people want to smoke pot because to them it's cool and edgy. Take away the cool and edgy part and reduce it to Tobacco and I think we'll start getting somewhere as a society.

EDIT: quoting posts made on the first page of a thread when the thread is 10 pages long or more is retarded. Please Refrain from Quoting This Message.
Personally I find quoting posts on the first page perfectly reasonable, as there is no reason not to if it holds a point you would like to adress.

To be honest. The question is wrong. It should not be if pot should be legal, but if alcohol should be illegal.

Because on all counts, alcohol is far worse in damage (both physical, as mental as material) than pot can ever become.

Yes but not for smoking, there's a billion uses to hemp, and it's fucking retarded that it's illegal.

Yes.

Nothing I've heard makes it different from alcohol or tobacco. Make it legal, regulate it and gain new tax revenue to help infrastructure.

You know they tried making alcohol illegal here in the good ol' US of A once. Making it illegal did far more damage than the alcohol itself ever could.

I think that it should be legal because
1. alcohol and tobacco are legal and yet they are worse then weed
2. the amount of people taking more harder drugs (like heroin) will drop due to a lack of the 'gateway effect'

But I doubt it will be legal because it would incredibly hard to tax since it can be grown in areas such as London with little/no equipment required

Yeah, I know. But the joke is, that as long as alcohol is legal, there is no sensible and legitimate reason to keep marijuana banned. Therefore, if marijuana is banned, so must alcohol be. For it is the greater evil of the two.

If it could be legally sold and the US government taxed it, we'd be out of debt in a year.
Because pot tax will get the US government $10 trillion. Right.
Are you kidding me? Maybe the "year" was a bit of an exaggeration but if you add up all the money that the government would make on taxes, and the amount of money they would save by not having to fight against it, we could be nearly debt free a hell of a lot faster than we could any other way.

I don't think you understand how much money $10 trillion is.

$42 billion each year? Cool, we'll pay off the debt in nearly forty years (including the ridiculous interest)... assuming, of course, that the money won't be used elsewhere (it will).
I know full well how much money $10 trillion is which means we need every bit of income that can be mustered. At least it would be a start. Unless you've got some better plan that will make $10 trillion dollars over night...
I'm not saying "don't legalize pot", I'm saying that "out of debt in a year because of it" is a horrible exaggeration. I hate horrible exaggerations.

Honestly, if someone wants to smoke pot then let them smoke pot. I don't see why the government should have the right to say: Hey you there ! Mr. Smokey Mcsmokerston! Even though your decision to smoke pot is absolutely none of our business and affects only you, we're not going to let you do that!

Seriously, it's as stupid as gay marriage and sodomy being illegal: if people want to do something then let them fucking do it because it doesn't affect you, and you have no right to stop them from doing it just because you disapprove.

While a lot of people here thinks marijuana is harmless, it isn't. It's a substance that shouldn't be in your body. I hate smelling cigarettes. I certainly don't want the smell of pot to be as common.

I could care less about smoking. I've never done it and still don't care to. The may as well legalize pot though. A good majority of people smoke. They should just give designated smoking areas, and tax the living hell out of it. May as well make so revenue from it.
Also, make it so you have to be 21 to buy it,but only be 18 to smoke it. Making it a little harder for minors to acquire. (at least in theory. I know there are plenty of ways around it, but whatever helps our government sleep at night.)

Since when was giggling incoherently cool and edgy?

OP: I believe so, yes. I think it should be at the same status as cigarettes, and sold in specialized shops. I think marijuana can be very beneficial, and not just in a recreational sense either. Marijuana has been proved to reduce the pains of chemotherapy, and give the patient a better chance of pulling through. It's been used to treat schizophrenia and Alzheimers, and is often used in general medicine as a pain reliever, where it's legal, obviously.

Add to this that studies by UK government funded projects have consistently proved that cannabis is far less dangerous than both alcohol and tobacco, which are both legal, and there's really no reason not to. The amount of crime it would reduce and people whose lives it would help practically make it the obvious choice.

And if you needed proof, I'm pretty gone right now.
After reading this, I realized I had nothing to add.

No. Personally, I don't even like cigarettes being legal.

Secondhand smoke is obvious. I hate it when I'm out and I have to smell burning bullshit. Also, it's just bad for you. Even if you use a smokeless pipe, pot still fucks your mind pretty badly. Really, I'm against all those drugs that hurt not only yourself, but people around you.

Before alcohol is brought up about "hurting your body", your body is actually designed to be able to take alcohol, just not in excess. People being stupid with alcohol make it hurt your body. On the other hand, every puff of smoke is shaving more of your life off. Your body is NOT designed to inhale smoke or those toxic fumes people get a high off of.
