I don't care, and I'm certainly not outraged at Microsoft for wanting to charge money. Eighty bucks a year is quite reasonable when you take into account that it's a guarantee to play any game with Live capabilities anytime, and that all you must do is load the game up.

I understand that PSN is free, but I'll be deep in the cold, hard ground before I buy a mockery of a console like the PS3 (I apologize if the above statement offends you, not trying to start a flame war, by reading this you have voided your right to outraged rebuttal).

Okay, I can see why it would be good to have it for free (then i could play it, broke atm >.<) but over all id have to say no, it shouldn't be, as despite what i just said, its not expensive when compared to some online subscriptions (or objectively for that matter), it helps microsoft keep the servers going, and most importantly, it's quite a smacktard barrier. For example, Runescape, as many of you will know, is a free-to-play popular MMO. It is also filled with some of the most childish, immature, and generally dickheaded people in existence. World of Warcraft, a £9/$15 a month MMO, has considerably less of those people, because they are not prepared to pay money for being twats. Xbox Live's price does much the same (to a lesser extent of success, admittedly).

As I said somewhere earlier in the thread, I'm less opposed to monthly service rates than I am to some of the stuff that passes in the Marketplace; though that can't be faulted entirely to Microsoft as I am sure the developers have SOME say in what gets posted and how much it costs. Not to mention what they decide to exclude from add to the game in the first place.

How do you think Sony keeps PSN free? If they can make their online service free then why can't MS? I would honestly like to know, because if you break it down PSN offers pretty much exactly what LIVE offers for free with more updates along the way.
I would like to say in the Xbox's defence, that most of those updates were adding features that the Xbox already has, and just to be a *******, the PS3 still dosen't allow you to chat in game or listen to music in game. (Which I am not saying is worth 50 dollars a year) Which lead me to a question. When the fall update comes out for the Xbox is it going to allow to have up to 8 player chat in game, or just in the menu? I wonder because that would be so cheap for an entire team to be in chat effectively rendering perks like easdrop useless.

I think I fell off that train... what?
Well Yaris is the essence of overpriced(they should pay you to play it) crap on Market.
I thought it was free.

(No seriously, NEVER DOWNLOAD YARIS. Don't even look at it. No, No. In fact, forget about it.)

I can see how people would want it to be free. Wouldn't things be more fun if everything was free. On that point I would rather preffer that gas or electricity was free. Ranting...

Anyway You can't make a practical argument as to why they shopuld give you something for free just because you don't feel like paying for it.

I'l jot this down to small talk rather than an actual suggestion.

Honestly i think it should be free cause microsoft servers may be maintained well but i have still hit alot of lag in L4D and Halo and alot of host lost issues
and for people saying PSN isnt good or is less of a deal i have to disagree there too i have a Ps3 as well and have much better connection and its maintained every week and the games are updated constantly from what i can see but oh well microsoft is making money off us and they will continue to do so because we continue to pay for the service

Yeah sure the servers cost money but when was the last time you had to pay to game on any other platform. They could easily swap ads for paying and no one will ever notice.

They easily absorb the cost in sales anyway.

Because I'm not sure what they would have to cut to reduce or eliminate LIVE's subscription fee, I don't know what to say to this. I think that the service is worth the fees.

*Should Microsoft not care about XBL?
That is really what you are asking. Why is XBL better than PSN? Because the desire of money makes people work better.

I've read almost the entire thread and I have to say my opinion changed completely. I now actually understand why live is not free!!! First off, 5 times more people online. Second(which I already heard from about 15 other people who have both)xbox live has better quality overal than PSN. Really I don't mind paying for live much anymore(as of 5 seconds ago). Now that I compare it to paying 15 bucks a month for Warhammer, its not so bad...
Sorry, Eagle. I have to disagree with you, even though you are one of the smartest people I have met(er, typed to on the interent). And I am not just kissing *** cuz your one of the admins on a forum I go on a lot :p.

And for those who don't want to pay simply because they don't want to fork over the cash when the time comes to pay for it, do this:
1:grab a medium size jar lying around that can hold a decent amount of change(you can probably see where I'm going with this)
2: Attach a sticky note to the jar, stick it in your closet or something, and leave a pen nearby.
3: Every day put a quarter in the jar(not sure what that is in other currencies, but you get the point) and mark a tally on the sticky note.
4: After about 200 days(2/3 of a year) it should be paid for(or if you wanna include tax, do this for about 20 more days).
Poof! You have the money! Simple? ...or no?

I sold my XBOX360 purely due to my disgust that even though I had paid for both their hardware and their software, I was still not deemed worthy of online play.

I purchased Starcraft 10 years ago, and I can still play that online, free.

Oh well, serves me right for not doing more research into the console before purchasing :)
Actually, starcraft is paid for in the initial cost, thats why it has stuck at a $20(AU) price point for each version for about 5 years. Blizzard reported that a while back actually.
