Okay, strictly speaking I believe that the way the legal system is supposed to work is that someone is assigned so much time in jail and then they are released. I understand the dangers but under the current system if they are released then they should have true freedom and people should not be allowed to kick them out of communities, and limit their rights.
This is not to say that the legal system is actually RIGHT in releasing these guys to begin with for the most part. Especially with the rate of multiple offense. Having been molested when I was six (traumatic enough I don't remeber it) I'm all for a death penelty or life imprisonment, rendering the above arguement moot. However under the current situations I feel society should play along by the spirit of it's own rules. None of these offender registries and such should exist. If they are agreed upon to require such things they should not be walking the street to begin with. In harassing people who have been freed from prison society itself becomes the bad guy.
Basically society needs to grow a pair when it comes to letting the system punish people.

When it comes to pedophillia and "statutory rape" I have mixed opinions on the subject. I do not know the details of this guy's case so this is not associated with him.
Generally speaking I have no issue with teens having sex with each other. I'm one of those "distribute condoms in school" type guys. It's part of growing up and learning about life. Everyone involved is immature so it tends to balance out.
I DO have an issue with adults having sex with teenagers. It's not a physical thing (even if a bit gross) since the teens are physically capable of sex and such. It's a mental and emotional thing, and I feel that the adult and teen views of life and relationships simply differ FAR too much. Having some teen girl convinced that the 30 year old guy really loves her and wants to take care of her can be a SERIOUS problem, and it does happen (just an example). That's a no-no. There are just so many things that can go wrong that it's illegal for a reason.
Still I draw a line between someone who for example gets involved with "Jailbait" and someone who molests pre-sexual humans. Especially seeing as you find PLENTY of young people (girls especially) who chase older men and present themselves as being older and such. Depending on the situation this might just be a slap on the wrist type offense. Part of being an adult is responsibility, being careful of such things, and having the self control to keep it in your bloody pants when it's wrong. We are not animals.
The guys who deserve death are those who chase after little children, presexual humans.
On the issue of Jailbait, some of my favorite examples for explaining why a clear line needs to be drawn are things like "Buffy The Vampire Slayer". The character Buffy is like 15 or 16 when the series starts, and she winds up getting it on with a centuries old vampire who is like physically 30 or something. In the context of the series this is okay because it's fantasy and we're dealing with a teenager far differant from anything that really exists (ie superheroes with cosmic responsibilities do not exist, if they did our laws would probably be differant on a lot of things). Still there is no denying it turned Sarah Michelle Geller into a superstar sex symbol for quite a while. This without getting into movies like "Porky's" and "American Pie", various adult comics, anime, manga, and whatever other fantasy you decide to come up with. The thing about being an adult is responsibility and seperating fantasy from reality.
At any rate, my general attitude is that if the guy in the above article attacked pre-sexual humans, they should have just put him out of everyone's misery. Grow a pair and write some laws to reflect that, or get used to the idea of defending freaks because society GAVE them the rights.
Things like this are why I oppose censorship in other threads, and suggest companies like Valve consider stronger action. Once you establish messed up laws they are hard to deal with. Today society releases pedophilles, tomorrow it censors video games.

As far as "curing" sex offenders goes, well nobody wants to do the research to be honest. Sex drives are based on chemicals, and the brain. Truthfully nobody fully understands it. We do know however that you CAN change someone's sexual orientation through hardcore deprogramming methods (ie long term regimented physical and mental torture). Simply put people can evolve, have their personalities fragment, and all kinds of things. You torment someone to the point where youg get the changes you want, record the changes that occured, and then find ways to try and artificially induce them.
Many people argue there must be easier methods to do the research, but not really, which is why you don't see it being done (then there are of course political issues about someone developing a 'cure' for homosexuality and such, but that is another issue entirely).
Right now the best bet is chemical castration, but honestly that's considered cruel and unusual in many places. The idea of giving someone a choice of death or chemical castration is something that nobody wants to put on the books. It also raises the issue of things like the damage they already did.
This is getting too involved, but basically I feel that the guys harassing the dude are wrong, but only because they themselves decided they were. If they are going to attack the guy with firebombs, just pass a law saying to dust off 'ol sparky (or whatever they use in Australia).
