Luna has already been mentioned, not much else to say really. If not that than some other latin or perhaps celtic or gaelic phrase/word would suit.

I always liked the name of Mar's moons, Phobos and Deimos though. Very cool and cosmic sounding.

Its the equivalent to naming the first big river/mountain we ever found as "River" and "Mountain"

Lunar and Sol are just Moon and Sun in the different language, piss weak excuse for names.

If they want to play with the big boys and all the other solar systems then I figure they need their own proper names.

Imagine if intergalactic visitors come to our planet, and laugh at us for hours..."Seriously? You called your Sun...sun? BWAHAHAHAH" and continued to call us quaint and pat us on the head.

I reflexively said "luna retards lol" but wikipedia, bless its heart, does state unequivocally that its name is actually the Moon.

I can't believe the thread has gotten so many replies. For starters Moon is a name for THE Moon as our Moon is not any moon it is THE Moon. We also sometimes call it the Latin name for it Luna. There is also you know Google it works like a search bar.

Isn't it just called 'the moon'?

I'd still call it the moon because I'd know exactly what you're talking about. When we're talking about other planets moons, we always say that name, then moon, like "Jupiter's moon".

So, Moon.
Moons.

Moons of Jupiter.

Is there a better theory? Only other theories I've heard are creationist ones.
Well, there is the object capture theory. It is the idea that the Moon was a rogue planetoid or giant space rock that the Earth captured.

on that note, the moons name is not fucking luna.
You're right. It's name is Selene!

unless you were alive a couple thousand years ago, if you speak English call it by its English name. MOON. unless your doing a research project and you want to make sure no one gets our moon confused with any other moon, than go ahead and use the dead language name for our moon that no one has speak other than in scientific terms or to pretend there smart in a very long time.
1. You also have the think about "what if we were observing Earth from another planet". We aren't far off from colonizing Mars so saying "the moon" doesn't help there.
2. Even when we refer to "the moon" there is an implicit "around the Earth".
3. If we had two moons around Earth we would refer to them by their names. Just as a side note, saying Luna's name is "Moon" is the exact same as saying your name is "human".
Well Mars has two moons, Phobos and Deimos. Can't believe I leaned that from Doom, wayback when.

I actually find your reply kinda funny given that THE Solar System is the name of our Planetary system. In fact moon is just a common name for a natural satellite. Just because we call our satellite Moon or Luna or whatever doesn't mean we are little boys. You think if we thought there was a better name we would have given it one? We named all the others why wouldn't we name our own. Just because our satellite is called Moon and we have begun using it as a general term for other satellites in Sci fi doesn't mean they are actually moons.
