I often hear stories of people getting glassed in bars after one idiot has a drink too many. Usually they break their glasses and just use a shard or smash the glass against the victims face. I recently had a talk with someone about banning glasses in bars, and he was a bit mixed on the subject.

On the one hand, he prefered glasses more, they make the drink taste cleaner in a way. On the other hand, people are getting drunk and could use it to hurt someone. So he came to the conclusion the best course of action is replacing glasses with plastic glasses on the busiest days of the week, rather than outright banning them.

I'd probably agree with him, but I'm curious about what the Escapist community thinks. Should glasses be completely replaced with plastic, only be replaced on friday and the weekend, or just not do anything about it?

Yes.

I do seem to remember a soccer player or someone like that who got hospitalized by some fucker who had a drink too many. The offender had thrown a bottle or whatever across the pub and hit him in the face.

Keep it authentic I say, but get an extra shotgun or two in case someone feels the need for throwing glasses.

I think it's up to the individual bars, they know best if they have problems with people getting glassed. I never heard about it before (unless you count that cutscene in SR2) but when I'm in a bar or club that uses glasses I always notice there's a lot of it on the floor, which can be problematic too, apparently walking and drinking don't match too well...
But like I said, bars should decide for themselves if they want to replace the glasses. They know full well that people getting glassed is bad for their reputation.

I think that people should drink more responsibly, and in more moderate amounts. Don't get pissed enough to -want- to glass someone.

That's a much better (if much less feasible) solution.

Hmm.. that`s a hard one.

Honestly I like to have a real "glass". It's looks cleaner and it does not take or give out any previous tastes (when properly washed of course).

On the other hand i can remember 3 times when i got hit by a glass or one of my friends. And its always ugly and dangerous as hell (the eyes...).

In the end, socially, it's better to ban them. Although i would personally not like it at all...

I don't really drink, so my vote is for safety: if they can be successfully replaced with plastic, so be it.

Ban glasses? But then how am I supposed to see anything when I enter a bar? [/notserious]

And I don't think it'll really matter if you ban glasses or not. The drunks will likely find another means to turn a common object into a weapon.

I've never seen a situation get even remotely close to one person glassing another when drunk. I suppose it depends upon the bar/pub individually, but I know I much prefer drinking from a sturdy glass than a plastic cup.

Depends on the bar.

Some pubs almost never have fights, so there's no reason to ban glass. A pub that has frequent fights should think about changing to plastic.

I suppose its safer when drunk people are beating each other with two liter pepsi bottles rather than scotch bottles, but I can see some people getting mad because it might take away from the authenticity of drinking at a bar

most of the gigs and venues i goto aswell as the odd bar have replaced all glass with plastic
including some alcopops

ive witnessed a guy drop his drink watch it smash to pieces in the moshpit then see two guys ending up needing stitches
glass is just too dangerous in certain clubs and pubs

but as for the pubs full of old geezers and yahtzee glass is perfectly safe unless somebody insults branston pickle

Bring back proper wooden ale mugs! Worst you'll get from that is a minor splinter.

No.
Just because some idiots that drink to much and sink so low to do that doesn't mean everyone else should suffer for it.

Why can't we let the bartenders decide? Why can't we allow the owners of the establishments the freedom to choose, instead mandating things like we are God?

People are too egotistical, thinking they should be able to control everyone else, instead of allowing them to have the freedom to choose for themselves.
