I guess there isn't a middle ground because when it comes to sidekicks in games then there isn't really a middle ground.

Either they are done brilliantly to suit the game (Alyx is the perfect example) where they are not too strong, weak or stupid. Or they are done badly (pretty much any game with them to be honest) and it can be frustrating as anything. The opportunity for middle ground means that they will have at least one quirk which is annoying or frustrating, and when the game then depends on the use of your sidekick then this quirk will come to the fore and suddenly you move from middle ground to a badly done sidekick.

A good example is Jericho. While a good example of many things to do wrong, the squad-sidekicks have one really fatal flaw. The game descends into one of running around in circles reviving all your team-mates. Sometimes the squad works well and people are firing and its pretty fun, but this only happens a few times and purely by chance. Once you turn to revive someone then the fire intensity is lost and everything falls apart. The constant use of suicide bomber enemies which only you seem to be able to take out serves to exacerbate this problem.

Sidekicks are almost universally annoying, as any one little trait that seems less then ideal will evolve into a massive point of frustration through the game's progression.

I always thought Yoshi was a reliable sidekick even though that little thing never went with me into the Castles or Haunted Houses.

Edit: Nevermind I guess he isn't as much of a sidekick, but more like an enhancement like the Fire Flower.

Aqualad. He could talk to fish.

Also, punctuation still loves you, why do you shun him so?

Actually some of the NPC's in S.T.A.L.K.E.R. made good side kicks, I'm thinking of the first major mission with the bandits (where you recover the USB stick) and the train yard. They didn't really get in the way, were pretty well faceless, died just as easily as you and didn't really steal your kill.

Most importantly in my mind though, is the fact that you can do those missions on your own and they'd just wait it out. Sure, not so much the train yard but they stay back and let you lead the charge before moving up.

Guess those NPC's aren't *really* side kicks because they don't stay with you the whole time. Other than those, BURN THEM ALL!

I liked the Princess in the first Prince of Persia. She could take on a monster if she had to, but if she got backed into a corner or swarmed she'd usually die. You had to look out for her, but she wasn't completely useless.
Alyx Vance was great in most aspects, but I found it strange that she didn't even flinch when I accidentally hit her with a grenade. I think they made her just a bit too tough, getting close to the point where she outperforms you. I'm not saying she couldn't (Gordon is a scientist after all, or so they keep telling me) but when an normal human in everyday clothes can take ten times the beating of someone in futuristic power armor, it begins to affect immersion.

I consider my sidekick on a sidekick to sidekick basis. They are like the stars, there are bright ones and there are those that are dim.

If a side-kick needs me to defend them then they can go F*** themselves. But a side kick that is simply there fro some company or to help you are fine with me. With Half-Life 2I think the eps have deffintly benefited from having Alyx as a side-kick. They make the game less tiresome as you have a friendly npc moving you along.

I hear that Fable 2 you will have a dog side-kick. If done right this could be a great edition to the game. But, if I have to look after it...

The wingmen in the Rouge Squadron games are pretty dependable if you bother to constantly update their orders.

I'm going to go with, if it's done correctly. The side-kicks in Mount and Blade are one of the few things that make it really good. The death-obsessed dwarf in Neverwinter nights (I still quote him from time to time). The companions in Fallout (It feels like I've passed some arbitrary barrier of experience and increased in power). The awesome and adorable demon hunter in Bloodlines ("Are you behave, demon?"). The companions in Arcanum, their personalities. And hopefully, soon, the companions in Warrior of Eternity, if I do my job right :)

One important thing is that a side-kick should never be absolutely necessary. Then it just becomes an annoying escort mission. It should be possible to fail with such, and perhaps face the consequences, but I hate it when you have to restart because someone ELSE died.

In short, when they bring something to the atmosphere or story without detracting from gameplay by being sickeningly fragile or vital to completion.

Currently...

Most side kicks are just dead weight, at least now.

Hopefully in the future this will change.

Like what was said previously more voting options would of been nice.
Metal Gear Solid: 2 Spoiler Alert...
Ok you can't say having the Legendary Soldier Solid Snake as a sidekick for most of the game could be a bad thing. I just wish I could have seen him in action half the time he went out on his own and near the end he gave out ammo like it was air for any weapon you wanted.

I guess it all depends on the AI of the sidekick. People (The Halo marines) that just follow you around and don't do anything until they a on the ground bleeding from every single oraface on their body and begging you to put them out of their misery, to which you happily accept the offer, are pointless. The people (Alyx Vance from Half-life 2) that actually do things and help you are needed.
