May I ask why the attachment to the glass? Because I've never understood it, but of course it'd be cold you can't have a warm drink and it still taste as good
Beer from a plastic pint glass or even a can just doesn't have the same bite as when it's from a glass or bottle. It's hard to explain, but I find there's a distinct difference between the two. Plus, the kind of person who prepared to smash a glass over another's head/face is likely to find another equally dangerous implement to achieve their aim.
Yeah I do prefer beer/cider/vodka etc. from a glass, but I'd give it up to prevent someone being seriously hurt. However you do raise a good point (concerning the replacement of a glass in harming someone); the thing is though is that glasses are easy to use as weapons, easy to hold and easy to find as a bar. Alternatives I suppose are pool cues, chairs or darts but these are harder to obtain/use effectively as weapons.

If we started banning things because some idiot may hurt themselves with it we'd end up banning just about everything.

So no, glasses should not be banned from bars because people can't control themselves when they get drunk. It's the idiotic drunk douches that are the problem, not the glass.

I don't think there is any substantial need to ban glasses for the sake of trying to avoid injuries. A glass or a bottle is an improvised weapon or a weapon of opportunity, removing it from the equation isn't going to change the outcome - they are simply going to grab something else.

They could always get that specially treated glass (or maybe it's actually plastic... I don't exactly know) that is just like real glass but breaks into smooth pieces.
Sugar glass, it's what they use in film and TV because it shatters and breaks more easily than real glass.

Maybe have a plastic out "Coating" and the inside to be still glass. It'd be a thin layer of glass, enough to maintain the "Purity" of the drink, and if it is to be used as a weapon it'd be too small to be effective.

Just a thought. :)

If they ban glasses in bars how will I see to drink? *Joke*

Plastic glasses may work. Less harder to break.

I think that people should drink more responsibly, and in more moderate amounts.
And while we're dreaming, I want a pony! :)

No bar i go to has people getting 'glassed'. id never even heard that word until now! A ban would unfairly punish me and the businesses i frequent for doing everything right.

The old man side of my drinking personality likes his real ales and quality foreign beers in their appropriate style of glass. There's a good reason why so many different types of glass exist. That crackling you can hear is the sound of a beer snob emerging from his shell.

The other side of my drinking personality (that is, a penniless student) doesn't give a toss what sort of receptacle it's in as long as it's cheap, tastes like beer and has the desired effect. But, for what it's worth, my favourite pub always uses glass whereas my student union bar (if you can call it that, shoddy little place) uses glass when it's quiet and plastic when it's busy.

There's a bar about 5 minutes walking from my house that I don't go to anymore, because they refuse to even give plastic glasses, and all their beer comes in cans. I think it's the definition of a dive bar. When I get some scotch, or a mixed drink, or a nice beer, I want that baby in a glass, preferably chilled.I find that most situations in bars could be remedied much quicker by the workers stepping in and taking care of it before it escalates.

Other. It needs to be a choice down to the landlord/barstaff. A lot of pubs where I go to university have plastic cups most nights, even though they do have glasses. Broken glass is a real problem round here. They don't give you bottles, or cans.

I don't think so... What I'm talking about is just as sturdy as real glass, but breaks into round-ish pieces.

For some reason, Pyrex comes to mind, but as far as I know it smashes into sharp bits...

Meh, this isn't a matter of what kind of cup people drink out of, it's a matter of cut the idiot off if he starts to get drunk, which any good bartender will do. I mean Hell, if your gonna take all glass out of a bar to keep people getting broken glass embedded in their flesh, you might as well take out all the chairs so no one will get one smashed across their back. Hell, take out the bar itself, so nobody can get their face bashed on it.

See? Doesn't make much sense when you look at it that way, does it?

I'm all for the switch to plastic, would make going out drinking safer as you are less likely to wind up seriously hurt.

However, plastic glasses are a one time use, disposable item, and the eco-nerd within questions whether they would get recycled or not.

Is it wrong I voted for plastic primarily because of how emasculating the picture of macho men drinking from plastic sippy cups is?

And after we ban glass we have to rule to pad all walls in all public locations, nail down all chairs and tables. Then all people outside their own homes have to wear extensive padding, a helmet and boxing gloves.

After that of course we have to set the speed limit to about 4-6 km/H to make the streets safe. Flying will be forbidden, as will all sports, sexual intercourse and other dangerous activity.. like Monopoly (this figurines are pointy).

Seriously though: No... no we should not.

I think that we should let capitalism handle this one. If a bar is going to constantly get sued over someone getting hit with a glass bottle, the establishment will switch over to plastic on weekends and party nights just to avoid the litigation (being in California forces you to think about these things). This is one of those things that has always bugged me about forcing establishments to do similar things like this through a law. If a bar wont do the plastic thing to cover their asses, then let them die through legal fees (you know someone will sue) but don't force EVERYONE to do it because it might affect other businesses negatively that aren't even in the alcohol business. Too much law for "safety" reasons is retarded and we end up with frivolous laws that end up not getting enforced.

Now, if YOU go to places where people hit each other with glasses than you deserve what you get.

The only addendum to this is that I actually hate the concept of using plastic cups on the grounds that they pollute more than re-using glass ones. The hippie in me dies a little at the thought of this.

I don't think I missed the point, but you definitely missed mine - people can hurt you with more then the glass in their hands, and outright banning the glass because someone MIGHT throw it is about as silly as banning chairs because someone might throw one at you, or banning fists because someone might throw a punch.
I guess this is a matter of opinion, but to me that's like saying there's no point banning guns because people will find other ways of killing people.

Banning glass wouldn't completely eliminate violence in pubs, but I'm sure it's make a positive difference in the long run.

Secondly, picking up a glass is a lot easier than a chair or manuevering a pool cube.

So because a few dumbasses do something stupid, we should get rid of glasses altogether? I think not.
