If you think beer should be illegal (which I don't agree. I think it should be more strict with its rules but not banned) then you should think that porn, cigarettes, and more things that "don't help anyone". But I'm interested in what you might link later.

Well, legalize marijuana, and you take away a major drain on our resources, namely minor drug offenders doing prison time. In addition, making it legal will cause a reverse psychology effect; your average kid won't see it as "cool" anymore.
I honestly don't know if you're serious on the prison part, or just joking. Yeah its illegal because cops need a reliable source of income and something to show the media on the news every day. That's a bad thing and people shouldn't go to jail for the sake of the country, otherwise volunteer yourself.

I think it should be legal purely for the tax purposes. I wouldn't touch the stuff, but we might as well profit from those who do.

I don't agree entirely with your What would happen if it were legal and what would happen if it were illegal I have to say.

In my opinion, I think it should be legalised. I don't think it would help to stop underage people getting their hands on it, when have you ever seen a 14 year old kid struggle to get some cigarettes? That said though, I think it would have a few benefits that outweigh the downsides.

For started, it would take the criminal element out of it, this is always a good thing. It also means that it can be taxed, increasing government income.

I also do not think it would lead to many more people smoking than already, I know of a large number of people who smoke on a regular basis and they never have trouble getting hold of some should they wish. Therefore, I would imagine that even if it were legal that a large portion of people who do not smoke it would keep that way.

There are a few aspects I'm not sure of though. For example, is it possible to test for somebody to see if they are under the influence of weed straight away? It would be important for that to exist in order for it to be legalised in order to enforce laws against smoking and driving for example. There's also the possiblity that due to taxation it could end up costing a lot more than it currently does from the black market :p

I say legalize it.But have a buyers limit,so that one can only buy so much weed every week/month.Sure,some would just make others buy it for them. But it would still hold some people back from buying overdoses.
you can't OD on marijuana. that's fundementally impossible.

Or you'd have to directly put the shit into your veins.

Seriously, a university did research on it and you're more likely to OD on water.
Oh,well I did not know that.Thank you for expanding my knowledge.

Well, Cigarettes and weed are not that different, and frankly I don't see anyone being hurt by it, so it's fine by me, I won't touch it anyway.

It should be legalized. Then, all the employers who forbid narcotics use will have to terminate the employees that use marijuana and hire folks that are looking for jobs.

I live in Canada where illegal smokes are a problem. People buy them from Indian reservations and sell them dirt cheap ($15 a carton). Hell they even have silly TV ads to try and convince people illegal smokes are supporting the mob and terrorism.

And it should be legal. It isn't any worse than drinking. Especially when Salvia is legal and sold in stores.

Evidence shows it to be less bad for you than alcohol and cigarettes. If it were legalised, a government standard of quality could be introduced to it. It's what weed is mixed with that is more of a health concern, and legalising it would remove this issue. The government would tax it. All reasons for legalisation. People who want to use it will use it anyway, legal or not. They're harming no one but themselves, same as smoking.

Only tried it once, but I think it should be legalized. In Holland, marijuana, a relatively safe drug is legal, while other drugs like cocaine and heroine are put under a zero tolerance policy. That discourages heavy drug users, thus lowering the rate of ODs and other drug related deaths.
Just makes more sense that way.

Yeah why not make it legal. I've never, ever, ever taken marijuana (nor do I think I want to, no personal objections to the drug or people who use it but I've just never been that interested in it)or any other illegal drug, but I've spent a lot of time with people who do take it. The effects seem similar to alcohol, probably can cause a lot of damage if abused (Just like alcohol) but other wise not bad.

Well I'm not an expert heh. Yeah it won't make it any harder for kids to get it but now that the government is watching they will catch kids more frequently. Or let it slide like smoking is. In my high school, lots of kids smoke outside the school but nothing happens to them.

You tell them "Squirtle = Squirrel + Turtle" and arrest them if they go "Whoooaaa maaan".

Bur srsly I think its easy to test breath or blood, or even just look at their stoned face. I'm not sure though, I should look it up.

there's no "i use/have used it and think it should be illegal" option, which is what i'd pick.
I didn't think anyone would think that. Is it the thrill of the moment, knowing you can't do it? Haha okay I'll add it in.
it's more the having watched a few friends devolve into slurring, brainless wrecks of people. it loses its fun when you have to look at your friends in such a state. they'd probably be ok if they could dry out for a few months but whoever said cannabis isn't addictive needs to maybe re evaluate the evidence.
I'll bet this has already been pointed out to you...>.>
It's not physically addictive, but it can be psychologically addictive if you have a weak will (not meaning to insult your friends, but still). Fortunately, I don't, so after having tried it once or twice, I'm cool with not having it for ages. It's really more a social thing for me, hang out with my brother's band and their friends (all college age), smoke a joint, have an eighth of sake. It's how we chill and there's nothing "addictive" about it to me since I only hang with them about once every six months or so.

I voted "don't use and think it should be legal" since I don't use it regularly.

It should stay illegal. It may be safe for the moment, but the way it (I'll try to phrase this in English as good as I can) dissolves into your body fat, parts of it will stay in your body. Sometimes nothing happens, but in cases, you'll stand there 20 years later, the fat in your body dissolves and you get high while driving your kids to school, congratulations. You've set yourself on a drug time bomb.

And I will say, that even though cigarettes are legal here, there are a bunch of people in my school that smokes. So legalization doesn't do much to keep the kids away.

Legalize, tax, and regulate, for reasons that people have already gone over; increased gov't revenue, weed wouldn't be financing drug cartels, we wouldn't be needlessly incarcerating people. It'd save a whole lot of money that could go into something worthwhile.

Actually there's a huge difference, because tobacco kills 400,000+ a year (in the U.S. alone, I think) and weed hasn't had one recorded death attributed directly to it. Not to mention the tests they did in the seventies on the Rhesus monkeys was horribly botched and designed to harbor negative results. Basically what they did was strap a mask attached to a gas tank filled with Marijuana smoke onto the monkeys' faces everyday for fifteen minutes for a year. Forcing an animal to breath nothing but smoke for fifteen minutes straight everyday for 365 day is going to cause damage. To your lungs, your heart, your brain, pretty much anything. Also, I think the official theory is that weed doesn't kill brain cells, it just makes them inactive for the short time that you're high.

This isn't aimed at you necessarily, I was going to post a comment like this anyways, I just figured I'd kill 2 birds with one stone.

Haha, nice!

You'd really need to be able to test breath, police officers testing blood seems excessive and making an arrest based on the look on their face is never gonna happen. But yeh, I'm no expert either, this was just one of my initial thoughts about the practicalities of legalising it.
