quite honestly. I would have no problem with Zelda being the protagonist hero as herself. But making Link into a girl serves no purpose. Why make him a girl? I don't understand the logic being used here.

Will Zelda be a boy?

Not that it matters and you can say this is just me thinking dont mess with what works, I think one of the reasons why zelda works as a story is its classical nature. A young boy who becomes a hero, out to save a princess from an evil who is wholely competent in herself, and going on a grand journey to do so.

Plus I dont know where or how it would fall continuity wise. if you want a female lead zelda game, just make a game where zelda is the protagonist herself.

No. If you want to promote feminism, the way to do it is to make new, interesting, strong female characters, not just add boobs to existing ones. That demeans us all, I think.

Not really. Ganon is more or less the same guy/creature in all the games he's in, though.

With Link and Zelda it's supposed to primarily be a bloodline thing, although that's not always the case with Link. For example:
- Wind Waker's Link couldn't be an ancestor of Ocarina's Link, since he vanished from that timeline after Ganon's defeat.
- A Link to the Past's Link was an ancestor of one of the knights who sealed away Ganon after that timeline's Link died.

This is one of those moments when I'm really loving that an official timeline was released.

Carth was the same character between the two games. The links between Zelda games are different characters. Windwaker Link is not the same person as Twillight Princess link.
Now that I think about it this is actually a good idea. All Nintendo would have to say is "This incarnation of Link is female. Deal with it". Unfortunately I can see problems with fans who can't deal with it so I doubt it will ever happen.
EDIT: Oh look, a bunch of posts outlining exactly what I'm talking about

I don't follow the Zelda timeline closely at all but I remember hearing that there are different Links in different LoZ games anyway so I don't see what the issue would be. Making Zelda the main character would likely take some alteration to how the game actually plays. Making Link female, however, wouldn't have to change anything at all.

could be interesting, worst case scenario; some bitching by entitled fans (as there always is when change rears its head), and some new interactions/relationships/etc in what will likely be a mediocre-at-worse Zelda game. hell if it doesn't work Guy-Link will be back soon enough for the next instalment

Ehhh...it would feel like a blatant attempt to look progressive, I think. That goes for gender swapping any character, really. And it seems like it would be a little empty to make that kind of gesture in a game which gender matters next to nothing.

I've had the thought that it would be interesting to have a game with Prince Zelda with a female Link. I would definitely still play it, just with the condition that they still don't talk. It's not allowed.
