I don't see why it shouldn't be legalized, especially with things like tobacco being legal.

Before alcohol is brought up about "hurting your body", your body is actually designed to be able to take alcohol, just not in excess. People being stupid with alcohol make it hurt your body. On the other hand, every puff of smoke is shaving more of your life off. Your body is NOT designed to inhale smoke or those toxic fumes people get a high off of.
Not true. Alcohol is just as poisonous to your body.
Alcohol, in small regular doses, can be good for your heart. Particularly red wine.

Well, if they legalize it, then they can regulate it and put taxes on it, which would help economicaly. So long as they have designated areas where they can't smoke it, like with tobacco, then I'm fine with it as long as I don't inhale any of it.

Absolutely true. Your liver can actually digest a level of alcohol per hour (The exact number escapes me at the moment), and in small doses, it's fine for you. As Zeromaeus said, Red Wine can even be good for you.

Yes. They should legalize all drugs for private use.

If you want to fuck yourself up, fine. I don't give a damn if it kills you, so long as you do it in private and don't hurt anyone else.

And if you fuck yourself up accidentally because you took the drug without understanding it, fuck you, learn to read the warning label.

Please tell me that was planned?

OT: YES! Give me a solid reason why alcohol is legal and why marijuana isn't, and I'll back off.
Well, obviously because alcohol had a large corporation behind it to pay bribes back when these things were up for debate.

Though admittedly i voted no, because as everyone stated "hey we should tax it", which means the government would be involved, which means it would be a convoluted pain in the ass, take years of bs litigation to get through, and in the end they'd tax it so high nobody would buy it legally and would just stick to buying it from the places they get it from now.

alcohol was around a long time before it's ill effects were known (in fact it was once thought to have positive health benefits) because it was already in mainstream use the government realised it couldn't ban it. America tried an failed, miserably, crime and corruption skyrocketed. Alcohol has immense negative effects on society through alcoholism and violence etc. If things had turned out differently and marijuana had been discovered before alcohol you would be saying that you found it disturbing that so many people wished to legalise alcohol

If it could be legally sold and the US government taxed it, we'd be out of debt in a year.
You got that right. People still buy cigarettes no matter how high the tax is (my parents both smoked and oftentimes sent me to get cigs when they didn't feel like going out, so I got to see firsthand how pricey it is) and you might as well put the money those bored stoners are shoveling out to good use, eh?

I really wish they'd legalize poppy harvesting and sale to the public. The drug companies can buy it from people with licenses... we should too. Corporations are legally considered individuals... and yet get special privileges in this and in the financial sector. Fuck them.

Cannabis just goes along on the ride to legal town by skipping to opium. Sure, still make heroin terribly illegal, but the smoke and tea aren't bad, just have a label detailing how to use it.

I don't know, there is a large misconception amongst many stoners. I know many who think "cigarettes are nasty, that's why I smoke weed."

While I think people should have the right to do it, theres people very close to me that would smoke it if it was legal. So no, it should stay illegal because I don't want my friends to get hurt

I am of the opinion that if you want to do something within the privacy of your own home and you're not negatively affecting anyone but yourself, anything you want to do should be legal. The problem arises when you start to cause problems for friends and family because of your drug habits, but then again, that's a problem with you, not the drug. (the same can be said for things that are legal, like alcohol, video games, etc.) So I see no reason why pot should be illegal, really.

Semi-related: it's legal to buy cigarettes in Canada, but Trix cereal is banned because "it's too unhealthy."

The main issues around legalisation, for a hypothetical situation, are more subtle than just "the government could make soooooo much money from taxes maaaaan!".

First up, impaired abilities. Weed slows you down, and affects your reaction time and judgement when doing things, such as driving. And don't give me this "I can smoke and drive fine" crap. You're impaired, reaction tests can prove it. Where weed differs from drinking alcohol is that the booze will stay in your system for a short length of time before being flushed or vomited out. Weed can stay in your system for up to six weeks, impairing judgement in a way that can be tested.

Second up, it's physically worse for you than smoking, having much more tar and shit in it. Given that many pot smokers also smoke cigarettes then legalising it may lead to a drastic increase in tobacco consumption, and all the damage and medical costs that includes.

Third up, dosage. Very hard to dose weed, much harder than alcohol. Saying you had half a joint has no meaning when there is no known standard to judge the strength from. For this reason it would be difficult to be able to say how much you had.

Fourth up, "social" smoking. You smoke pot to get stoned. You don't always drink alcohol to get drunk. It differs from booze in this way. People who go home and open a can of beer and drink that beer and have nothing else will have almost no noticable reaction to the alcohol. No one smokes pot in that way - you smoke it to get a reaction, or you don't smoke it at all. That makes it something that should be a very rare thing to do, rather than an every night thing, for most people who aren't artists, poets, rock stars, or possibly animated film animator people who make those really funky twisted worlds.

All those points said - I think weed should be legalised. If you are at home minding your own business and smoking in a reasonably responsible way, then I don't care and you shouldn't be arrested. It should be given the same status as alcohol with all that implies. Drive stoned, lose your license. Go to work stoned, lose your job. However, with respect to weed I don't care if it was something you did a week ago - if your body can't clean your system fast enough then you smoked too much and need to cut back. Legalised pot would not be something you can do every night with no ill effects, it should be something saved for the weekend or even rarer occasions.

its a hard question that brings up more questions. if we legalize it what stops the dealers from turning to violent crime to support theyre loss of income? where will they be allowed to smoke it? what age would it be legal to smoke at? where would it be available? How would we police it? those are the real questions to ask.

pot as a drug is harmless, having less impact on the body as a glass of beer. If it where taxed and regulated the government would make a lot of money from it. I also believe that it would help cut down on tobacco smoking as well, though I have nothing angst smoking, enjoying the odd cigar myself. The argument for or angst the legislation of marijuana is redundant anyway Why? Because almost any can get there hands on it, and most people have (myself included). I have only smoked it once or twice, with no ill effects. There is no reason, or point in keeping it illegal, taxing it would generate a lot of income for the country, which RELLY needs it ATM (I'm talking about the uk).
