No, not in pubs. That really is just Britain as a nanny state and it's pathetic. Treating the public like children will only piss people off more. "Now now, you know you're not allowed glasses because of what could happen," that's all it is at the end of the day. Sure some people get drunk and their night isn't complete until they've blinded someone but that shouldn't mean an outright ban on glasses. Perhaps in an environment like a gig (where most places serve drinks in plastic cups anyway) where it's a good idea, but not a pub, you're talking about basically treating grown men from the ages of 18-90 like children(remember old geezers like a drink too).

Next time it looks like someone about to thrust a glass in your face, remind them that only pussies need weapons to fight.

Depends on the Drinking Establishment for me. Places like Vodka Revolution and other " binge drinkers going out to gets totally smashed on a weekend" type bars could get away with using plastic glasses as they don't sell quality beer. My local however is an old man style traditional pub that sells guest ales etc. I don't want to sound like some sort of CAMRA beardy git, but real ale definately tastes better out of a glass. These kind of pubs also do not suffer from the same kind of violence as town centre high turnover style places so plastic glasses would be unecessary...

How about that type of glass that doesn't shatter?Used in car-windows and such?Unnecessarily complicated, maybe. But bar patrons will bugger off if they're being patronised with glorified sippy cups.

As well as being safer it'd save money in replacements (so long as the plastic ones are strong).

Is it worth mentioning that bottled alcohol you see in gigs these days are plastic? Nothing bad's come of it.

and that's not even going into the fact that some people could just kill you with their bare hands if they wanted to.
If you'd read the OP properly he talks about people getting into violent moods after one too many. This has nothing to do with those who enter a pub with a full intention of starting a fight.
I don't think I missed the point, but you definitely missed mine - people can hurt you with more then the glass in their hands, and outright banning the glass because someone MIGHT throw it is about as silly as banning chairs because someone might throw one at you, or banning fists because someone might throw a punch.

its not about where you are from, every single place on this planet has ppl capable of glassing someone, england, ireland, scotland, japan...anywhere

Its a decision that all places make on a case by case basis: gigs, ban glass thorougly, it can get dropped on the floor and most of the gigs i go to always have ppl hitting the floor after wandering into a mosh pit, land wrong on a piece of glass and thats it, dead, slashed artery

clubs...i think its acceptable on busy nights, where they know its going to be crammed, but there are places in my city where you can go down on a thursday and its dead, and its just like any other bar, but with loud music, they should allow glass there

Sometimes they allow glass bottles b ut still have plastic pint glasses

Its for the owners to judge

and parlour pubs!

Also, how about banning bottlers(verb?) instead of bottles.

He who sacrifices freedom for security deserves neither.

-Benjamin Franklin

This is like banning video games because they make violent people. The people are the ones who are at fault, not the games. Same goes for the glass. If I were to ever be served my beer in a plastic cup, i would demand a refund and never do business in that establishment ever again.

My thoughts exactly.
I'd say give the drinkers a choice. Drink less, or have plastic glasses. (EDIT: drink less meaning not to get yourself in a drunken angry rage.)

True when these people are drunk and have the urge to attack someone they grab what is closest and what can do the most damage. If they cant see a glass then they will grab something else. Tbh the problem is the booze, but i will never let anyone ban that!

Yes, and let's cover bus stops in bubble wrap because people sometimes get their heads smashed through the glass.

I know the last concert I went to used plastic bottles. Getting hit with a plastic bottle doesn't really hurt that bad, but at the same time plastic is terrible for the environment (compared to glass, which can be melted down and recycled). I suppose there's the whole beer snob argument of proper flavor afforded by glass bottles as well.

In my city (Derby - Britain) More or less every Nightclub, bar and the pubs inside the city centre all use Plastic and plastic bottled drinks (including beers and alchopops).

Personally, I feel alot safer, as about 4 months ago one of my friends got some drunk retard deside it would be funny just to smash a cup in his face. My mate got a bruise but nothing too bad, if that had been glass it could have broke and cost him an eye. The guy was kicked out quickly, and rounded up by the police afterwards. But plastic is a preventative measure, no amount of security or deterrants will stop a drunk idiot from hitting someone in the face, no matter how fast you respond.

In some places like my Uni SU bar they have glass during the day time, then when it gets to around 6pm they start serving in plastic.

Note tho, that all the plastic cups that are used are the reuseable hard plastic ones, not disposable ones you'd have at a bbq or anything. So they really feel and look no different.

EDIT: also, some nightclubs I've been in down south that still use glass, go on the dancefloors, and theres so much broken glass that if you were to slip/fall/getpushed then you'll end up with your clothes shredded and lots of glass embedded in your hands/elbows/arse

Depends on the bar really, some that I've been to don't have this problem while others wind up with several beer bottles and glasses getting broken nightly. My college bar made the switch for that exact reason

Or, you know, a concussion. Being hit with a wooden tankard would hurt like a ************ at the VERY least.

The people who shatter glasses in bars are just going to switch to using pocketknives or punching people. In my opinion, the best deterrent for bar violence boils down to the barkeep's ability to tell when a customer's in need of a dry spell.

Yeah but the shotgun is very little compensation for the guy/girl picking glass out of his face.

The plastic cup really doesn't take much from the flavour (at least not of my beloved stongbow -warning- your drink my vary) as longs as its served ice cold really it's all good.
See it from the bright side, they'll be too busy writhing in pain from the shotgun shot to be worried about some glass.
