Not necessary (unless you want to communicate command of a language, as well as general intelligence, and not come off looking like you were dropped at birth) ;)

To an extent, yes. It's ok if you use lol, wtf, omg or any else like those. I remember I was once giving my intelligent opinion on Obama and Socialism and I wrote the word "to" instead of "too" so some Grammar Nazi quickly detected my spelling error and slapped a dunce cap on me and tossed me into a short bus heading to the Special Olympics.
Smartly, you got off one stop early, walked back, caught him from behind and through him off a ten story balcony, right? ;)

While I do champion good use of the English language, everyone is entitled to make a spelling mistake every so often without persecution.

Considering that spell check utilities are readily available with modern web browsers; everyone should try their best to use it, and even proofread our posts as a last resort.
Spell check doesn't replace a solid educational foundation in writing.

They should use an acceptable level of both of them, but it's not a necessity for every post to go through hours of editing, it's rude to try and force others match a rather over the top set of expectations, though again it's also disrespectful to show up with something best described as an alien language.
This.

Depends I suppose. If you're writing something for the user reviews section or a particularly long post then correct spelling and grammar is a must, or else it's just too much work to read and decipher it all yourself. If it's just a short post, like a couple of lines, it doesn't matter to me.

I read that perfectly fine, but to be honest, I never see people spell like that. It's normally just a few mistakes, like a letter left out or switched.
Grammar and acronyms are the big ones. Run on sentences, illiterate structure, taking two letters out of the word "you," and so on.

I found that grammar and spelling are your form of presentation on the internet. I'll be more likely to take you seriously if you present yourself well.

Yes, but only to a certain point.

For example who cares if the proper punctuation is used or not and capitalization is nothing to get all upset about.

As an English major, the answer to this is obviously going to be "Hey guys, use a bit more grammar from time to time. Please?"

The problem is I don't ask for constant proper grammar or spelling. I have no hate for folks who mind concluding sentences with prepositions, or making obscure but functional use of sentence fragments. It honestly depends entirely on how well it works in application.
That's essentially what I said a page back (including being an English major), so I agree completely. People should always work towards whatever shortcomings they may have, and put effort into their work. But to expect everybody to be on a level playing field when it comes to language is ridiculous to me.

"Effort" is the key word here.

Ah, I'm sad I missed that. Well said, none the less.

It's a forum. Where people can take their time to articulate themselves and have very, very, long, dull conversations featuring big words and bigger speeches. Therefore, take your time. If I wanted to slingshot responses to folk in a manner akin to an illiterate game of pong, I would use an instant messanger or a chatroom.

I am not a grammar nazi. I think that if someone breaks a few grammar rules, or makes a spelling mistake, or doesnt use apostrophes or capitalisation, then its fine as long as you know what they are saying/trying to say.

HOWEVER!

ai hayt wen ppl typ liek thz. I am hate people talk style of all your base are belong to us. Seriously, are you really that lazy? I guess I can understand if you are texting and have a phone without a keyboard, in which case it helps a lot. but if you have a keyboard, then it really doesnt make it any faster that you are doing this. Its not easier, its not l33t. Its stupid.

I wonder what would happen if someone went to 4Chan and posted with proper grammar?

You irritate me. [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/18.80331] Please do not use this as a defence against proper spelling. When I take special care to ensure that my writing does not contain spelling mistakes, people making stupid excuses like this horrifies me.
Now, that was mean. I don't spell like this and I take great pride in my spelling. This whole paragraph was copy/pasted, that's why it's in quotes.
I was trying to make a joke and enjoying myself. Please try to grasp the concept that people do enjoy themselves when discussing a topic.

I don't use this as a Defense, I use this as a funny piece of trivia.

Good grammar is respected. People who writes: "Z0MG!!1!!!!!11one!!! l00k a7 dis freaikng effing 1337zz picz!! They rulez!!", will most likely get a response like this: "Dear sir, I have absolutely no idea, what you're trying to utter. Please elaborate."

therefore, use grammar! We'll actually be able to understand you.

The occasional error does not bother me. Everyone does it for one, and for two sometimes it's just a lot faster to get a point across. Grammar and spelling is nothing more than a complex set of rules past down from the first trifecta of old ladies who thought english class should be manditory until the day you die. Somewhere along the line Grammar Nazis sprung up forgetting that the whole point to grammar and proper spelling was so that people can understand you. "I dnot mnid how you slpel so lnog as I can udretsannd you wihtuot hivnag to raed it slwloy." and all that. Though on this forum it's somewhat mandetory and since this isn't a public venue it's wise to respect the rules written or otherwise.
