Do you think the moon should have a name and if so what would you call it. I personally think it should have a name to avoid some confusion when talking about astronomy and because it doesn't make a lot of sense for that name to be kept since there are more then one moon in the universe. It would be like calling the sun the star. I would call it Vesta for no exact reason.

I'm pretty sure the proper name for it is Luna. We all just call it the moon anyway.

Edit: Damn, got beat to it.

I didn't realize this was a problem until I played Star Trek Online. I tried out the beta and the noob area was full of people who couldn't find their way back to Earth because the sun was listed as Sol. Oh well, live and learn.

Luna is the common name that the Romans gave it. "The Moon" is the proper name in English which probably referred to the moon's cycles. There's also Selene, if you prefer Greek. It's really not that romantic, unfortunately. Ancient man seemed more concerned with using the moon as a large calendar.

Moon is kinda the name for our moon, every other moon we know about has a name, other than our moon, so i conclude for our moon; Moon can be both a proper and improper noun.

makes sense if you think about it, same with our sun, every sun we know of has a name (or number in tell a proper name is decided on) other than our sun, so one can conclude our sun is named Sun,

and if there is some kind of scientific name for moon, like (Canis lupus familiaris) for dogs, we don't call dogs Canis lupus familiaris. we call them dogs, so i say the proper name for moon is just Moon, the name moon dates back before we new there were other moons.

herp derp, just realized the root word of "lunar" even though I've known it was named Luna.

(Also: it amuses me to refer to the Earth as "Sol 3")

I think that pretty much says it all. Most people aren't aware that the sun and the moon actually do have names because they aren't often referred to by their names.

also, imo the poll is dumb, should it have a name, it has a name. its like asking should bob down the street have a name, if you don't think so your probably not a human, or just hate bob so much you want to dehumanize him.

oh, on a side note, the new captcha really sucks. i had to watch a commercial to get it, although it bugged out so it didn't show me it, i had to watch it again, no avail, so i had to do it a 3rd time to get the audio version of it.

After this, I'm not really sure what to say...
I mean, I voted "Yes", but only because it already has names. o_O

I'd still call it the moon because I'd know exactly what you're talking about. When we're talking about other planets moons, we always say that name, then moon, like "Jupiter's moon".

So, Moon.

Consequently, the greek name for Luna is Selene so you often hear moon activities refered to as "selenic" as well.
