So as most of you may heard through the internet grape vine that wrestling has been dropped from the Olympics. but as someone who occasionally watches the Olympics this pegs me as odd since i though the Olympics were all about sports like wrestling and such. so to here that its being removed confuses me.but from what i have read the only reason its being removed is because its not as popular as the other sports and is being replaced with something more popular. so should wrestling be removed from the Olympics just because its not as popular as the other sports or should it remain.
It was not removed becouse its not popular enough, where did you hear that?

It was removed becouse of how unclear the rules are, there have been a lot of controversy about judges decisions and accusations of corruption.

Ridiculous. Wrestling was one of the original Olympic sports - they will probably replace it with Darts or something. What a crock of shite, the ancient Greeks would be turning in their graves/tombs.
According to reports, Wushu is expected to replace it... for whatever reason.
Had to Google what Wushu actually was.

Hardly a more legitimate event than one of the historical cornerstones of the Olympics. And surely there are more countries with wrestlers than wushu-ers?

Wushu is great but I'd oppose it becoming an Olympic sport for the same reason I don't think football (soccer) should be in the Olympics - there is already a bigger and more prestigious competition representing it. In the case of football, the World Cup, and for Wushu, the Asian Games. Putting it in the Olympics would just present a watered-down version which would attract very little serious participation.

Cutting Wrestling from the Olympics? Nonsense, folly and sacrilege, as far as I'm concerned, not forgetting bullshit.

Current Olympic events include fat, unathletic men shooting comically undersized pistols at targets, dancing horses and women in gimp attire holding their breath underwater while gyrating their legs in the air. But wrestling has to go? Don't make me laugh.

And don't get me started on the irrelevant farce that is the Winter Games. Curling? Skidoo events? Mother-lovin' Bob Skeleton? Jesus wept.

No, It should not.

Its one of the originals and when you look at the amount of bullshit sports are now represented in the games it just makes it worse.

I can't say that I understand why they would take wrestling out. Well, I can understand why in terms of dollars and cents, but not in terms of all of the other factors involved (little things like participation level, global competitiveness and history).

Maybe someone should reopen the real olympics, in honour of the gods of Olympus...
With all and only the original sports... Like running a marathon in full armour.
Huh, I thought they ran naked.

Usually, yes.
Except in one race.
Where it was full combat armour.

How are the rules unclear pin your opponent to the ground for more than 5-10 seconds. it cant get any clearer than that.

I'm still upset about baseball being dropped.

If anything should be done away with it's rhythmic gymnastics. I can appreciate the coordination required, but as a competitive sport it makes no sense to me. Not to mention the pretentiousness of the commentators during the event drives me up the wall.

There's also a point system based upon near-falls, reversals, and escapes that's used to determine a winner if no one has been pinned before the time limit expires.

I think it's ridiculous seeing as wrestling was one of the original sports in the olympics.

Seriously, aside from judo (and maybe taekwondo), every matial arts scoring system makes absolutely no sense to me.

One word - curling.

MAN DON'T START

Curling is the greatest sport ever invented. I could be a olympic curler! Provided, you know, I could find some of those rock things, and some brooms, and an ice rink, none of which I know the actual location of, but whatever!

I can literally forgo personal hygiene and sleep for days while I lay on the couch drinking, eating cheetos, and watching curling.

The true spirit of the olympics.

Ahem

I actually came here to say that we needed to get rid of that lame wrestling years ago and switch completely to hardcore WWE wrestling.

Really? They drop wrestling but not something like dressage? I never really watched the wrestling in the olympics but can understand why it is in there and see no reason why it should have been dropped. The reason I mentioned dressage is because it is one of the sports that shuts out smaller countries (cost of owning competition horses can be upwards of $50,000 could be more, I don't really know), I mean most competitors in the equestrian were British, American, Australian and various western European countries. Then there is also the fact that wrestling comes down to the athletes skill and physical prowess while horse riding usually helps when you have the better horse.

Dressage has a bigger an audience as wrestling, at the big 3 day eventing races they get 1000s of spectators and not all of them rich. Basically they are dumping wrestling for baseball/softball so they can have something for the US TV audience to watch the US winning a gold medal.

I really don't get this. That being said, if I understood correctly, wrestling has not yet been dropped, but it has been dropped into a place where it has to compete against some other sports to get into the olympics.

Still, it's completely ridiculous. Wrestling is one of the absolute cornerstone sports of the olympics, and I don't get how dropping it can even be contemplated. Karelin should come out of retirement and make the IOC include wrestling

After all, could you say no to a man like this?

I think I would piss myself if I got into an argument with him.

But the rules aren't unclear. A pin is still a pin, a takedown is still a takedown, an escape is still an escape, and so on. I didn't see any real controversy in 2012, I only saw that in the boxing, which, I might add, is shit.

Its one of the few events that isn't dominated by either America, China or Western Europe (Just saying), and its a travesty it was removed.

Because wrestling is fakesometimes secretly fixed?

It really all depends on the interest in wrestling against interest in other sports. Should it be dropped? Yes, if they want to add something else people want more.
