I believe it has one - Luna.

Now, I'm not being snarky. I really, really like the name Luna, and I think people should be encouraged to use it whenever they refer to the moon.
Luna is the spanish/italian (and latin) name for it. Like Tierra for Earth or Sol for the Sun. Unlike other celestial bodies who were not commonly refered to by the masses, these 3 got their specific names in each language.

Ha, and even if it hadn't already some names, calling it THE moon is great too.

Say someone would call you THE HUMAN. Not a human, that human over there. THE human... as if you are the perfect specimen the ultra-human.

Same goes for the moon.

I like "the moon". Sure other moons around Saturn and the like have names but this is our moon, and if there is some other species out there, I'm pretty sure they'd have a different word for "moon".

Hm, personally I think calling the moon "Moon" is quite fare actually, you can if you want you, yet the humanity has other problems outside of that.

just what i was gonna say.

its just that nobody USES the names. maybe in the future if the human race branches out to other solar systems, it would become confusing if people tried to continue simply calling them "sun and moon".

The problem with "The Moon" is that it sounds pretty fucking stupid outside the English language. Every country has its own version, if we're going to call it anything let it be "Luna" because:

A) Latin is a dead language, no country is associated with it.
B) Every educated person has a basic understanding of Latin and common words like "Luna", not necessarily the case with English.

The thread doesn't really need expanding after this.
Well, the moon has a name, and all other moons have names, and really all moons are scientifically called sattilites (Im sorry for my horrible spelling) and the only real moon is OUR moon because its name is LUNA. Or you know, If Valve ever takes over the world (Which is definitely a possibility) the moon will be named Chell, or Wheatley or whatever.

NASA and the IAU disagree. See, our moon's name isn't Luna. No. What do NASA, the IAU, Merriam Webster and Oxford recognize as the official name? The Moon. This "Luna" business is an inaccurate bastardization of many different languages and is not even a proper noun.

La Luna? well, maybe not in english, but yes. NASA calls it the moon, because its our moon, and not saturn's.

No. It is the Moon. It's a proper noun for a reason.

Luna was never the Moon's official name.

The man was asking for a personalized name, just like your personal name is not "child" or "human", there are billions of moons out there so what should our moon be called.

I say we name it Bob
actually they're called satellites. The moon is earth's satellite. only one moon.

Uhm, isn't Luna the scientific name (being latin and all) and "The Moon" it's name in english? Just like, for example, the dandelion is called Taraxacum in sciency talk/latin.

I'm no expert in either field, so I'm just guessing here.

on that note, the moons name is not fucking luna. unless you were alive a couple thousand years ago, if you speak English call it by its English name. MOON. unless your doing a research project and you want to make sure no one gets our moon confused with any other moon, than go ahead and use the dead language name for our moon that no one has speak other than in scientific terms or to pretend there smart in a very long time.
Terra's single natural satellite is named Luna, this is what the scientific community calls it. This is just as valid and accurate a name as calling Mars' satellites Phobos and Deimos.

On that very same train of thought, Earth's real name is Terra, not Earth, as we insist on calling it because it literally makes up the whole of the earth (Read: land) beneath our feet. Calling Terra "Land" or "Dirt" or "Rock" is equally as ridiculous as calling it "Earth" or Luna "Moon", but they're colloquialisms I tend to let slide.

Still following this same train of thought, and, as noted upthread, the Sun's name is Sol.

EDIT:
I have no idea why my spoiler and quote tags are not working.

And with that logic, calling the Earth "Terra" is also stupid?

woah... calm down.

honestly, i dont really care what NASA thinks on this matter. they also say Pluto isnt a planet anymore, but a "dwarf" planet. i dont agree with that, either. i consider it to be a planet, and i consider its small size to be irrelevant. why not say Jupiter is no longer a planet, but a "gargantuan planet"?

it does bring up another point, though. NASA changes their mind on things, over time. i mentioned this before, but you must know what will inevitably happen if the human race branches out to other planets - other planets with their OWN moons. they will have to name those moons, and call Earth's moon something other than simply, "moon". the name they would most likely go with would probably be "Luna"... but until then, sure, we will continue to just call it "The Moon", and you will be happy as a clam for that, im sure.

also, many other cultures gave the moon names before your precious NASA, IAU, Webster, and Oxford ever existed. therefore, there are many names for the moon. and none of them have to be proper nouns. know why? because its a name. when you name something, you can name it whatever the hell you want, you can MAKE UP a word. if i were to discover a planet someday, i would probably name it Psstgkitillia or something ridiculous like that, just to irritate people like yourself.

btw, my friends last name is Luna, and i dont think hes upset because his name isnt a proper noun. (because it really doesnt matter)

Yes. Yes that would be stupid. Terra is Latin (meaning dirt) and hasn't been used officially in more years than all our ages combined. Once again, NASA and the IAU call our planet "Earth". If you want to call it Terra, Bob or Jack, I don't really mind. But officially you are wrong.

You don't care what the leading professionals in the world have named something? Fair enough.
