I've noticed a lot of games that were T, but were pushing an M rating(Uncharted: Drake's Fortune, inFamous). And some M games that were more T rated (Assassin's Creed, Fallout 3... kinda). Do you think there should be a middle ground between the two?

Ya there should be for ones that are violent and some gore but no sexuality that you don't need to be 17 to buy.

Because violence is a normal, acceptable behaviour but having sex is disgusting and abhorrant?

I think there should be a 15+ rating, and M should be equivalent to R-rated movie materiel. M should have been equal to R from the start, and was always intended to be, but I see a lot of games getting M ratings that would easily get a PG-13 rating if they were movies.

I'll say yes there needs to be a rating between the two so that M is on games like Manhunt and god of war and something like OT for Older teen for games that are less violent like Persona 3 FES or Half Life 2. Hopefully it would eliminate the need for AO ,the death sentence that comes with it and not have that death sentence attach it self to Mature rated games.

Also, I wish stores would stop "enforcing" the ratings. There is a reason that they are not law.

I'm in two minds. On the one hand, I'd have to wait longer to be able to buy some games, but on the other hand, I'd get some games sooner. I suppose It would be a good thing, since it would help to separate games like manhunt fom fames like fallout 3.

Also, these buttons are fun to click.

Don't know what rating system it is, but we have 3+ 7+ 12+ 16+ and 18+ on the games, and it usually works.

T and M should simply allow for a bit more violent and suggestive content.

It shouldn't affect me, but the way developers have to censor their own work to fit into T or M catogories means the players don't get to see what the devs really want to show.

Only if "M" becomes more hardcore, say 18+, and the developers are free to put whatever in there
They already have a rating for what you're describing. Ao which stands for "Adults Only" and is for ages 18+.

ESRB Ratings and thier recommended ages
eC = 3+
E = 6+
E10+ = 10+
Teens = 13+
M = 17+
Ao = 18+

Problem is, they effectively don't have such a rating at all since stores simply refuse to stock AO titles, with the extension that major companies refuse to make them. AO is such a death sentence that Rockstar re-released GTA: SA to remove content that wasn't actually in the game just so it wouldn't have the AO sticker on it.

I believe what he's talking about is an AO rating which doesn't have the same pariah status and which games are actually released in. 'Adults only' makes it sound like hardcore pornography, 'Mature' makes it sound like something for older people.

No the people who assign ratings simply need to learn about consistency.

I don't really care, I always completely ignore the ratings. I just wish they'd stop telling me that game experience may change during online play.

Yes, I understand what the OP is after. A rating maybe like T15+ for ages 15 and up. I was just commenting on Glefistus post because it's already done and we know the effects of it. What he's asking for is basicly a death sentence to all M titles, not just the Ao ones.

The reason stores enforce ratings is because parents these days are so eager to sue. It's so much cheaper for a store to refuse to sell a 16 year old a copy of GTA than to pay a million dollars to the upset parent of that teenager thanks to the messed up justice system who looks down on big business.

I don't think that's necessarily so; it's more of a PR thing. Wal-Mart is worried by the connotations of 'Adults Only' titles because it's a term which carries implications of pornographic content; it's usually seen with 'XXX' right below it, and that's hardly the image the company wants to project. 'Mature' has far fewer seedy connotations, and retailers might actually be persuaded into stocking 'Mature' titles, regardless of what the term is actually used to represent.

I just wished there a unrated rating like movies where devs can do anything they wanted.
