Topic done five times that I can remember.

Anti-Smokers say it's harmful and they don't like the smell.
Smokers point out the 90% tax they pay that props up the Health service, it's an addiction and it's their choice.
Anti-Smokers repeat it smells bad and some call for the death penalty.

There ya go. /thread.

Marijuana is illegal, and look how many people smoke that regardless.

Does your friend honestly think if tobacco smoking is banned that the use will really go down?

The thing about smoking is that it, arguably, isn't REALLY the smoker's choice since they are addicted.

Personally, I think it should be illegal, if only because there is basically no upside to smoking. I don't think a prohibition-like situation would occur, since a lot of smokers don't even like that they smoke.

But realistically it's probably never going to be illegal.

Gradually phase it out. Illegal to start smoking, but people who are already can keep going to their hearts content. (Actually.. their heart prob isn't too content with that) Some kind of license you can register for free or something because smokers can't go cold turkey straight up.

Apparently. I never understood the logic behind it.

People aren't born addicted though. It's always a choice to start smoking. No-one's shoving smokes down your throat.

Oh right I forgot, because just because drinking doesn't harm you right away(lie), its a lot worse than smoking. Keep on drinking then and end up in the same boat with cancer as a smoker. Or keep on drinking and screw up and go drive. Like smoking over time will cause issues, so will drinking.
If any part of that was addressed to me, I'm calling strawman.

i'm fine with people smoking weed, but cigarettes are disgusting and you shouldn't smoke them where people can see you. You should be too ashamed. But it is reeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeally fun to cough at smokers when running by them

I think most smoking should be heavily taxed until it is universally socially unacceptable.

What makes marajuana better than cigarettes? Marajuana is in fact worse for your lungs and overall health than cigarettes are. Big gaping hole in your argument.

No, but we still need to stop rampant smoking among certain people. Even I like the prospect of being able to have a cigarette every once in a while, but it's an incredibly addictive substance/activity that's suited in some cultural norms which is creating a large burden to our society. Continue to get smoking away from being "the cool thing" and get more help (not more Nicorette products) for people that have problems with it. I have a similar view on Marijuana. People should have the choice, and it could be great for some people, but not in the way we see it today.

No, I like smoking. It's great at parties or when in a stressful mood.

No, except in public buildings or offices, schools, enclosed spaces etc although a smoking room is OK I reckon.

Non, tobacco should not be made illegal. My thoughts are, if you legalize something, you have more control over it, and less people getting shot over it.

Do we need the government telling us what we can and can't do more than they already do?
If I want to eat transfat, smoke, and use incandescent light bulbs, who should tell me not to?

Would the world be a better place without it? Yes. Is it within reason without causing financial issues? No.

Only in public places, second hand smoke is far too unpleasant and infringes on others. They should have smoking clubs. They should also tax it more; if we are dealing something that is bad e might as well make some money off of it.
