Luna = Moon

they already have names
The thread doesn't really need expanding after this.
And yet, it expands. XD

OT: I always thought it was called The Moon, since technically it's a satellite. I now realize how retarded that is, since a moon is a planetary body that's too small to be considered a planet.

Why is this thread still going? It was based off a misassumption that has already been cleared up by about half a dozen people.
Because some people still believe luna is the proper noun, despite it being a Latin derived adjective.

Our moon's proper noun is 'the Moon'. So says Merriam Webster, Oxford, NASA and the IAU.
'Luna' is a name, 'Lunar' is an adjective derived from 'Luna'
learn english gooder!
you saying that 'Luna' is not a name is the same as me saying 'Fred' isn't.
I'm sorry, but if you want the name changed to Luna, you are going to have to convince NASA, the IAU, Merriam, and the Oxfard dictionary to change -- all the groups I just mentioned cite Moon as the proper noun and official name of our moon.

Deal with it, lol.

I just imagined them trying to name it originally.

Person 1: So...what shall we call the moon?
Person 2: Err...the moon?
Person 1: Yeah that'll do...let's go home!

I was under the impression 'Moon' was it's name and it's scientifically incorrect to say things like 'Moons of Jupiter', instead you say 'natural satellites (or just satellites) of Jupiter' unless you want to refer to them directly as Ganymede, Titan and Europa etc.

We also seem to have a new captcha system o.o

you said 'Luna' wasn't a name, you're wrong, it's a name.
now you're starting about something completely different. i'm not arguing to you about the moon's name, i'm debating the fact that 'Luna' is a name, and you said it isn't.
so go on, go, gogogo.
i'll leave. and you can just do whatever. i have some hot chocolate to make :p

You guys. The Moon isn't properly called Luna, nor is the Sun called Sol. Those are their names in Latin. Astronomers use "the Sun" and "the Moon." Other stars aren't called suns either. They're stars. They have designations and a few lucky have names, but there is only one Sun.
They are Stars, as stars are suns, but we have named ours.
it's like me calling my cat 'gato' which is spanish for cat.
i can go ahead and do that, gato is now its name, even though it means cat.
the moon is officially known as Luna, by both scientific standpoint, and general populace.
No, it's not. The International Astronomical Union, the organization in charge of naming celestial bodies, declared the name of the Earth's sole satellite when being referenced in English as, "the Moon." There is no grey area in that.
when it's refferenced, yes.
it's like me saying 'i can see the moon from here'
there, i am calling it 'the moon' because it is our only moon, and i am refferring to it in terms of our planet.
logically, the same goes for if i name something in another language.
if a person is called Anzu (or whatever the japanese is for 'apricot')
when i refer to them in english, i'm not going to refer to them as 'apricot'
despite what everyone tells me, simply because it's stupid.

you can stoop to technicalities all you want.
and don't type at me in the tone that i am receiving!
I'm going to give you the benefit of the doubt and just let you say you're trolling.

If you think arguing over the proper name for something is too technical, go ahead. If you're going to assume a higher authority than the actual astronomers doing their jobs, go ahead. If you think it's okay to litter the English language with misplaced words from another language, go ahead. I can't stop you from acting in such a manner. There are words for it, but I will remain civil.

But the first post was in English, and made no indication as to what it should be called in any other language. Nobody replied, "le Lune," or "der Mond." That would be ridiculous. Just like your arguments have become.
i'm going to give you the benefit of the doubt and just let you say that you're trolling.

no, you're saying that the moon's name is Moon. it has more than one name, it's just that, despite popular thinking that led the OP to ask if it had a name (instead of refferring to it as moon), it doesn't need to say that answers can be in other languages, and in no way does english get 'littered with misplaced words from another language' by simply giving this answer 'Luna'.
you are making assumptions that i am 'assuming a higher authority' when really, i'm just tryin to help a guy out. you are speaking as if you're above me, but you're acting childish.
i was saying that the moon actually does have a name, in fact, it has more than one name.

now, i'm going to stop, and let you be smug about your delusion of predicament. i'll let you walk-on from this, and go tell all of your friends about how you 'put me in my place' and how i was 'rediculous', and if calling my reasonable responses rediculous makes you feel better, go right ahead.
and i'm just going to make myself some hot chocolate (it's FREEZING here) check my facebook, and maybe go watch a movie.
take care now, bye bye then

Yes, yes you are. You may now go hang your picture on the wall of shame. :p

As for naming The Moon, we've been calling it The Moon for quite some time now. If it's really that much of a problem to have to write Moon as oppose to moon as a proper name Vs. an object then we've got some issues haven't we now?

I believe the Moons name is Luna? Yep. Thats our official name for it. We just call it 'the moon' because its really the only moon around so its probably easier.

The sun also have a name Sol.

No point to this thread. He should have done a quick google search o_O I consider that common knowledge.

Yes, our natural satellite does have name already, its 'Moon'. Just like Jupiters satellites are named Io, Europa, Ganymede and so on.
